Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

What have I done?

This little chap arrived on the doorstep yesterday (thanks scanman!)     So, nice though it is, it won't fit on my track so my thoughts have turned to what to do. For a while the "home" layout has not really been in use, the main problem is extensive use of setrack rad 1 curves which means that a lot of locos can't handle it. For servicing purposes I have needed a rad 2 loop for some time.     Back in the mists of time the original board (extreme right hand of the diagram above) was a

Gloucester road - playing trains

Took some time to trainspotting today and caught 56074 out earning revenue. Will be interesting to see the Dapol class 56 compares to the old Farish one.   56074 in Brimsley, with what looks like Thomas lurking in the background   56074 passing the the signals which need wiring in   passing through Upper Brimsley   heading into the tunnel   arriving into Gloucester Road   Though I did some modelling, see Scalescenes thread, it is nice to sit back and watch the trains run

slight progress

Hello all, as per the title I have made some slight progress today; I've now purchased some tools from squires and have prepared a list:   After much deliberation I've broken the work in two main areas, the body and the chassis. Body first, Chassis second   step 1   Finnish removing the printed decals Repair the cracks Remove the molded detail, handrails etc modify the buffer beam detail the body, wire handrails, mesh grilles etc step 2(chassis)   modify the chassis appropria

Back to the photo diorama

Yesterday I quickly knocked up a warehouse facade and assembled a Knightwing portacabin for my little photo diorama. They’re both rush jobs as I wanted to get the diorama nearer completion and neither have been fixed down, finished, detailed or weathered. I’d also recently managed to get some ‘grass’ laid on it.   However, I doubt I’ll be able to get it finished in time for the NGS AGm due to a lack of time and other commitments (including the looking after of Aussie relative visito

HST Rewheeling

Finally got round to making a start on re-wheeling my second pair of HST powercars.   The first step was the removal of the OO wheels, break gear and cutting off the huge lump which is the NEM coupling pocket, the break gear was all put away to be re attached once the powercars have been fully tested, however further modification will be required to reduce the width to something better matching the wheels....   Once that was out the way the next job was to bore out the axle boxes to accept

South Devon Railway - Easter 2010

The first of my Easter trips is now up on my Weebly. Not the best day for photography, but I have put a fair few up.   Still waiting to be uploaded are photos from a sunny day at the West Somerset and a few from Okehampton. These will follow in a few days.   This summer, I expect to be visiting Paington, Woody Bay, West Somerset (Tornado) and Bluebell (50th celebrations). A return to South Devon is also likely.   I will upload a few more samples to my gallery on RMWeb once I have finished

Rethink

After my disaster with the Mk.I baseboard I've had time to reflect upon the plans for my layout. It's really difficult deciding what to model when a) you've never done it before, B) don't want to make expensive mistakes and c) are conscious of the fact that you don't really know that much about trains. I'm still going to stick with the idea of basing my layout on something that has gone before me so I know at least I'm heading in the roughly the right direction. But the layouts I like the most a

Laser cutting commissioning for the viaduct virtually ready to go

After a very pleasant and productive planning session yesterday, interspersed with copious provisions provided by Mrs 10800, we're now virtually ready to go with the commissioned laser cutting of the fiddly repetitive bits for the viaduct. Final tweaking of the specification and scope is going on with York Modelmaking today. The laser cutting work will comprise 74 balustrade sections with 19 arches in each; the main arch sections for the eight pavilions (semicircles on squares, very Renaissan

getting there - removing ballast

Hello   It was a job I was NOT looking forward to but its done now. I have managed to remove all the ballast on the board.     It took a while to do it but chipping away at it with a flat bladed screwdriver seemed to work. There a a couple of pieces of track that need to be stuck down again and then the whole lot needs repainting but otherwise Im glad that bit is over.   Missy

Little done on layout, but nevertheless an update.

Not done much on Somercombe since my last entry. I was hoping to get some done this week with my week of rest days, but I left myself available and ended up with 4 rest days work, so far. One of the little jobs I am doing, is to crew the rest of my steam loco's. I am using Masterpiece Falcon Figures. I have tried other makes, but the variety of poses makes these, in my mind, the best.     Just added crews to four more this morning, my 2 Q1s, a Black 5 and my 8F. First time using my phone

Why I'm not modelling..

