RMweb Premium wagonbasher Posted March 9, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 9, 2017 Can it be made to 14mm gauge? I'll let Damian answer but until a couple of months ago the expectation was that the coaches would be scratch built. Andy
RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted March 9, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 9, 2017 Can it be made to 14mm gauge? Yes - sold with either 16.5mm or 14mm wheel sets - see here at EDM Models http://www.ngtrains.com/Pages/SLP/slaters.html .
Indomitable026
I ordered 14mm I'll check later what actual wheels I've got
RMweb Premium Mark Forrest Posted March 9, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 9, 2017 Out of curiosity, how does that normally work; do both 16.5 and 14mm gauges use a standard (i.e. 26mm long) axle like with 00, EM and P4 or does 14mm normally mean shorter axles? RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted March 9, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 9, 2017 And here's a photo of it finished... Love the livery.
Indomitable026
Right then, This is momentous occasion - making a start on my first item of L & B rolling stock, the assembly of a Slaters kit in to Coach No 15. Interestingly I cannot remember the last time a built a kit, it must be years...
Indomitable026
Here's all the main bits; Outer sides Inner sides Roof and floor Inner and outer ends Seats Bits I've not spotted any glazing and the wheels are 16.5mm. Very nice quality.

Mark, the picture below answers your question. Judging the way the bogie is assembled the axle will be the same length for 14mm and 16.5mm.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted March 11, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 11, 2017 Seems a fair bit of flash for a new mould. Haven't built a Slaters kit for years but I remember pretty clean mouldings, I wonder if the length has something to do with it to get the pressure right to fill it well. I do like the inner and outer sides to get all that detail on though. Looks very nice indeed.
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted March 11, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2017 Best bit is that Slater's will sell any of the kit sprues separately, so you can have a good starting point for other coach types not produced.

It looks like you have to build an inner and outer body, the latter then slides over the former as below. Could be interesting.

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted March 11, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 11, 2017 Yes the design does look good and the fact the flash is only in the centre suggests over pressure, whether by design, to fill it before it cools, or accident
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted March 11, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 11, 2017 You still could be...No no no I still haven't built the DHR tanks I bought from a Paul yet, the last thing I need is to start adding L&B kits to the pile I walked on very quickly at Shepton to avoid temptation. I reckon I can get sound in an 009 2-6-2 but not in a 009 DHR so I'll stick to them in O16.

Indomitable026
I've made a start on cleaning the flash off the mouldings, first are the two outer sides. The quality and definition is clear to see.
Indomitable026
Quite a lot of work required to clean up the inner sides Getting there...
Indomitable026
The two parts now offered up together. All windows line up nicely, the top of the inner side is higher than the outer. Oh and I've found the glazing strips now.
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted March 12, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 12, 2017 D, something worth considering would be to replace the delicate plastic truss rods with a brass section assembly. The plastic ones always seem to end up either wavey or bust. I've done this with my Slaters Maunsell coach. Far more robust. Unfortunately i did mine as a retrofit after building the coach as per the instructions and then breaking one. Much harder to do when the coach is built. I used the plastic truss rod as a template for the brass one before cutting it off.
Indomitable026
Moving forward A couple of the horizontal window frames are warped and may have to be cut out.
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted March 12, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 12, 2017 D, email the photos of the warped sides to Slaters and ask if they will send you a replacement. I've found them very good at supplying replacements for missing or damaged parts.
