  1. Just heard the guy from the Rail Delivery Group on the Today Programme on Radio 4 (didn't catch his name), talking about the effects of high temperatures on track and OLE. He referred to the thing I have always called a pantograph as a "transponder". Was he just wrong or is this a term with which I have been hitherto unaquainted? Thanks very much in advance.
  2. My profound and sincere apologies for reading the articles and not the small print about something I thought I already had. Whilst I was checking every other piece of text in the magazine to make sure I wouldn’t be in position to embarrass myself like that again, I noticed that the cover price has gone up to £5.20 starting from issue 271. However, the good news is that technically this means I’m 80p up on this year’s subscription.
  3. Only 6 month subscriptions? That’s going to increase my usage of cheques by 100%. I’ll now need to order a replacement cheque book in 2031, and not 2044 as I had been planning...
  4. Oh, my cup runneth over - thank you for this. It’s going to be a must-watch. in the meantime, everyone amuse themselves by listening to Public Service Broadcasting:
  5. Suspect I will just go for the “painting it black and nobody will notice” option...
  6. I was more bothered by the delivery estimate...
  7. It’s a Raytheon Sentinel. More info: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raytheon_Sentinel
  8. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, particularly after the issues over the weekend, but the page loading is getting slower. Took over two minutes to open the forum homepage just now - conditions as above.
  9. This story made this week’s Private Eye, in a roundabout sort of way:
  10. Oh good - it wasn’t just me then. Whilst I was sat in the gallery having my lunch, I really noticed how some parts of the hall were significantly less illuminated than others, and that there were quite a few luminaires with a tube out, and one or two with no tubes working at all.
  11. Pretty sure it was a 3mm cormorant, if it’s the one I’m thinking of - on Lananta Quay. And whilst I’m here, congratulations to all involved on another excellent Railex. This is the must-visit show of the year.
  12. Page loading has gone really slow again over the past couple of days - typically taking about 30 seconds to load any page. This is on IOS 12 on an iPad Air over a sky fibre max connection. Other sites (eg bbc.co.uk, which I tend to view as a benchmark) are taking 1 to 2 seconds.
  13. I’m adding the pictures from the paper here to show the magnitude of the devastation. Why? Just why?
  14. Brilliant! Thank you - and it solves the other annoying issue I had in that the forum was always slightly wider than my screen, and I was continually having to adjust it. How on earth did you find that?
  15. This is not a complaint - but for information, the ad situation is getting worse. A few days ago it was one advert, tonight there are 4 large adverts randomly positioned down the page. It’s still bearable on my iPad, but it pretty much renders the forum unusable on my phone.
  16. I’ve seen this before - some sellers put the price up to something ridiculous when an item is out of stock, so (hopefully) nobody will order. Then, when the item is back in stock, the price comes back down again. It’s done to avoid having to remove the item completely and then having to create a new listing. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not...
  17. Having flown into Trondheim airport - which is effectively next door to the village of Hell - several times this year; I can confirm that back in February the temperature was minus 15 degrees Celsius, which even the locals consider a bit fresh.
  18. IIRC, Adam of this parish, whose wagons are to be much admired, doesn’t use black at all - he paints his underframes in Humbrol chocolate (as a basis for further subsequent weathering) for exactly this reason.
  19. Not that I’m in any way a stalker or anything, but would anybody care to hazard a guess what these are:
  20. Oh yes. When I was a small Gravitas, I used to have to have my tea in my bedroom on Saturdays if the cybermen were on Doctor Who...
  21. Curiously, quarterly direct debit works out cheaper than annual: £12.49 x 4 = £49.96, as opposed to £49.99. You may scoff, but after only 183 years I’ll have saved enough for a “free” copy of BRM (with attached DVD).
  22. Subs copy just popped through the letterbox. Sir Geoff Kent is a genius.
  23. It’s a long shot, but could the op rename this thread to “MRJ 269”, otherwise it could get confusing...
  24. I have a vague memory that much, much earlier in this thread, the Stationmaster (who has some knowledge of these things) indicated that the GW crane stayed in GW livery for a very long time after nationalisation (possibly more than a decade) - so it might be worth checking depending on exactly when you want to represent the crane. Apologies in advance if my memory is faulty...
  25. Absolutely no need to apologise :-). It’s just that my inner self just couldn’t pass over such a splendid opportunity for some innuendo-based humour...
