I know that we are celebrating the RAF's centenary, but here are some photos from when the RAF was all of 20 years old.

They come from one of my father's photo albums and are headed "RAF Petrol Fatigue 17.7.38" - so 80 years ago, less a week. There is also a note "Refuelling Vickers Valencia, City of Delhi".

The previous page refers to a visit to Mount Abu in Rajputana so this may provide the location, although there is nothing specific on the page with the aircraft photos.

Best wishes

Eric

A little surprised that the historic jets were not included, I think there are a Meteor, Vampire or Venom and Seahawk but not sure.

Being pedantic, wasn't the Seahawk a Fleet Air Arm aircraft?

Cheers,

MIck

Weren't all the aircraft in the flypast MoD/RAF owned?  I think you'll find all the Meteors/Hunters/Vampires etc are private and thus unlikely to have been allowed over London.

As fabulous as it would have been to see aircraft like that in the centennial fly over, I wouldn't want a Hawker Hunter flying over central London. One ended up destroying a suburban house after an airshow here in Oregon back in 2006.

As nice as it is to see them flying, they are museum pieces. I suspect that the mechanically simpler aircraft (like the WWII warbirds) are safer to fly than vintage jets.

Thought I'd posted a couple of these pics but obviously not. Couple of weekends back we had a surprise evening airdisplay near Crockham Hill by a Spitfire & Hurricane. I assume they were supposed to be displaying over Chartwell although some of the display didn't seem to be in that direction. And it was quiet late in the afternoon so rather dark.

Also last weekend had a Stinson Reliant flying about. I think this one is based at Biggin Hill as I think I've seen it there before

Tried to catch the practise over Lincolnshire the other week, chose the wrong spot after much planning lol.

I will show them but not good as they were quite away from me. Hope may be of some interest. 67 in the practise.

As much as I liked seeing the RAF100 fly past, there appeared to be fewer aircraft involved compared with previous efforts.

Past large flypasts over Buck house have had the likes of 4 C130 Hercules in formation, air tankers with fighters on the wingtips ( mimicking refuelling positions) and more helicopters and training aircraft.

I suppose it's the result of a much reduced Air Force.

The RAF parade put on an impressive show, especially when a section changed formation and regrouped to form the characters, RAF 100.

Hello everyone

Just for info...

I arrived at Heathrow 'Spotters' area' around 16.00 on Wednesday expecting to have a good couple of hours spotting before getting my son over to T3.

Almost immediately, Tower started speaking (118.7) and advised all aircraft that the Tower was being evacuated. They finished with the words "Land at own discretion. Heathrow Tower out".

An Air Astana was on very short final and clearly didn't hear the transmission. He asked if he had landing clearance. He was within feet of landing right opposite us when - rightly - he went around. Terrific engine noise!

Heathrow went peculiarly quiet and the holds soon became pretty full (although I have seen worse). A number of planes had little fuel and diverted to nearby alternatives. Others had relatively high fuel levels on board and were quoting about an hour endurance. ATC certainly earned their money that afternoon but very calmly and efficiently to boot!

Tower was back on air after about 30 minutes and all returned to 'normal' very quickly.

Ah yes, Menie Estate - I believe the Trump org destroyed a SSSI there.  Is the "idiot one" the one with the immigrant wife ?

Nothing against immigrants myself, I know many & we couldn't continue at work without them, but don't the Trumphs want them banned ?
