Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

The return of articulated stock

Whilst I collect the bits and pieces necessary to have a go at bashing together a Saint class loco, I thought I'd pull out the articulated stock. These are ca couple of photos of the job so far - as u can see not much progress made. This is one half of the set - brake, third and compo, the rest is a mirror image, its been rested on the bogies for the moment. I really need to decide how close to put them and this will depend on the eventual radius of the layout when built. Still a lot of work to

Railroad Black Five

I bought this wonderful model for a small sum at the Loughborough Model Centre recently. It's the latest Hornby Railroad Black Five, in an LMS livery. The model itself is forty pounds cheaper than the super detailed model, but I don't think the detail is that much worse, in all honesty.   I intend to modify this model into 45249 - one of the Black Fives seen in and around the Leeds area in the 60s. There's a photo on Flikr - found here. A fabulous photograph, and I hope to make the black five

More illuminating stuff

Me again   I thought to myself this weekend instead of doing more electrics I would carry on with a bit of 'fun' modelling and figure out how to improve the little morris minor as mentioned way back in the old forums. I thought to myself it will be a quickie and I would finish it in a day but here I am now, Sunday evening and now thinking thats enough....       I wanted at least one car on the layout with lights as it would fit in with my plan of being able to run the layout in the

Diorama progress

Progress on this has been slow but I've had a stab at ballasting the Easitrack. It still needs finishing off, especially at the shoulders but I really need to establish the embankments first, and painting to weather it down a bit. However, I'm pleased how it's already starting to look. It should prove a suitable scenic background for photographing stock on.       G.

Hornby 2721 class detailing

Here's one of several projects that I'm trying to get finished and off my workbench. I haven't posted anything in ages so I thought an interim report would be better than waiting for one of these albatrosses to reach completion.   The 2721 is an old-stager in the Hornby range and by no means up to the standard of recent RTR but it's a characterful model that offers a bit of Edwardian charm with its delightful open cab. The main problem, aside from the usual issue of ride height and (I think)

33103

I've always admired the Heljan 33 and have been longing for a model for some time, the article displayed here is 33103 in the popular Fragonset livery.   I plan on carrying out the bogie spring modification, fitting etched nameplates and modeling the fibre glass roof panel.

Fourtrack G5 in Scaleseven (continued from forum)

On the old RMweb I was plugging away at a Fourtrack G5. The story continues here, but before I bring it up to date here is a recap of the old material:   Posted 23/11/08: I've been plodding along with this Fourtrack G5 for some time now. Some of the bodywork is done, mainly the tanks and the sandwich buffer-beams, and it's now time to make a start on the chassis. I've filed the cusp off each frame separate;y and now I'm about to bolt the two frames together, using the holes for the plunger pi

On its travels again

Well it has been a while since I updated this blog hasn't it? Sorry about that. Since Warley Fisherton Sarum has not had anything done to it. I have however been working on a few more items of stock and locomotives.   This week will see the layout prepared for its showing at the Chesham show this coming Saturday (6th March) The show is being held at the Elgiva Theatre, St Mary's Way, Chesham, HP5 1LL and is open to the public between 10am and 5pm. If you are thinking of dropping by come and

EFE butchery continues

Whilst I've been predominantly working on my 2mm Grimsby and Immingham stuff recently, I have had a bit of a break from the small stuff to continue building/finishing some more cars for Grime Street     Another pivotal nearly ready, this is the one shown earlier, top deck now built and painted, this one a re-trucked version.Quite pleased with this one, going to have an experiment with home made advertising decals for this one. I want to ty and get some more typical 'Leeds' adverts rather t

Critter - update [some weathering pics added]

Hello,   Been working hard on my Critter the last few days and I'm pleased to say that assembly is now complete!   A lot of trial and error was involved in getting the chassis to fit and it is currently a push fit and until I think of something better, it'll stay like this!   The model should have sprung buffers but I lost my patience with the tiny springs so they are now glued into place!   The only addition to the model since these photos were taken is lamp brakets and a chimney.   T

Ring Road Video Update

The start of the upgrade for next year's exhibitions has started - this will include a new wooden facia, a lighting pelmet, and a re-worked storage yard that will allow me to increase from 8 to 15 trains, without the need for any baseboard extensions. I will also be adding a few tiny details - more shopping trolleys etc.   First up however, was to finally get the tram running on both boards! This now works well, although I am running in at high speed as it helps force a path between the card r

Kyle - Strange hybrid...now with images...

