RMweb Live - 13/14 September - Ricoh Stadium, Coventry

So - there's a clash. There are only fifty-two weekends in a year. Some of these are unavailable because of things like Christmas and New Year. Make it a round fifty. And there are a darned sight more than fifty organisations wanting to stage exhibitions. So clashes are inevitable.

Live with it.

I can't argue your logic but don't forget we are talking about shows of national importance not just the local gig in the church hall down the road.  I doubt anyone would want to see an exhibition make a financial loss (remember society shows can be a money spinner not just by making money on the door but but through fresh memberships) or lose important publicity and profile. These are real issues that are not healthy to the hobby, particularly in these cash strapped times. So on the whole it's something I'd rather not live with if it at all possible*.

*then again it's only a hobby isn't it ;)

I`d certainly like to participate and contribute; a demo. of track/turnout construction, trackwork-soldering, advantages of using OMF specs. etc. and a display my OMF and S7 track gauge products or somesuch........Perhaps team up with another on RM-web, similarly interested in trackwork construction (e.g using Templot or ballasting/weathering), to give better coverage to the subject.

Probably be the biggest crowd they ever had there...shame cos its not that long since Coventry won the FA cup :( shame on thier owners... and  total shame on Warners for joining in ) Ill not be there - thats for sure ...I really hope you and all who go there are embarrassed, and no one goes at all/

Edit:

For the hard of reading

I think (and still do) that places like the Ricoh Arena are totally dreadful, "football" sold its soul for such places and the world would be a better place without them

However that is the chosen venue for RMWeb Live and I hope it does really well :) Just not my venue of choice ;)

Hi this is meant to be a show for railway modelling/and other modelling ideas not  repeat not for someone to grind their personal axe re whatever happened to Coventry or football in general so I wish them all the success in this venture with any luck I will be there to show my support

The Ricoh Arena, jointly owned by Coventry City Council and a charitable trust is more than just the football ground with the main exhibition hall, several other large rooms for events a casino and a hotel.

Coventry City Football Club (at that time owned by Sisu Capital, a hedge fund) have had a long-standing dispute with ACL over rent and chose last summer to vacate the site and move to Northampton FC's ground, I believe the Council did try to seek a resolution including a rent-free period. Anyway, that's by the by as the exhibition hall would be available to hire whether the football stadium has a tenant or not so I do not see how those events have any bearing on our event; we're not responsible for or have any involvement with what path CCFC chose to take. I'm not 'embarrassed' by any aspect of that.

In truth I didn't choose the date Pete, it was a very limited number of dates that were available and the only one which didn't clash with other commitments that Warners had so the date was booked by the company. As soon as I realised the date that had been booked I contacted Derek to discuss and wish to ensure that we do everything we can not to negatively impact Expo EM North and indeed actively support through RMweb. We won't be competing over layouts or traders and as both events are on both days hopefully we can maximise folks going to both events.

As a lifelong CCFC fan, I couldn't have put it any better myself Andy and certainly paints an accurate picture for those that seem to be ill informed. SISU OUT !!

Regarding the other comments such as dates clashing, why not turn the fact that the N gauge show is just down the road and make a weekend of it, the stadium also has a hotel in it you know !!

The place itself is a fantastic venue having hosted numerous music concerts, Olympic football, Davis Cup tennis, snooker tournaments, umpteen corporate business conferences Boots & Wickes to name but two and the Casino has recently held some massive Poker event.

To address the question about Warley turning it down in years gone by, if indeed they did, I would have thought it to be size of the hall not comparing to the one used at the NEC as food, drink & parking to name but three items is equal if not better.

Taking on board Scott's comments about food, would there be a SWAG stand demonstrating the manufacture of and selling pasties?

If you don't agree, I guess that idea has gone down Stubbies Pan!

You'd have to be there early doors on the Saturday, or all that would be left would be crumbs !

Famous for Lady Godiva,The Specials and having two cathedrals.More recently it's probably more well known for being the home to A Nod To Brent ! ;)

The natives don't bite.Everyone's welcome.

