Off-topic, but does anyone know why there are no Spalding-Peterborough trains this Saturday (8th)?

There is engineering work between Kings Cross and Peterborough and the Spalding service is a bus to Grantham so presumably the engineering work goes north of Peterborough.

According to a thread on RailUK forums there was track circuit problems on the Up fast this morning:

Not related to the dive under but actually in the station on platform 3, it was showing on signal maps like that last night ...

The orange army were on it today and trains normally on UF were using P1 or P2

BTW On RTT, 4E59 was showing as going via Werrington Jn, rather than use dive under, however it went through platform 7 which does not have access to the Down Main and did not record a time for Werrington Jn. so must have used the dive under.

Does anyone know why the dive-under is not being used by freight for all journeys up and down the joint line?

6E30 Whitemoor to Doncaster currently traversing the diveunder.

Thanks for the news. I am staying home with my hot soup etc...  ;) :) I hope to be out on the bike next week, weather permitting.

Certainly no point for any freight travelling north/south on the ECML south of Peterborough nor into the yard whether to stop or for staffing reasons. Not all staffing change are made at the station platforms or in the platform area.

A quick visit to Hurn Road this afternoon.

The new access road, beyond the fence, to the dive under has been getting plenty of use judging by the dirty state near the entrance off Hurn Road.  There is still some machinery working to the extreme right of the photo but no obvious signs of what was going on.  Quite a bit of standing water on the field as well.

The concrete entrance to the old site access at Hurn Road is being broken up and taken away.  It is a shame that it is being removed as it would have made a nice parking area for those wishing to visit the north end of Hurn Road.  The arguement is that the land has to be re-instated but his little part was actually the driveway to the bungalow that stood there before demolition, so in theory it should be hardstanding.

Until the buddleia starts to take over.

And there is plenty of space for substantial growth in spaces between tracks and the dive under.

I must revisit but, very sadly, to do so is rather a long distance for me at present and a period of time I cannot afford. Normal life is on hold for now so this update is very welcome ...

Trains on the ECML, mostly around Werrington Junction. Use of the dive-under captured.  January 4th, 10th, 12th and 13th 2022. A YouTube film by Trackside ECML:

Trains are still varying from the scheduled route.(RTT)

e.g. 4E25 (Bow, London to Heck, Doncaster) is scheduled on the down fast and through Werrington Jn.

It's actually gone via the diveunder.

4E21 (Felixstowe to Doncaster) did likewise.

Real Time Trains seems to have nothing scheduled via the diveunder during daylight, including those previously using it, so I suspect something amiss in their listings.

It is odd, according to the video posted by Crun, just how few freights are using the dive-under. Maybe he missed many of them, but he certainly recorded more (for the Joint) using the surface route. Some may have been going south of Peterborough, but container trains?? (unless going West via the NLL  maybe).

RTT seems a bit of a mess recently.

You need to search on Marholm Junction https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/detailed/gb-nr:MRHLMJN/2022-01-14/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

and Werrington Junction https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/detailed/gb-nr:WRNGTNJ/2022-01-14/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

to get some idea of which route a service will take.  Even then, because freight does not always run to time, it seems that Peterborough Power Box use their discretion to fit those trains within the spare paths available at any particular time between passenger services.

Railcam is much better as you can physically watch the movements along the ECML, Stamford Lines, Joint Line and in the station area in real time and see which route the next freight will be taking.  This gives you about five minutes warning for a freight going north at Cock Lane or nearer ten minutes at Lincoln Road.  The only drawback is spending too much time looking at the phone screen and plotting where to stand for the next photo or video that you miss something interesting flying by.:scenic::locomotive::wild:

There are a few container trains that go south on the ECML to the Thames ports, plus the bin trains, the Heck to Bow.

In two hours this afternoon on the Joint at Lincoln Road four freights used the dive under (2 north, 2 south) and three on the surface route (1 north, 2 south)

Should be plenty of butterflies then.:good:

The only thing positive is the butterflies and colour, :good: shame it is not just a ground covering plant instead of the out of control species it has been allowed to become around the railway.:nono:
