  1. The rear loco is in trail mode where the fire suppression systems work and sometimes the ETA but the loco does not provide power. 3805hp is enough for three coaches and a dead loco

  4. It sounds like a great project Nidge , unusual too as when most people do the retro thing it's the 60s rather than 70s they go for.
  5. The 180s and the 175s always seem like a very cheaply built mk3 with lots of creaks and rattles from inferior plastic trim
  6. Are these narrowish as if MGMetro seats are fitted they tend to look a bit crowded The quality of those looks excellent
  7. That looks absolutely awful. A first class seat with no window! What the hell is going on ,I know the railway is on the whole run by idiots these day but this is taking it to a whole new level. If these types of people were in charge in the 70s HST would not have happened but a fleet of faster 313s with a few less doors and slightly higher seats would have been the network standard

  9. That is a fantastic restoration job John. I'm trying to picture what the buffet seating looked like, I believe there was a chrome pole of some sort in the buffet area. I think there was a huge fridge in the kitchen but can't recall if it worked. Incidentally with the white circle multiple working equipment how do you isolate a final drive if the engine can't be started as there are no main reservoir pipes?

About three years ago I was speaking to a senior network rail electrification engineer he told me that for all the electrification planned they had been told they had to build a new power station. Obviously this has not happened so it maybe that projects have stalled due to lack of capacity in the grid
  11. I had the centre compartment of this vehicle as my regular volunteer accommodation at Goathland in the early 80s. It wasn't in bad condition back then and more or less complete. All the kitchen equipment was present and working. Have the interior fittings survived or was it contaminated with the blue stuff?

  15. Great picture of churston, far more heritage than anything the company that operates this service today has ever done. I presume the 103 didn't have onboard commentary? and no piped music on the platform
  16. It's not bad at high Marnham, the main place is Tuxford and there is a model shop right outside the gate. Where is Hugh based now? He was on EWS then on GB when I was there. He is a decent bloke. I knew I knew the bloke in the picture
  17. Sorry Jim I thought it was the high Marnham track. I did wonder when you said north! That picture looks very much like near tuxford. On another matter the guy in the picture of 099 is Hugh Phillips is it not?
  18. Is there much going on up there now? About four years ago I was up there a lot but haven't been much lately
  19. The mk3s have all been refurbished and are absolutely fine not as good as the original seating layout but better than a unit. The blue and grey mk2s are riviera and the DRS ones , well DRS. Those are even nicer with new carpets and reupholstered seats The 37 set is here until the new trains arrive and the 68 one until the end of March at present
  20. But it won't be Paul, the mk3s are some of the most comfortable vehicles ever built. Ironically when I've been on the mk2 68 short set many passengers comment that it is the most comfortable train they have ever used!
  21. One of the most important differences is any profit goes to a Japanese company. You cannot class the 800 as being built in Britain it is simply assembled here. If it was built here it would take a bigger workforce in a more specialised factory
  22. Quite ironic that the plaxtons coach looks to have most legroom The 800 interior looks more suited to a 156 than a long distance Inter-city train Absolutely awful
  23. People should be reminded of some of the pretty awful 1970s Japanese cars to show the other side of Japanese quality! I can find absolutely nothing I like about these new trains, I appreciate they will probably be reliable but have about as much character as a hi rise lift!
