My photo also shows a different cab/bunker side profile. That curved profile in the kit is rather 'overdone' and was found on the early batches 6400-29. The cab side cutout is also a strange shape in the kit.

I agree, The bunker on the 6403 is higher than the windows on the cab rear.  I will alter the lower curve on the cab side as it does look wrong. A very easy task to do. (That's a lovely photo to assist too, thanks)

Hi The bunker on the early 64xx i.e. 4603 & 12 the bunker is higher than the tanks, covering the lower parts of the windows. Also the front curve of the cab cut is wrong on the model.

Thanks for all the comments and photos, they are appreciated.

Hi Just managed to do a little on 6403 as I got back to the WB earlier than expected. The cab openings have been reprofiled and I think they look much better. They need a little attention from filler to smooth them off.

Well right or wrong the windows will have to stay as they are. By the time the bunker is stacked with coal who will notice? Onwards and forwards as they say.

I don't blame you but since yours is one of the threads that has 'Build Reference' status, it's worth ensuring that kit errors are at least recorded and supported by photo evidence for other builders.

Thanks for that Dave.  After all the confusion I guess all in all I am going to go for a top feed with plain GWR green livery and hope I have it right.

Hi.  A little bit done today as went went to the theatre to see Spiderman in 3D.  (Amazing in 3D)

Anyway, this is all I managed today. I changed the water filler tops with ones from my spares box. I did not like the kit ones at all.  The firebox door needed a lot of filing to insert into the f/box ring. So the only two adjustments so far has been that and the differing water tank lengths, so not so bad.

The rear cab windows are becoming a bit of a bugbear now after coming across a great photo of 6403 which shows the windows are not a deep as the front ones. I may see if adjustments are possible without too much trouble.

Here is todays work.

Hi.  Added some more detail today plus reduced the depth of the rear cab windows to just below the bunker top.  Now looks more like the prototype photos. The delicate window protection bars are left untouched and will be hidden by the coal, so no problem there.

Tomorrow I will tackle the back head and inside valve gear, that will leave very little left to do on it. Should be running on TRENRUTH this weekend. (I hope)

A productive day on the WB. Just the cab interior detail to knock up tomorrow, then clean up and start the painting. Oh, and the dummy valve gear to install. So that will probably take all day.

The buffers needed some work on the cast buffer housings and a little bit of filing in the drill with a file on the shanks to get them operating smoothly. I also changed the white metal safety valves for some really nice lost wax brass ones.

Hi. Achieved my goal of running on Trenruth for the w/end.  Now on with the painting. Tomorrow, toting in the painting, then the lettering etc and varnish prior to a little weathering.

Had an hour or so to spare so decided to decorate 6403.  Amazing how that transforms it I think. So tomorrow will just require the backhead painting and varnishing before final finishing is done.

Looks very good, Ken.

Might I suggest a bit of plasticine or blue tak in the wheel-screw slots, touched over with a dab of paint?

Best

Simon

Hi Simon.   Not a bad idea, I was going to swop the screws with Slater's. But the blue tack sounds perfect and I had not thought of that, thanks.

Hi Ken ,

What make are the wheels?

Cheers,

Peter

They are the ones supplied by Springside in the which are there own produced wheels.  They say they are the same as Slater's except they use screws, hence my thought I would swap the screws for Slaters as they are a perfect fit, that is until Simon suggested filling the slot with blue tack which worked well.

Finally on her first roster.   Just a touch of weathering needed around the wheels and brake area.

The wheels look a whole lot better with the screw head slots filled in with blue tack, thanks to Simons suggestion.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all.  I've been beavering away on my layout TRENRUTH recently.  Here is a shot of the cattle dock which was completed this morning with the addition on farmer Parry's ex military truck he purchased recently from a army surplus auction. He is herding some cattle into the pens for loading up. (he's out of sight behind he truck) I cannot think what he's doing there.  Now the cows are in the pen and boxed in, his farm hands have gone on to the goods shed to organise collection of goods to take back to the farm.

Any way is now on with the next build. This is a LFB Jubilee. The tender is quite straight forward, but then I have built and awful lot of these over the years.

Now is on with the loco chassis. All is again fairly  straight forward, quite a but of filing and polishing up of the slide bars & crossheads to get them smoothly running. Also a bit of jiggery pokey to actually  get the valve gear running correctly. The coupling rods ran perfect first time, lovely jubilee.

Now for the worst part, the body. In particular will be the s/box,  boiler and firebox all lined up. Always had a problem with that bit.

The chassis photos as far as I can until the body is built.
