Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

And back to the new layout...

I've worked up a quick concept sketch for the proposed new layout (see entry below) to get a feel of the similarities/differences to Ring Road. Very heavily influenced by Coventry, my aim with this layout would be to keep the overall style and architectural/urban elements of Ring Road, but arrange them in a different way, with the layout in a slight cutting, roads going over the top, and the station adding operational interest. Still a year or so off even starting this dedicated exhibition l

The workshop

I have only used Wordpress for blogging before so i am feeling my way around this. at the moment images are linked to a picasa but this may also be changed once I get a feel for things anyway, without further ado, a few shots of the work area just to show that i actually do make something, first up is the workbench nothing special. in the photo you can see the RSU and a ERSA soldering station. the draws on the right have all the hand tools Next up and to the left of the bench is the library,

A (re)introduction

Evening all!   Having acquired the link for the new forum and discovered that I'm one of the infamous 15%, I decided that I'd make a fresh start rather than copy across all of my old workbench! If anyone actually cares, the originals are linked in my signature.   My current project is a Backwoods Blanche, in 009, being made as a 2-4-0 STT with tender cab and piston valve cylinders - as she is now, in fact. My previous attempt at a Backwoods kit went a bit awry when Taliesin's power bogie di

The scale of the problem

A blog by Phil Harding aged 60 1/6.   As the title of this blog suggests I have over the years started lots of different projects and finished none. I hope by committing to a blog to change that - even if nobody bothers to look at it I hope that by giving myself the task of making regular posts I can actually achieve something to post with. The first entries over the next few days will simply be pictures of the various projects I have on the go. Subsequent posts would hopefully involve me actu

Prototype Revealed

OK - Perhaps it is time to expose the prototype   The prototype is the North British MAN 225hp 0-4-0DH Specifically the third batch D2745-D2780 that were introduced from January 1960.   Yes. It is another kit from the Judith Edge range. Michael Edge has previously started a thread on RMWeb discussing the early development of the kit. This has now been released as two kits one for the second batch (D2720-D2744, June 58 - April 1959) and one for the third batch (D2745-D2780, January 1960 -

Bogies for the 85

I've been making some progress with my scratchbuilt 85 at last (see http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=16268&start=0 for the first installment). I've now got a running chassis based on the guts of a Bachmann warship. The loco made its exhibition debut under test at Showcase with a fast run round Tonbridge West Yard before I'd fitted the decoder. It did get some odd looks from the public, this strange grey thing with no bogie sides and no pan, buffers etc. I'd been planni

A finer plan

Have done some more playing with the track plan. First I tried with medium radius points, but that needed almost 8 feet to get the platforms, station throat and fiddle yard in. I don't want to lose any of this - though I guess I could cope with a single track access to the fiddle yard, but it reduces the operational scope (the fiddle yard needs moving after every move, whereas I'd prefer to be able to do an out and in (at least) before fiddling. I remeasured the space available, and, though i

I Feel Fine (Scale)

After an unpleasant experience with a point motor (don't ask, I don't want to talk about it * :icon_mutter:) I thought I'd try some of this boundary pushing lark.   Following Graeme's revalation that current production N stock will run on 2mm Association Easitrac I felt that it had to be worth a play - so with a supply of concrete sleeper Easitrac sprues, some code 40 flat bottom rail, a supply of copperclad sleepers and a couple of 2mmFS track gauges it was time to play.

Out of the box

I couldn't wait any longer, I just had to unwrap it all and check that everything was there.   The parts list is included with the 6 sheets of A4 that make up the instructions. Not for one moment did I even think that there would be anything missing, but I did need to get a feel of that brass.   Three very clean frets - not that my photography in this room helped show them to their full glory but you get the impression of them being well laid out with nice fine fret tabs and just about enou

CJM 92

My once in a lifetime treat arrived today, 92002 H G Wells. I cannot sufficiently describe how good this model is, it really is by far the most astonishing loco. Details include drivers and fully painted control desks!   These pictures speak for themselves - and remember, this is N gauge!   David

We start with a box

So this is as much an experiment in blogging as it is in describing a new kit build. With the former I feel very much like a fish out of water for the latter .... let's just say "well here we go again".   Last weekend I attended my first Manchester show - in fact the first time I had been to Manchester. The show was most enjoyable and entertaining but I'll reserve judgment on the city. Some stunning layouts there with my top 3 being Crumley & Littlewickhill, Blackmill and Harlyn Road. But

Modelling Foster Yeoman PTAs

Continuing from my thread on oldRMweb, I have made a little more progress on my rake of Foster Yeoman PTA The underframe ribs are now completed, adding the reinforcements to the outer headstocks and the wider ribs over the bogies. The headstock reinforcement was fabricated with the chopper set to carefully cut along its length to get the two heights (a further small step needed removing from one corner to allow clearance over the packing pieces which support the ribs. Whereas the ribs themsel

Wilderspool Causeway - the start

The top lines are the passenger, this will be at a higher level, the track plan is similar to Shaw, it will be a single arriving and double departing (from left to right) with a reversing siding available for turn backs.   The bottom lines are the truncated remains of a once through line, freights will arrive from the left and the loco will run off and "run round" them, they then depart, this means that a freight will need to be only a few wagons long.   The juxaposition will be arranged dur

Okay I could copy them over however fresh start what   Bob's Carriage Shop - JLTRT 7mm Mark 2f DBSO   To be followed by a bringing up to date series of articles....(for which there are lots) honest! __________________________________________

An Introduction and background

This blog aims to cover the development, and eventual construction of my next layout, Bodmin Central. The layout is based around three assumptions detailing how the town of Bodmin developed in this alternative reality,   Firstly, I have kept a number of closed lines open, covering both the line to Bodmin General, and the second branch to Wentford (which will be further serving the north Cornish coast. To further ensure maximum interest, the Wentford clay works will still be operational (and

A better plan...

Following the thinking on the background, I've done a bit more playing with the plan. First up, an extension to the original one:   This adds in the branch line with sidings infront of the fiddle yard. The back siding would be hidden, allowing a branch passenger train to head off stage. The front pair of platforms has had a crossover added - to allow freight and parcels trains to be run round - the intention being that the nearside road is used for parcels traffic, the far for branch pass
