Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

More Double Fairlie progress...

It's taking shape, the cylinders have been fitted to their backplates and the lower body valances are progressing. My fingers keep getting a little bit hot, but it hasn't caused me to throw anything across the room in agony yet! There's something very pleasing about the smell of hot metal when creating a locomotive, it's almost like it's a real one! It's not long now until the wheels go on and that's when the real test of my chassis starts. The axles turn in their bearings now, but once the whee

Fourtrack G5 in Scaleseven (almost up to date)

By last October I had built up the front splashers, apart from the riveted flange that sits on the footplate. I temporarily attached a bit of rail across the footplate to stop it bending down in the middle - I have a suitably shaped bit of chipboard to bolt under the footplate to stop this happening but mislaid it!     After a brief diversion rewheeling a Tower Jinty to ScaleSeven over the holiday period I got back to the G5 in January. I couldn't put off attaching the cab and tanks any lon

BRWC type2...

From a thirty quid pile of bits a pheonix arises...the real thing looks less streaky, I reckon a little weathering powder work could finish the body work, along with some brass strip lamp irons and etched windscreen wipers...       the chassis is next when I get my hands on the drawings I am waiting for, new chassis cross members for the bogie fronts and new cab steps are on the list. The springs have been moved back and some pipework has been added from fusewire...

Blog update, 73101 progress, Tractor for a friend and pacer progress

Hi all,   Whilst commenting away on the various threads on the new and improved RMweb( well done to Andy and the team) ive been working on my own models.   Firstly a pleasant arrival last weekend of Hornbys' New DVT model of 82150 in Virgin Livery, The model being nice with some work to bring it up to scratch, mainly the Stripes on the end of the vehicle need replacing as they are too thick in appearance, so i've replace the printed ones with Fox Transfers' version with IMHO look better ( pi

Judith Edge Steelman Royale buffers and odds.

The buffers, Gibson industrial pattern, need a bit of modifying. The base is square when it should be rectangular, easily rectified with a few file strokes. Just keep checking all is square, its too easy to take too much off one side. Here's a piccy, un-modified buffer on the left; They will be attached after the buffer beam is fully painted, along with the lifting brackets, to make applying the wasp stripes easier. On the subject of the buffer beam I drilled the buffer holes after the beams

Delph - electrics begin

Have started to do some of the electics under the board I currently have at home. Frighteningly slow progress and vast quantities of wire being consumed - and this is one of the more simple boards, with only one point and one AJ uncoupler (not yet started). I dread to think what the station throat board will be like!         Photos show progress to date. The tag strips will eventually carry the connections to the adjoining boards.   Dave.

More busses

Apologies for the seeming mania about N gauge busses on my blog but it's just that I reckon I'm going to need a lot for my London Bridge project in the same way that I've already put together a lot of phone boxes and skips. This time it's the Cars Workshop KMB Plaxton Pointer 2 of which I managed to purchase two. I've cut back one to a 'short' single door version and today I've started adding some paint/decal detail.   Unfortunately this is hampered by the lack of suitable N gauge/2mm l

Another visitor to Somercombe.

Passing through with Somerset coal for Exeter. Golden Arrow kit on a Hornby 8F chassis and a Comet tender.   Also passing through, on a Plymouth - Portsmouth service, was the S15.   And a view from the roof of Wilkins Bro's brewery. Now with the shiny bits well toned down, weathering just about finished, but still needing a crew, pick-ups and decoder. These can be done later, but at the moment there is a little tight spot whille running on test. It is gradually easing, but I won't f

N-gauge locos for Wold's End

Ok, so no photos of N-Gauge Wold's-End but thought these are far better!!   As I wanted to try and make the OO and N layouts as close as possible, I have used the same rolling stock and locos on both. The only locos I'm missing in N-gauge are the Class 24 D5038 and a Class 121 bubble car in BR blue/Grey.......come on Dapol.   So while items went for respray thought I'd have them weathered as well:-               Got to say Ian at Mercig Studios does a bloody fantastic job!

"Forward!"

Here's an update I had plum forgot to mention (but its on my external blog, along with another project, currently in the works queue). This is an ex-Great Central Railway (hence the title) J11 (colloquially known as a "Pom Pom"), and it is to have the "J17" treatment to it. In other words - I'm going to buy the DCC fitted standard Hornby 0-6-0 chassis (which I'm thrilled to say, fits) and then paint into BR early crest livery.     So far the main job has been removing years upon years worth

Roof Trusses arrive

THE ROOF   Having decided what it was to look like the problem was how to achieve it, so some rather extensive plasticard construction was needed.   Step 1 was to cut and stick a series of identical "roof trusses" to the top of the existing wall, basically triangles with a 12mm tab hanging down at the back, this tab is stuck to the inside face of the wall so the truss sits in the right position front to back. The trusses were then supported by a vertical plasticard strip running along the ri

WMHQ February meeting.

Been a while since anything has been mentioned about West Mersea, so I thought I would pop a couple of videos up from the last meeting.   Hopefully I'll get a chance to do some better videos with some better lighting one day, rather than just a couple of minutes before I leave for home. I need to persuade a few of the other members to bring their stock along more regularly too so that we can show more than just a vain old K2 trundling up and down   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fl17pAMPi

Judith Edge Steelman Royale body detailing.

Resin mouldings are used for the air filter, radiater filler and fuel filler. These were attached with superglue. I've also soldered lengths of .5mm brass rod onto the roof for the airhorns to be attached to, the airhorns having holes drilled in them for the purpose. Airhorn positions vary between individual locos so beware... The exhaust can be seen in the photo at the front waiting to be attached into the exhaust casing. This was knocked up from 1mm thinwall brass tube and a piece of scrap fre

Another Wold's end in the making?

Well the N-gauge Wolds end is coming along quite nicely and when I actually get some time at home instead of working away will get some photos!!   Thinking towards the future, looking at building another Wold's end, this time to complete the set it would be in O-gauge.   Now looking about have found that I can get most of the modern diesels that I require, but prices are somewhat scarey, along with building and painting them! As I have already bought the Scalescenes buidlings I should be ab

Out of Era and way off Region but who cares!

Hi All   Whilst getting ready for Rainhill this coming weekend I got my hands on a couple of fellow members locos to Mucky up a bit!!   So first up and although slightly out of era and obviously working down from Scotland to collect Thorne Yards Ploughs is Andys 26037         Secondly and in The Yard for no other reason than it sounds fantastic!! Deltic Prototypes - Dapol Body Almost Done

Craftsman whiskers and side stripes are starting to be applied along with some of the Fox plates     Note also the tasteful application of A1 models horns (thanks Brian at Shawplan) fitted using split pins around the rear portion of the horn and pushed though 1mm holes in the roof. Silver paint will be toned down once the matte varnish is applied   Also found the Craftsman wipers that should have been fitted to the Lima DP1, must get them painted and glued in place sometime ......

Footplate crew

I've been on the lookout for 4mm pre-grouping drivers and firemen recently, but so far with limited success. Meanwhile, here's a couple of modified ones from IKB. For me, tiny projects like these are as much fun as the more substantial work.       The IKB fireman seen above is unusual in that, unlike 90% of 4mm firemen, he is not furiously shovelling! Unfortunately the mould lacks a bit of bulk, so I extended his girth using plastic putty. The nose was re-sculpted and th

Brackhampton Snow Hill

As one does when you don't have a railway I've been thinking about what to build next, I want to utilise as much of the saved buildings from the old railway as possible, so this would mean it has to be quite a size, (so hopuse hunting has been a bit difficult what with prices in Redditch being somewhat higher than my backwater in Leeds. So as well as a house that has room for large Victorian furniture, I also need a large garage, or play room or a garden big enough to allow me to build one and s

The return of articulated stock

Whilst I collect the bits and pieces necessary to have a go at bashing together a Saint class loco, I thought I'd pull out the articulated stock. These are ca couple of photos of the job so far - as u can see not much progress made. This is one half of the set - brake, third and compo, the rest is a mirror image, its been rested on the bogies for the moment. I really need to decide how close to put them and this will depend on the eventual radius of the layout when built. Still a lot of work to
