Hi. In a dvd forum, which I have been reading, there is a somewhat concerning posting (post number 63) about  windows updates in windows10. Apparently you no longer have the abilty to download and choose which updates to install, you have to agree to install all updates and features. Here's the link:http://www.zetaminor.com/roobarb/showthread.php?46464-Windows-10/page5

I, personally, shall be staying with windows7 for as long as I can. It is better to be in some control over what is going on - look at those updates which have caused problems in the past. Also, as others have said, the tiles are still there, albeit to a lesser extent. I think that it is for the experts to be doing the beta testing as well.

With regards,

Market65.

Hackers and viruses feast on unpatched PCs.  There are far, far more problems caused by people not applying security patches, than applying them and then having a problem. If all Windows PCs were up to date with security patches the world would  be a much more secure place.

As far as the tiles are concerned, there are a bunch of them which are there by default when you first install W10.  But you can unpin some or all of them if you wish. My W10 PC has no tiles anywhere and it almost looks like W7.

I installed Windows 10 earlier today onto Windows 8:1 that I thought was awful. I am very much a function person. I have little interest in anybody trying to sell me something or what a programme looks like. I am more interested in how it performs.

Windows 8:1 crashed regularly when I tried to play certain videos through my Firefox browser. Windows 10 seems more stable but still hangs badly on videos. I am also having some problems with functionality on Facebook but I reckon that all that bandwidth being used by the downloads going on will have an effect on things for a while to come.

I do miss Windows 7 because it had some really useful free programmes and games bundled in with Windows and it did everything I asked of it without demur. The only reason I changed was because a really nasty virus ripped my hard drive partitions to bits and nothing seems able to recover it. I suppose I could fit a new drive and use the recovery discs and I might do that after the year is up so that it doesn't upgrade automatically.

Windows 10 is free to all users with Windows XP and above. You have a year to make up your mind about it and if you don't qualify or go beyond the year it will cost £99.

As I see it, this is MS way of regaining the lost ground in the mobile phone market where Android and others have gathered pace. I think also that any of those free programmes will now be charged or won't run.

Upgraded to 10 tonight from 8.1. Took a couple of hours but no problems encounted. Backed up my documents to external disk before starting but needn't have bothered as photos, vids and music (already backed up anyway) were untouched as were all progs like Winamp, VLC etc. Looks a lot better than 8.1 so far and certainly no slower - not yet found out if boot up is slower. Not yet loaded Microsoft Golf which would not run on 8.1 but I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Upgrade took about 80 minutes from Win 8.1.

Sprog and Decoder Pro survived!

No sound after upgrade but clicking in 'default'on the sound driver solved that.

In the Specifications for Windows 10 they talk about "Full Localization Languages" including English (United Kingdom), English (United States).

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-specifications

This separation was apparently new in Windows 8.

I decided to download the ISO file for Windows 10 and amongst the language options you have to choose between English or English International. :scratchhead:

No consistency in terminology. I think the US use English and the UK use English International but I've only figured that out by seeing which version UK retailers are selling.

I've read around Win10, and will hang on for a month to get the first issues out in the open and possibly fixed. This is supposed to be the last distinct version on Windows, and as far as I'm aware there will be 10 years of free updates. You don't get to choose updates at the moment, but one website mentioned that after a disastrous graphics card update non-security updates may become optional. If you have an enterprise version you will have more control.

... I am very much a function person. I have little interest in anybody trying to sell me something or what a programme looks like. I am more interested in how it performs....

This reminds me of a software engineering colleague at work who never fails to dismiss ergonomics as "prettifying".

The result: a recent program designed to enable 2,000 people to register for a conference and make a range of session choices resulted in more than 3,000 (sic!) individual emails from people who couldn't see how to reset their passwords or to make the choices between options...

Design is about both function and form - the form being a critical component of good functioning. Why else would Boeing and Airbus spend so much time and money designing the layouts of their flight decks?

Got home last night only to see a message on my main PC that its not compatible with windows 10 due to there being no suitable video card driver.

Oh well, quite happy with WIndows 7 on it.

Must be pretty ancient then?

How about the maker of the video card's website?

I've had occasional MS updates to video cards that crash the card but the one from the maker is fine. (why?)

