RMweb Premium Chris116 Posted January 1, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1, 2021 The Crich photos bring back some great memories. I first visited Crich when I was about 15 and returned 45 years later for another visit both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. The Blackpool Standard has a special place in my heart as around the time of my first visit to Crich I was also taken for a day trip to Blackpool and rode on one of them. The conductor informed my aunt that we would have to change trams as double deckers were not run to Fleetwood. When we got to what was supposed to be the turning point for the Standard we were told it would go to Fleetwood as the service ahead of us had broken down. I think I was the only person who was pleased about the breakdown!

RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted January 1, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 1, 2021 This afternoon's photos are all from South Newsham which is on the Blyth and Tyne, on the western edge of Blyth. The fourth photo was taken just after the road had been windened (not by much as the signal box is in the way) and the new markings had not yet been painted. Blyth has about 40,000 residents yet there are only three roads into the town. Fortunately there is almost no through traffic being bounded on two sides by the sea and estuary. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted January 1, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 1, 2021 Happy New Year, David. I hope you will have a healthy and prosperous new year. I like the Crich photo’s which are full of interest, and in C14184, with Gateshead number 5, on the 7th April, 1990, in addition to the tram you can see good examples of enamel signs. It’s good to know such signs have been preserved. The South Newsham photo’s on the Blyth and Tyne are fascinating, and how I love the atmospheric effect in J10983, with a class 56 on an up light engine movement, in June, 1990. With warmest regards, Rob. 1

I did venture into the Car Park and look over the hedge, (cheapskate? yes I know). Nice photos, maybe I shouldn't have been so tight. 1

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted January 2, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 2, 2021 Good evening, David. I like the latest Blyth and Tyne photo’s all of which are of interest. The first photo’ is a superb portrait shot of 56112 at Winning on a light engine movement on the 23rd February, 1990. Then in J9432, at Cambois you have an excellent photo’ of 56115, on another light engine movement, with sidings to the left background, in February, 1988. With warmest regards, Rob.
SouthernBlue80s
I especially like the latest Blyth photos David. It is amazing that what seemed so permanent disappeared so rapidly. Best wishes for the new year. Steve.
Bedlington North
During my first year at First school in Newcastle in 1981, we went on a school trip that took us to Blyth harbour. We visited an RNLI lifeboat that was moored near Bates Staithes and we watched Cresswell tieing up to her moorings as well as wagons being shunted on the West Staith. I was only mildly interested at the time, whereas now I would love to be able to go back in time to that day and take it all in! It still seems a slightly odd place for a school trip. So J8263 has evoked lots of memories for me of that day! Edited January 2, 2021 by Bedlington North 3 1

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 3, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2021 (edited) J8716 is a fantastic photo. It would be a good contender for the “DMUs in the Landscape” thread. Cheers Darius PS - who is that hiding by the hedge? Edited January 3, 2021 by Darius43

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted January 3, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2021 Good evening, David. I like the Bowes Railway at Springwell, Gateshead, photo’s, which are all of interest. In C11751, with the kip of the self acting incline, on the 27th March, 1989, you have a well detailed view which I’m sure will be of use for model making purposes. The photo’s starting at Durham and going north to Gateshead are fascinating and in C09559, at Low Fell with 56129 on a down empty coal train, on the 28th June, 1988, you have captured a typical view of a 56 hauled train which is now history, and can only be seen in photo’s such your excellent ones. Apparently the first fitted with that engine replacing the original Paxman Valenta, it was perhaps fitting it should also be the last one in service. Possibly the first MML one - but, surely, the first VP185-fitted ones were 43167-170 (on the Western, in 1993), which received VP185s for evaluation, after abandonment of the Mirrlees-Blackstone MB190s that they were fitted with in the late 1980s (replacing Valentas), for the same purpose? 43167-170 then, later, being fitted with MTUs, after the WR (might have been Great Western Trains, or even First Great Western, by then) decided to go with MTU for full fleet re-equipment. Apologies if I'm misinterpreting the intended meaning of your original statement.

While I do take an interest in things more locally I'm not too sure of national developments and, especially nowadays, I completely lose track of time, for example how long it is since I went to Dawlish in the latter days of class 47s on XC!

RMweb Premium keefer Posted January 4, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 4, 2021 C11648 - right place, right time to have caught that one Dave. Would make an interesting (and usefully short) train for a layout and would certainly get the 'experts' thinking! 1

The reconfigured GWR "Castle" sets would meet that requirement too: some of them are running now with just 3 coaches + 2 power cars (saw one yesterday on the Dawlish cam!).
