Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

A brief update..

As the pictures are now back here's T9 30717 in all her grubby glory     I'll post a few pictures of Appledore 2.0 a bit later today along with an updated pic of the PMV I've built.   I've also got another renaming project on the bench, yes it's another rebuilt West Country - 34093 Saunton..

No.1's Tender Moments

While Andy's been fixing the image display problem (thank you Andy! :icon_thumbsup2: ), I've had the flu and have had little energy to do any modelling. However the last few days I have felt a little better, so cracked on with modifying the tender for my Stirling Single No.1 bash.   First up, I have two plans - and am going to do both and fit whichever one fits the "look" better. First up then, is removing the coal rails from the Bachmann Emily tender.   This is how the tender looked a mont

I have seen the light ....

I bought a load of long leaded 6v bulbs at the Derby Show this year and last night I started to add a few to the layout. I made some 3mm holes in the back panels of the "Bus Garage" and poked the bulbs through. Then followed a good hour playing around with combinations of series/parallel wiring to get the level of illumination right. I ended up with using 5 in series which with the 18-19v laptop PSU voltage available gives a nice warm glow to the building. Not permanently wired up yet, will ha

The Weymouth Aftermarth

Hello Everyone, well, Gary and I are safely back from Weymouth (and the layout too!), It has been a fantastic weekend, the Weymouth show by comparison is not the biggest of shows, but it serves its purpose well. The people are wonderful and the layout ran without error. It;s been a really great weekend - even the wee lasses celebrating a birthday in Weatherspoons were nice too!   I parted with a little bit of money, a GWR green railbus "thing" took my fancy, along with a couple of N Gauge

Post exhibition pack away

Back from Cheltenham. Great little show and a number of RMWebbers evident. I've really enjoyed playing with Weston this weekend and on the whole, the layout behaved itself. Just one non functioning electromagnet to sort out before we're out and about at Expo EM South in a month's time. I didn't take any pictures of the show but some folks did. Have a look on the Cheltenham show exhibition page for updates.   Retail therapy was limited to a Chivers MDV 20T mineral and a nearly new Ratio Van B.

Been at the in laws this weekend and got the farther in law to letter half a dozen locos, unfortunatly I told him to put the wrong size LNER transfers on the loco.     The body needs a bit of a clean up, (black paint would not set), if it cleans up OK then I will leave alone or I might try and life the transfers and put smaller ones on. If not it might be a repaint job. All the other locos were fine I just made a mistake on this one.

8. Another Extension For A Service Area

The OO Garden Shed By John Geeee   I was becoming dissatisfied with the facilities available to the terminus. I wanted a nearby turntable to turn locomotives but I did not have the room. So another extension was required, "but thats the last one!" said Mrs Geeee. I therefore got the wood out again and increased the area so that I could add a turntable with some storage sidings and a loco service area. This extension would offer more room to develop the goods yard, add a coal merchant siding,

The start of the last lap

New Heys final completion entered its final phase today with the construction to painting stage of the l 3 remaining signals, the up advance home, up home, and the down home.   All 3 oddball signals no fancy gantry stuff for the signal enthusiasts Im afraid, but they are models of what actually was there - a 45 foot lattice post for the down advance starter, The up advance starter was a tall wooden post, and the up home a stubby little number designed for sighting under Two Bridges Road overbr

7. The High Street Experience.

The OO Garden Shed   By John Geeee   I wanted to do something to add to the scene around the terminus station. I got the wood out again and added about another 8 inches to the left hand side baseboards so that I could add a row of high street shops and at the top end some kind of factory.       To cover the baseboard joins I put down some black card and stuck it with some spray adhesive. It seemed a good idea at the time but about 12 months later the card has slowly bubbled up and be

4mm/00 Falcon Brass ROD, The Boiler & Smokebox

Well onto the boiler and smokebox, the boiler even comes pre rolled! ah the luxury from Falcon Brass. In all seriousness it is rolled nicely and is a very crisp and clean etch.   I started by soldering the seam of the boiler tube then added an etched disc in the centre to hold its shape, after that I rolled up tightly two pieces of Lead (Courtesy of the roofers:rolleyes:) weighing 150 grams each which were then placed either side of the centre disc, when happy I soldered a further disc at eac

Backdated Monty's figures

Off with their heads! Farthing is set in Edwardian times, but good figures from this period are not easy to come by. I've therefore been doing a bit of backdating to the excellent Monty's range of 1930s-50s figures from Dart Castings. The photo above shows a rather gruesome selection of body parts left behind from butchering and modifying the Monty's figures.       This lunar landscape shows my preference for blu-tacking the figures to inverted cups, so I don't have to h

Getting ready for Leeds this weekend!

