  1. The last time I saw The Railway Children she'd turned into her mother. After that, I believe, she became a nun in the East End.
  2. I thought it rang a bell; it's The Nine Tailors.
  3. Not always. For instance the 1932 Engine Book refers to them as the 2200 class.
  4. There's a story about Douglas Bader presenting prizes at Roedean, and enthralling the girls with his account of shooting down Fokkers. The headmistress interrupted, "Remember, girls, Fokker is a German aircraft manufacturer." "Yes," replied Bader, "But these fokkers were Messerschmitts."
  5. There's a photo and diagram in Russell 'A Pictorial Record of Great Western Coaches' part 2 p.227.
  6. I worked there every summer for six years. What a FUCCA.
  7. I've got a proper Kwak glass too. It's quite fun to spring it on the unwary.
  8. I remember looking around Cheltenham Racecourse Station in the early 70s, while the line was still in use as a diversionary route; it was a very dilapidated and forlorn place. Also very occasionally seeing a freight working crossing High Street bridge (from the bus which took me across the town to school), and once photographing a steam working through the remains of Malvern Road Station.
  9. Lanarkshire Models supply a kit which discreetly converts the van into a track cleaning unit: http://www.lanarkshiremodels.com/lanarkshire%20models%20and%20supplies%20website_107.htm
  10. Harris Great Western Coaches Part 2 has a photograph and drawings of the six-wheeled sausage van (p. 227).
  11. My informant guessed 5 on the bank from the train ; as you say, it went much faster later when he was pushing the big red lever in the cab. (Edited for clarity)
