Test runs apart as a gas turbine 18100 lasted barely a year in traffic and even then was restricted in its sphere of operation while as an electric conversion it is doubtful if it even worked any test/training trains once electrification had advanced beyond the Styal Loop and the new ac locos had begun to arrive.

I am sure it was used to test the North Clydeside electric OHLE, I have a vague recollection as a 14 year old (now sixty years on!) of it passing through Queen St. low level and there is this photograph (will remove if copyright offends) of it sitting in a siding outside Coatbridge Sunnyside -

"Not suitable for 3rd radius"

this, last line in the text, stood out for me in the blurb..

Was the 3rd (and 2nd) radius limitation ever mentioned by Rails of Sheffield on their order page? I was rather attracted to E2001 as an example of a late crest loco in black, but I am seriously put off buying one if it won't run on 2nd radius curves, which seem to be a de facto standard in the OO world of model railways.

I think it will be able to negotiate tighter radius curves than 18000 as the bogies are not hidden behind a valence.

It sells to me because I have a 'Prototypes' collection that I'm building, ostensibly for a fictional 'Prototypes' day on the S&P. I have no possible use for it otherwise :)

Yup - exactly my perspective - will join "Lion" and all the others 👍

I’ve checked again with Rails and there are no plans to offer sound versions. It’s a pity but I hope that one of the after market specialists will offer something suitable.

I've got a sound fitted Silverfox version of 18100. Can't remember who it might have been as I got it second hand. But it's pretty convincing and is nicely different from the other gas turbines with sound.

Hopefully won’t be too long now !

They’ve just been updated to Rails webpage for Q4 2023 release.

Last time I looked it was going to be Q4 last year!

I haven't ordered one as I'm not clear what radius curves it needs and I was less than impressed with 18000.

So it's another Wait & See decision.

Now received the announcement with images of their arrival late February. Being a bit pedantic,in their accompanying text, they state it was delivered to BR in 1952. In fact it was displayed at the 1951 Festival of Britain Railway exhibition at Waterloo East .Be that as it may,it does seem that Heljan have made a splendid job of it in both its guises

Legomanbiffo will be doing both types.  https://www.dckits-devideos.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=253_68&page=8

It would be interesting to hear the difference between the sound projects, as to my ears the one being offered directly by Rails of Sheffield sounds like a remapped 18000 file in that video, not much different in startup and main turbine sound.

In fact after having just typed that, I went and pulled up a startup video I had taken of 18000, synced the start times of the compressor, and they are the exact same startup and turbine sounds as each other. I know it's being a little picky, but some variance between the pair would've been nice.

Surely what's important is that they should be authentic?

If this is not possible due to the lack of recordings, having two different, but equally inauthentic sound files is pointless?

I agree with you that they should be authentic where possible, and also accept that this is not always possible.

I also say this without having the research work to hand that would have been available to both Heljan and Rails whilst doing the project, but I believe amongst other things the engines differed in RPMs which would be noticeable at full power, and be remappable in theory with modern sound editing.

I still can't see the point of refining sound that no-one can say is authentic.

I suppose that ignorance is bliss!

Rails report due late February now .........................

Looks splendid (to my untrained Southern Region eye) ................. absolutely love these one-off prototype models from Heljan 👍