Nothing to do with trains I'm afraid, but a rare little moment I thought I'd share , from early this morning while most folk are asleep.   Most of the time , when I get home from work im not in the mood or too tired to do much modelling - I work in a Marina in london, so my shifts vary with the tides - anything from 04.00 to 21.00 Being out in the fresh air amongst the boats in all weather takes it out of you! Locking out onto the Thames early this morning was an RAF Seaplane Tender - w

11 - Kyle - Ballast - Part I...

Update - Been putting it off for some time but after sourcing some Spanish PVA, it was time to start. Normally I lay the ballst dry and then give it the good soaking method, however with my concerns that the layout may start to twist and notwithstanding donw's comments to try and prevent this, I decided to work the PVA around the sleepers in short intervals and sprinkle the ballast from a small long stirrer, bought from Muji a while back.   It's slow work and quite tedious as is usual, however

Gloucester road - scalescenes

I have decided to start building the Scalscenes Small Corner shops; at first it will be just the shop fronts finished in low relief and will then move onto the corner shop full size. Progress can be followed in a new thread under the Scalescenes tab in the skills and knowledge section.   Stephen

Introducing Rempton...

It has been some time since i last posted anything about my own endeavours on RMWeb, although I have still been lurking in the background occasionally (work permitting!) and getting very inspired by what I'm seeing.   I was shocked and amazed at the reaction I got to my Nutbrook postings. I was rather pleased with the results of that project (by the way, it's still not completely finished, there are a few details here and there I'm still planning on finishing! - an update to follow shortly) an

The Permanent Way Construction Begins

Well I have finally plucked up the courage and have made two out of the three turnouts. I say courage as these were C&L B6 tunrout kits and I have never scratch built any track before, so I did feel a little trepidation before I started.   The first one was a real challenge and there are a few minor glitches with gauge I think but it was a good learning experience. The second was much better and I found quicker ways of doing things like threading chairs on to rails before cutting them o

New Motiv Power for the Isle of Skye Railway

Today I received two parcels with new motive power. In the first parcel was a GraFar Class 20 which a friend of mine (MacRat) resprayed in the green livery and numbered it D8032. In the other was the Class 27 Body shell from Its N Gauge, which will run on a GraFar Class 33 Chassis. Here some pictures.         Markus

Getting Started....again!

Ok then so I am finally starting my first layout for a while and intend to get it to a point of running some trains this time....     The plan is based around Newquay but with part of the original yard left in and what ever I wish to run making an appearance....Thanks are due to Donw in his comments on the design stage.   I dont like flat boards but dont have the patience/skill to finish woodwork for multiple levels with smooth track, so am trying to build this layout as foam insulation w

Painted Fruit

After priming with Halford's grey primer, I tried using Humbrol Rail Colours Acrylics for the first time.   Dirt Black (RC401) for the underframe. BR Diesel Blue (RC411) for the body. BR Coach Roof Grey (RC412) for the roof. I mistakenly used Garter Blue (RC404) for the body, (why don't they print descriptive text on the tins?)and was happy with that, until I realised my mistake and so applied a thin coat of BR Diesel Blue. I'm still not sure about this colour, but I'm planning to gi

From: The 3-CIG 'Slammer's' last days.

I took the opportunity yesterday to take my last ride on these venerable and extremely comfortable machines on a route that I have a soft spot for. Years of memories of watching them trundle over the bridge at Lymington made it too hard to resist. The Lymington branch racks up another last to follow on from the last steam branch; I wonder if 2050 will be seeing the last Desiro service on the branch with as much interest?       Anyway, I gather there will be a more professional vide

A new way of scratchbuilding... perhaps?

Its been far too long since I managed to do any modelling. Unfortunately this is mainly due to my health at the moment, its been up and down but I appear to be on the mend and after a nice energy drink today I felt up to doing some of the tasks I had set myself last time.   One thing that I wanted to do was to find a quicker way of scratchbuilding structures out of plasticard. I found that laminating things added another level of complication for me and I wanted to try simpler methods. Luckil
