  1. How much different is the price from the Hornby Observation coach? They're about comparable, and I guess the manufacturer is factoring in the fact that they are likely in most cases to sell only one per modeller.
  2. I'm toying with using the top half of the GBL Truro with the bottom half of an Airfix Truro. I also have a spare front bogie from a Bachmann City of London. That way I get a better paint job than I could hope to line out for a static model.
  3. Finally tracked one City of Truro down to WH Smiths in Bolton. Whilst the local Asdas appear to have stopped stocking, the lady at the tills at Smiths said that they're selling all twenty of each locomotive that they get in, and have no plans to stop stocking it until that changes.
  4. A satisfactory 5 minutes' work with a file and a track twist that was derailing 3 out of 4 of my locos on the garden section is no more.

  5. No sign of Truro in my local Asda. They have had all previous issues. The space on the shelf was taken up with some cake related magazine. Bah! If there is still demand I don't see why the publisher would reduce the numbers supplied.
  6. Just noticed that both trains on my garden layout have returned into the shed soaking wet - I hadn't noticed the torrential downpour outside!

Hang 'em up on your clothes horse, they'll soon dry out!

  7. Reposted from the 'Trinity Road' thread, because it features the NCB sentinal running on my garden layout. Considering all the bird doings, it didn't stutter once!
  8. I have finally succumbed and picked up the NCB version today from Arcadia in Shaw (he also had examples of the red one there too). The running qualities are fantastic, given its really short 0-4-0 chassis. It has managed insulfrog and electrofrog points and crossings with ease, and is now running around the garden hauling a few wagons. Even at a slow speed it is coping well and has not stalled once. It strikes me that, despite all the whining about prices going up and up, this little locomotive offers extremely good value for money in the present climate. I cannot fault it. It is also interesting to note, as an aside, that the decent Hornby wagons that have become available recently are all less expensive than their Bachmann equivelents Tim had the shunters trucks at £9 whereas the Bachmann versions were over £11. Also the Hornby BR brake vans were similarly less than their Bachmann counterparts, and at £12 I was tempted by the CCT if it had been available in a more recent livery. If Hornby can just sort their supply issues, then they can give Bachmann a run for their money. I look forward in hope that an MSC version appears.
  9. The perils of a garden railway - the birds have managed a direct hit with their personal deposit on a Maunsell brake.

  10. I thought a tramway can be grade listed, as there's one down in Somerset somewhere in a mill complex* that hasn't seen trains since the 60s, but is protected. This seemed to be the case when I was there and a river bridge was being replaced including the tram tracks embedded in the road surface. *Racking my brains but can't remember its name.
  11. Would it be possible to apply for grade listing of the tramway? Even if no trains use it, it might give the rails being left in situ some kind of protection? When I lived in Bonn briefly, there were thousands of cyclists, and none of them seemed to have any great issue with the (still in use) tram system. We just learnt to be careful! I was told on day one "Remember - there's only so far you can cycle in a straight line before you fall over" as a warning not to let the bicycle wheels slot into the grooves on the move.
  12. Just tested my British Seagull outboard in a wheelie bin full of water. Still runs after four years in storage. All ready for a season on the water!

  13. Received my replacement Duchess today. Runs fine; on closer inspection it is definitely not the one I sent back, and shows signs of having had the wheel back to backs changed. No sign of the postage they were supposed to refund though. I have sent an email asking if this will be processed back onto the original payment card.
  14. Car MOT Tuesday. Nothing id worse than waiting for your car to go through its test. Even the Dentist is preferential. What expensive news will this year bring?

  17. Just finished erecting a flagpole in the garden. A Union flag has been raised, but I need to source one more durable than a souvineer from a museum.

My wife might be able to do you a good deal, she works for a flagmakers - www.bannerbox.co.uk - just ask for Laura! :D

  18. Got my 28xx at ASDA in Bolton, which had loads. No sign of the Schools. The wheels and motion will get a repaint - far too silver - and I had to adjust and reglue the chimney cap as it didn't sit right. But otherwise a nice model. Interestingly, it doesn't short out the track when placed on it, so could be used as a plinthed loco on display, like the one that was at Moor Street.
  19. Garden railways are fun. 50 wagon train going one way and 13 coach train going the other snaking through the conifers. I have a tia-maria and cointreau. Lovely.

Brilliant news; we`ll need progress updates and pictures! :-)

  24. Just found these at Asda in Skelmersdale. Build quality isn't perfect, as there is some flash on the wheels and lots of fingerprints. Some-one has been very happy with the glue for the handrails and the Coronation has a big splodge of it on the side that wasn't visible in the packaging. The wheels are fixed, and the valve gear appears to be one piece plastic moulds so no means to make it roll. However for the money these are well worth having, and the magazine that comes with them is very well written. They had lots of both models, but chose wisely as there was noticeable scuffs in the paint on some of the examples. Certainly a much better series than the build your own model railway for an exorbitant price! The Mallard will replace my Hornby model in my display cabinet, allowing the real model a chance to run on my layout without having to dig in the cabinet for it.