Update - Well with the recent probs with the server, one would think a perfect opportunity to catch up with some modelling, right?...wrong Unfortunately, this was timed with a work deadline which has taken all available day and night hours from my modelling. However, by way of an update.....   You may recall that I decided to redo my EASITRAC turnouts as I was having trouble with the common crossing. I decided to remove the premade turnout base and rebuild the turnout using EASITRAC sleeper

2mm realistic ground signals, are they possible?

Hello   Im back! I have been a bit stupid! I was kinda holding off posting anything until the blogs were 'fixed' but didnt realise that I could just upload the pictures to my picture thing then link them here!   Anyway. 2mm realistic ground signals, are they possible....?   I think they are. Below are a couple of pictures of the first one out of four for Highclere. Its been made in a much similar way to the other signal I have made earlier on. It will be operated by a servo as with the ot

station building

Last night I started work on the station building and I got to spend all afternoon in the shed today   As a result the station has progressed nicely. The factory at the end of the line has had the door runners fitted, so the big doors can be up or down. It has also had a colour wash and weather. The concrete has had some colour patches to make it look like it has been repaired. The concrete apron has been extended to the front of the baseboard.   The doors   Open Closed How

The Concept

The Concept?   So now you've read the inspiration and learnt a little history. Logically I should share the concept before I get into the murky depths of random modelling blog posts!   I have an Ikea book shelf in my study. For a long time I've pondered about building a little diarama to sit on it - originally thinking OO and using it as a photo plank. I'm not quite sure what kicked off the interest in the MSC really, but this little foray in to P4 seemed to fit on the shelf top without havi

Hythe Parkway - Post Ris-ex and the future...

Hi Guys,   It's a bit late, but here's my report on Hythe at Ris-ex 2010!   As at Newbury, the layout performed very very well, Although this was only from about 11 o'clock onwards! It was at about this time when the point into Platform 2 (the longest and main platform), which we have always had to 'wiggle' to get it working if's been left a while, finally packed up all together and locked solid. So one pleed to Hythe's chief mechanical engineerer (aka dad!), and he was under the layout tryi

New motive power at Somercombe

Some new motive power has been seen in Somercombe.     S15 from a DJH kit. Still have to take the brightness off the motion and DCC it. It also needs a crew and the weathering needs finishing.   My new Bachmann 3MT tank ready to work the stopper to Salisbury. The emblem has been changed and I have given it a light weathering.   My "Teddy bear". In the yard after working a pick-up down from Westbury via Yeovil Junction.   Finally for now, my Beyer-Peacock diesel electric pro

Fairlie bogie progress and a tar wagon!

There has been a bit of progress on the Double Fairlie this week, hopefully soon(ish) there'll be wheels on it and I'll have a rolling chassis!   The cylinders ready to be soldered up and motion brackets waiting to be attached to the frames   One of the power bogies with the motion brackets in place and axles slotted through the bearings to make sure it all still turns (it does, phew!)   The N Brass Locomotives GVT Tar wagon I bought at Doncaster, all ready for the paintshop. LNER CCT and another short movie

Baseboard Construction

Well I have made a start on some baseboard construction trials. As the scenic board will require an underbridge, I need to be able to create some vertical depth to the scenery. I could achieve this either by having a raised track bed or by splitting the baseboard level.       My initial thoughts are towards using the open framed baseboard with a raised track bed method. I feel this allows for a more natural landscape to be created which the track runs through rather than on.   I have

GNER's Badger - Part 1

Well, here's is a sneak peak at another of my current projects. In an effort to maximise the crossover of stock between my two layouts, I decided that once EWS lost the mail by rail contract, Scotswood Bridge depot would have passed to the hands of GNER for small-scale maintenance jobs. This provided a wonderful excuse to try and build a loco I've always had a soft spot for: 89001. I'm working from the 1998 article in Railway Modeller which is based on heavy kitbashing of Hornby HST bodies and a
