  1. Not entirely dismissive Ron. The huge benefit of the JMRI plus smartphone solution is that anybody who arrives as a guest operator with a phone can pretty rapidly join the system. And very importantly, it's a solution that works for most DCC systems - I doubt many of my friends are going to be walking around with a £260 ESU wireless controller in their pockets, but they all have phones. John K
  2. I'll stick with JMRI's WiThrottle and my iPhone thanks. John
  3. We all have our favourites. I think most experienced user would agree that you will not get the best results from bargain basement, own brand decoders. John
  4. Free advice. Do not mix DC and DCC. However clever you think you are, it will end in a tiny puff of blue smoke, a slightly acrid small; and tears. John
  5. Check that the transformer supplying the command station is delivering at the correct voltage. John K
  6. JMRI works well with Linux Mint. John
  7. I have a 7mm scale LMS Garratt and I have gone the other way with a single decoder driving both motors wired in parallel. The decoder has a peak output of 1.8A. It's worked well for 10 years. John K
  8. Don't forget to complain to Heljan . If nobody complains about poorly running models, Heljan will carry on selling poor quality, high priced items to the UK market. John K
  9. The DCC decoder manuals are all here: https://www.dccconcepts.com/category/product-related-advice-and-information/dcc-loco-decoders/?cat_name=dcc-loco-decoders&term= John
  10. Make sure you are in 28/128 speed step mode. John K
  11. I have experience with a number of systems. I'm happy with Lenz, Digitrax, NCE and Uhlenbrock. As for ZTC, if you can't say anything nice, say nothing. John K
  12. The Virtual Com Port drivers you need are contained in this zip file. http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM%20v2.12.26%20WHQL%20Certified.zip The cable you have is fine. John K
  13. There is a pdf Show Guide available here http://www.gauge0guild.com/doncaster_2017.pdf John K
  14. Dubmill is also featured in the May Gazette. The Halifax venue hasn't been used for some years now and the subsequent venue, the school at Cleckheaton, has been the subject of major remodelling. So the Doncaster Dome is likely to be the Summer Show venue for a while - so long as it remain affordable it's a nice location. Best, John K
  15. Come to the Show and join the Guild while you are there. The £5 that you paid in excess of the members fee will be refunded. John

  17. Come to the Guild's second major show of the year at Doncaster Dome. 10am - 4pm I will post some layout and trader details next week John

  19. Hi Sandy, I've seen wear something like this with a driven gear eccentrically mounted on the axle (bore too large and grub screw too tight). If it was eccentric, how have you attempted to ensure concentricity of the new one? Did you file a flat on the axle to accept the grub screw? John K

  22. I agree that it may not look the most excreting throttle in the world, but I will bet heavy money that it will work. John
  23. I use good old bulletproof Lenz on two O gauge exhibition layouts (and on my home layout) I also link the Lenz system to JMRI running on a laptop so those who want to can use phones and tablets as controllers. I use Lenz because it has never failed in 16 years John K
