Something I would be interested to know is what are staff at Northern making the decisions on pacer withdrawals based on. Is it practical things for passengers such as water leaking in windows, toilets out of use, rot etc or is it mechanically if a unit runs well or not that is the decider as to what goes first and what stays longer.

I don't actually know for sure but from past experience they are likely to come out once something major needs swapping out on a B-exam - engine, final drive, wheelset etc. Or it gets bent.

Unreliability may be a factor but they're comparatively reliable compared to other classes (because there isn't anything complicated to go wrong !).

Thank you for the reply and the info.

I suppose when it comes to practical issues regarding passengers the pacers don't have that long left anyway even if some go into 2020, especially not compared to how many years they have already been in service. Surely another few months won't matter, until the majority are withdrawn.

On another note is anyone planning on keeping notes on each of the pacers last workings, date of withdrawal, storage location etc?

I kind of hope that 142049 is preserved as it was a bit of a celebrity in 1986 as it was sent to Vancouver BC, Canada for Expo 86.  It was used on the British Columbia Hydro (BCH) and though there was initial interest, but flange squeal, the self changing gearbox issues and grade crossing crash worthiness killed off the idea.

Agree Sir Douglas, and i'm hoping i'll be able to get out again this week, sounds daft now but as bad as they have been i'll regret not going out whilst i could and i will miss 'em when they've all gone. Just so used to seeing them.

Well, everyone, the first one went earlier today! 142025 was withdrawn from service owing to engine failure. This is from  @PacerPreacher, on Twitter. Farewell, goodbye and amen! ;)

Delving back though my archives for something else I came across this one.  Northern Rail 142049 in Merseyrail livery stands at platform 5 at Huddersfield on 18th December 2005.

Standing behind the Pacer are a couple of class 155 DMUs in the livery of the erstwhile West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.

Oh goodness, that photo’ reminds me of the Derwent Valley Light Railway from York. It had such large amounts of grass on it’s tracks too.

Best regards,

 Rob.

During the War it was allowed to grow as it would disguise the line from the air. Old hand drivers said you could tell the loco that had been along the branch as the wheels and rods were cleaned by the long grass!