Does this mean that the Finching Sisters may be putting on some risque entertainment for RM Webbers?

Any decent real ale venues nearby? If I aint working that weekend.

Interesting 'clash of dates' - I'd better start looking for hotel accommodation before it gets booked up. TINGS on Saturday, RMWeb on Sunday? Interesting thought, better start working on all the Brownie points I'd need to get a weekend pass from SWMBO...

If only we could have had a bit more notice, Christmas is a good time to gain Brownie points.  :jester: And to lose them.

Great idea. Location and venue as big a problem as Warley? Unknown element as I have never heard of the venue and haven't a clue about Coventry. Is it even possible to drive there and back in a day and will there be ample parking if I do?

For me, it is very much going to be decided by the quality and quantity of the trade that can be attracted to the event. If this is to be a real National event then it has to attract far more than just the usual box shifters. But I suspect that the best traders have already been claimed/committed by the other shows that will clash.

As for clashing dates, one of my favourite subjects, A national show does not have to avoid local small shows (they are different and it is always difficult to overcome the club/area loyalty factor) but avoiding other national shows and specialist shows should be a priority. If it were clashing say with EMGS in Bracknell, or Scale4um, for example it wouldn't even be considered as an event against these. So I can see that up against EMGS North there would be a similar issue. But that only loses the EM gaugers, and potentially their layouts. Perhaps in year 1 that doesn't matter?

Making this show something different from just another Warley or Ally Pally and not being over commercial despite the obvious sponsorship will be the key to success and not the venue.

I eagerly await the list of trade (amd layouts) attending.

The venue has a large car park but there might be a charge. When the football was on there was as well as the concerts.I've been to train and toy fairs there but I walked but I don't remember seeing a car park charge. The NEC don't charge for their toyfairs. Its early days in planning and nothing has been said on this, however if this is a problem there is plenty of free parking spaces next door in the Tesco Arena car park.Ample and plenty for our needs.

I'd like to see lots of non working layouts actually being worked on like we see on Rmweb. Every exhibition you go to has working layouts. Why not try and make it different by not having one finished layout. I do appreciate this may alienate a lot of Joe Public type punters you may wish to get through the door.

I'd agree about non-finished layouts, although maybe more than one complete one!

Sorry Andy, but I'm going to be negative again.  This reminds me of the Millenium Dome fiasco-we've got a date and a venue, what the heck are we going to put in it?

I do realise that things have moved on from the Member's days we used to have, and that Warners now call the tune. I see that they run their existing shows together with local clubs, and linking one with their forum makes sense.

I think that before we come up with too many ideas on here we need to know

1) the target audience-mainly members or mainly public?

2)the sort of admission fees (if any) and discounts for members as stated above.

This could be a good idea and turn out really well. I hope so and will try to attend. I am also a bit concerned about the short notice, and the clashing issues.

I'll bet some brilliant ideas are forthcoming though.

We will hopefully have some good news for folk on that in due course and with regard to transport from the station.

I cannot see how you jump to such a conclusion; we've announced the date and we're working on content, when that's all sorted we'll let folk know what's going to be going on. The 'target audience' is RMweb members and to show non-members what RMweb is about and give them a different experience. It really is a mega opportunity to break the mould a little, I could have left announcing the event until everything's confirmed but we're wanting to be inclusive about it all (and then folk would grumble that we haven't given enough notice).

Admission fees (yes, there will be a charge) will be confirmed in due course (as funnily enough there's a lot of costs in putting this event on) but we're looking (as with other RMweb events) to give content which event-goers will need to spend a very full day (possibly two!) taking it all in and getting the most from the event.

I'm looking forward to this - not been to any of the larger RMweb events so it will be good to see & meet more of the RMweb community.

I also don't see 9 months as short notice - maybe I'm not in touch with the usual time needed to pre-book a layout for a show. However, I'll bet there are many forum layouts which have not yet seen any public and whose owners would be willing to debut at this show.

As others have said, demonstrations, master classes, etc from some of our members would be superb - for me it would be of buildings...

Need to check the domestic front, but as Jack hinted earlier, Shepherds could be brought if required.