I tend to stick to manufacturers for their drivers and leave MS to the patches for the OS.

I'm gonna stick with 7 for the mo, but I'm downloading the win 10 ISO from MS for installation later (and after everyone else has suffered their installs, so I can make an informed choice - or something like that).

Actually I might just whip out all my SSD's / HDD's and chuck some new one's in (they're cheapish enough these days), chuck 7 with sp1 on, then fire 10 at my machine...

or I might just go down the pub and not worry about it?

Anyway, link to the MS Media Creation Tool for win 10 if ya wants it (you know you do).

Happy PC murdering  :fool:

Edit:

Looks like you can do a clean install of 10 if you create a bootable DVD from the ISO (so no need to install 7 or 8.1 first)

Can't get that tool to work!

It downloads it, runs it, gives a choice of media, version and language and a place to save it. When I have selected it reports "Something happened" and stops.

EDIT tried about 6 times - same result.

If it ain't broke......... And my windows 7 ain't broke!

I acquired my HP Color Laserjet on Freecycle because the previous owner couldn't get it to work with Windows 8. If there's even the slightest chance I might have to waste hours messing about trying to get it to work, or worse still, buy a new printer, I'm not risking it. It's one of my most important railway modelling tools!

fwiw -

The Microsoft windows insider programme had about five million members, more or less anyone could sign up, and test, suggest improvements to W10. I like the concept of using more or less one ui on most devices, notebook, tablet, phone, etc., so I bought a cheap HP laptop, with win 8.1 installed specifically to get used to 8.1 gui, and to test out w10. HP put another 'layer' on top of the OS, since most of my PC's are 'home built', that was an annoyance, until I decided to 'go with the flow'. I installed one of the w10 insider releases to said laptop about 2 months ago. It worked fine, until I rebooted, then I couldn't log in, the password entry box did not show. Searching around, I found a few solutions, none of which worked for me, so I reverted the lap toptop w8.1. The other night (Weds?), I instigated the released w10 install. The installation was by far the easiest of any windows installs I've undertaken, and I've been with M$ stuff (and others) for the past 50 years, so I've come across a few hiccups in that time. Towards the end of the install you can make choices about how much info you want to feed back to M$. if you are worried about your porn searches being tracked/whatever.

In my few hours of testing It works perfectly, even with software I've written on my w7 m/c, and simply copied the .exe files over. Some of the new features, once they are developed further, (e.g. Cortana) will be extremely useful. I tested it last night, on a windows phone, with a friend in Leeds, with a Yorkshire accent (I'm frum Devon) by turning my land-line phone to loudspeaker, he asked what the weather was like in Edgbaston today, and 'she' replied with the correct answer. A few years back (1982?) I was sort of involved with the development of IBM's OS2, and their voicetype was good for the day, but nowhere near as good as  Cortana.

Anyway, my desktop main pc is running w7, enterprise version, so I'm thinking that will be a fresh install of w10, with the hassle of reloading my software, and at the same time I'll be going from 32 to 64bit. Not too much of a worry, since that machine is backed up to my server every night. If it was a retail version, I would be onto w10 immediately. I think they've more or less got it right, this time round, but if you want the benefits, then your mindset has to change.

http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-service-release-1-expected-to-roll-out-next-month you will be assimilated   :sungum:

Best wishes,

Much coverage of Windows 10 on this site: http://www.theregister.co.uk/. The consensus seems to be that you shouldn't use it yet - it's still broken and urgent fixes will be around soon.  If you do need/want to try it now, don't install with Microsoft Update as that is very broken; instead, download an ISO image and install from that. (And if you don't know what an ISO image is, I'd suggest waiting until they get it working from Microsoft Update).

XP itself hasn't actually died, there are plenty of organisations still using it and they AFAIK still get support from MS. It's the home user/small business that lost the support.

Keith

A friend of mine still uses XP at work and it still gets genuine updates & patches. Apparently, it is an expensive surcharge for the corporate world & each year the cost goes up by 50%. He's in Air Traffic Control. They're looking at a date of next year for getting rid of XP, I believe.

typical register b0llocks. There will be millions of folk installing it, using it with no problems, and working to get it better. Very much like the rivet counters on here expecting it all to be rtr just in the way they want it.
