brigo
Not necessarily, you can defer non-security updates for several months. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/defer-upgrades-in-windows-10 As far as I'm aware, you aren't forced to upgrade, and MS support for 7 and 8 will continue for a good few years yet. Depends upon which version you have. If it's the plain version you cannot defer updates. Only with the Pro and Enterprise versions can you defer. Basically home users are becoming guinea pigs for any updates, fixes etc, before business users have to install them. can anyone confirm if windows media player is re installed with the win10 upgrade, I read somethng when I went to have a look and it said it was unavailable at first? Steve edit for spelling Media Player Windows Media Center is no more. Upgrading to Windows 10 removes it and it cannot be re-installed. 4th item here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/compatibility-report-windows-10 Brian G. raymw
Took less than an hour while it installed on the desktop. Have to get used to it. A bit worrying, part way through, seemed to stall, but then carried on. When finished, plain desktop, no icons, but opening the desktop folder brought everything back (all 126 icons) and fences. Everything seems to be working fine. Many file associations have changed, but very quick to alter that in settings (or individually in properties). Things are in different locations for adjustments, compared to W7, but I think much better. VLC is working, I never re-installed, don't know if it did, or left it alone. I expect I'll find some things that are broken, but my pc is more cluttered than most, with lots of specialised bits and pieces. So far, so good. I think I'll be trying to do things the Microsoft way, one drive, Cortana, etc. but their company ethos has changed considerably over the last few years. Early days yet, but I am surprised at how the two installs I've made have worked so smoothly, but it will be a new way of working, in some areas, for me. RMweb Gold JCL Posted August 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2015 I found this Brian, which might be of interest http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/. The article says it works with Home edition, but unfortunately I can't test this. cheers Jason

RMweb Gold RFS Posted August 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2015 I think there may be some confusion here: it's Windows Media Centre that has been discontinued not Windows Media Player which is still there.
RMweb Premium melmerby Posted August 6, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 6, 2015 (edited) If Media Player no longer exists, what the Hell am I watching MP4 video on??? Whatever's installed on Win10 by default looks and works just like a new version of Media Player to me... I don't know but I'm guessing media play is integrated into the main program rather than as a stand alone app as before. Windows Media Player used to be independent of the OS and was updated at different times. Keith EDIT just seen RFS's post. What's is what? RMweb Gold RFS Posted August 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2015 On my system that was simply upgraded to W10, it shows under "all apps" as a separate entry. On my laptop that was first upgraded, and on which I subsequently did a clean install from ISO, it appears under Windows Accessories. Don't care how it's updated, so long as it's there. Plays all my video clips with no problem.
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted August 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2015 I am very reluctant to change yet. I already have more than enough problems with Windows updates that create problems rather than resolve them. Really can not afford to risk yet more problems on a computer that we also use for work purposes.

The article says it works with Home edition, but unfortunately I can't test this. cheers Jason Thanks Jason. That's very useful to know. Although it is in the Wi-fi settings they infer that it will work on a wired connection as well. Someone, somewhere will always find a work around or tweak for most software problems these days. If Media Player no longer exists, what the Hell am I watching MP4 video on??? Whatever's installed on Win10 by default looks and works just like a new version of Media Player to me... Whoops, hands up, my mistake. I realised what the OP meant and forgot to change the terminology in my answer. It is Windows Media Center which is removed and cannot be replaced. The link I gave does refer to Center rather than Player. Windows Player is still there but it cannot be used to play DVDs. I believe Microsoft have or will have an app to do so but charge for it. Just use VLC instead. Talking of VLC, it seems no matter what I do in the set up it always opens in full screen mode rather than the native resolution of the file. Any ideas ? Brian G. RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted August 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2015 It's now on my desktop ready to install - guess what tonights job is.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted August 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2015 The installation will at some point tell you to "sit back and relax" so do just that. Should be grateful it doesn't say "go wash the dishes" or "decorate the spare room"... I already have a voice that says that - strangely its feminine and almost like it's standing behind me at times. emt_911
I'm still waiting for my work related software to be tested against W10 by numerous companies. Considering that quite a few programs don't run on 8 and 8.1 I can't take the risk. Until then it certainly isn't going to happen here.

Keith Go to Windows Update->Installed updates, remove KB3035583. You will also need to hide the update again in windows updates to prevent it from auto installing again since this is marked “important”. RMweb Premium Tim Dubya Posted August 6, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 6, 2015 (edited) Can you not mark the update hidden? You need to remove it first (see post #99). Once removed, restart your machine. It will appear again as an "important" update in windows update. Right click it (KB3035583) and check "hide update", otherwise it will keep returning in the list of available updates. Reboot your machine and continue to enjoy RMWeb! RMweb Premium melmerby Posted August 6, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 6, 2015 A friend of mine still uses XP at work and it still gets genuine updates & patches. Apparently, it is an expensive surcharge for the corporate world & each year the cost goes up by 50%. He's in Air Traffic Control. They're looking at a date of next year for getting rid of XP, I believe. Plenty of EPOS machines still using a version of XP professional and last time I looked the local Health Authority was still on XP. I suppose if your big enough and have the clout MS would be daft to force you to change with all the upheavel new menus etc. could cause. (You might go Mac instead!) Keith But that is exactly what they are doing by doubling the cost of 'supporting' what they regard as an 'obsolete' operating system. Any same accountant faced with a year on year doubling of large bits of the IT budget will be demanding action - and of coarse every big cooperate that upgrades leaves a smaller and smaller number of companies still using XP. Just because they happen to be an NHS trust will not spare them big bills for if they do nothing - and of course the danger of finding themselves unsupported. After all when the number of XP users hits a low figure Microsoft WILL end support and that will be it. NR have recently embarked on a programme to rid themselves of XP desktops (though there are no plans to remove the XP based software used on some non internet connected signal logging / tech terminals). raymw
Had a vist from Somerset county council. They are apparently going through the throes of updating all their machines. They are upgrading to XP, well that is what the guy said. If so, it sort of confirms my suspicions of local gov.