Hi As we are at Leeds this weekend (and off to the Lakes for a couple of days from tomorrow - Great timing!!) Thought it was about time to get Thorne Yard out of storage and rectify the little list of jobs to do after its last exhibition at Thirsk!! Also I've been working on a couple of new bits for the show - Namely a Backscene (so we can hide!) And a factory back to hide the backscene!! Well the work is 90% done so I've grabbed a couple of snaps! (sorry about the poor quality but the big ca

Blogs and dogs, whatever next?

Never one to run from a challenge I thought it was about time I did some of this blogging lark. Like many I had nothing to do while RMWeb was in transit so I had to resort to modelling! Amongst the many projects in flight at present I have been spending odd moments finishing up the greyhound stadium for my local club's OO layout. Due to the size of it the structure has been bedded on to a sub-baseboard so it can be easily removed from the layout so we can get at other things. Fences have been ad

St. Simons Workbench - Shingle Train

Hi,   Work on the Shingle Train is progressing, but very slowly, the secound wagon has been constructed and is waiting to be painted along with the other wagon   For those who don't know what the shingle train is, here's a brief explaination:   One of the most important freight flows for the New Romney Branch in Kent was Shingle from the vast shingle banks of Dungeness & Lydd. These were conveyed in a fleet of modified LNER designed, Steel bodied, 13t Open Wagons (otherwise known as Hi

Unloading the delivery.

Knocked up a Dapol mineral wagon kit as a static for the coal merchant. Part loaded with a figure inside shovelling the load out.Thomas Muir's son perhaps. Also looks like they have invested some money to help load coal sacks a bit easier.   I don't know the origin of these bits as they came in a box of stuff a friend was clearing out many years ago.

2500 Gallon Tender

I finally finished making and fitting the lamp sockets to the 2500 gallon tender, so it is now ready for painting. The engine and tender have been scrubbed with 'Bar Keepers Friend' and warm water, and are now drying after rinsing in cellulose thinners. In the meantime, I'm trying to warm the garage sufficiently to get a coat of primer on before it gets dark and the temperature drops. This was the state of the tender and its chassis a little earlier this afternoon.         Nick

Beginings

Hi I had previously started this elsewhere on the web but I'd been convinced to sign up to RMweb, which promptly stopped working and moved here! Anyway, hopefully being fresh to it all will stand me in good stead, so, on with the bloggy-ma-doodah thingummy bit.   The Chocolate Box is a joint project between myself and my friend (who is a member here, and who will hopefully scribble a few lines at some point :-D). Now I must point out , I'm pretty new to modelling, my friend is someth

Historical posts from the old RM

Avonwick, South Devon in 2mm by Kris on Fri Apr 18, 2008 6:13 pm   A new layout! Why? Having recently moved and found myself with some space that could be used for a layout but not being large enough for my 2007 challenge layout I started looking for inspiration then .... .... in December the 2mm association announced that they would be running a challenge competition for their Golden Jubilee which occurs in 2010. The challenge is to build an operational model railway to 2mm association sta

    • Noting that you "have been building stock appropriate for the Forest of Dean in the early '20s.", I am interest to see that the use of larger wagons persisted in the area from much earlier Broad Gauge (BG) Days.    In my own blog,  I have written about BG wagons built for carrying both coal and pig iron down through the Haie Tunnel to the dock at Bullo Pill.  Ian Pope et al quote an incident from 1863, when a train of 70 wagons broke free and led to a ‘pile up’, said to be 15 wagons hi
    • Thanks Andy, some good pointers as always.  I think the picture in my blog post of the abbreviated mainline DB train illustrates your point about train length very well.  Fortunately I also have a couple of railcars:   Epoche I:       and Epoche III / IV:     As for goods or freight trains, this is only 20" long in OO and could be used to generate ideas too:       I do need to give some further thought
    • Thanks Mark, re-reading my old stuff reminds me that you suggested I try building a photo plank back then - looks like it could still happen, Keith:
    • Hi Keith.  First and foremost I hope all goes well with you and your's. Must be a busy time preparing for the move and it's good you're finding a bit of time to imagine what model-railway opportunities may present themselves in your new home.   I like very much the slice of Ontario video. The builder had obviously thought about camera angles and settled on 3 or 4 places to capture the action.   FWIW I think the space you might have would lend itself well to a section of
    • Keith, everyone of us is an artist, for an artist takes something and makes something that means something. I sincerely  hope the books help, the first is more practical the second hopefully more thought provoking. The third, in hand, something else again.   Best of luck, and enjoy the journey.
