45125
There's a star valve in the air pipe, it has to be connected to a loco main res pipe when being assisted so the final drive can be locked in neutral, it shouldn't whip about when disconnected The damage caused by the res pipe was because it wasn't secured on the dummy. Air train pipe will when the cock is dropped as the pipe thus to straighten but if the air can't escape it won't Its not the air doing the whipping, it's the length of the pipe when trailing gets whipped about in the slip stream. I have filled numerous Derby lightweight front ends and seen route indicator glasses smashed too.

Rivercider
Some instamatic photos of DMUs in the Cardiff Valleys taken in the late 1970s, which may have been posted before elsewhere. One of Cardiff Cantons small allocation of class 117 sets C454 (51394, 59359?, 51352) approaches Radyr on a mid morning service into Cardiff 10/9/79 Moving north to Pontypridd another DMU heads south Refurbished class 116 set C315 (50855, 59363, 50908) departs Pontypridd towards Cardiff 10/9/79 And a route learning DMU passes Pontypridd Former class 122 single power car set L101 W55001 is now numbered TDB975023 passes Pontypridd heading south, this unit is still with us and has been preserved on the East Lancs Railway, 10/9/79 cheers
Rivercider
While searching for something else (as you do) I found this photo of a DMU just west of Bristol near West Depot it looks to me as though it is one of the 4 car parcels set with two GUVs in the middle, which worked Rail Air parcels traffic https://www.flickr.com/photos/10163027@N05/4180540935/in/photolist-7nqnaZ-6qcpT7-7nqmJK-7nqmD6-7w7mhU-7w7mmS-7w3w12-6q8gh2-6qcq9W-5NZggf-5peERL-5scWJn-7w7mp9-5oX9We-5scU7a-7PqGL5-5scX2k-5scUnV-5shiMJ Is this possibly the set referred to in this other thread? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/17856-western-region-dmus/page-2 cheers
45125
It's actually a vacuum pipe so will not whip around when disconnected. It's the reservoir air pipe, it's the small white one....... Edited October 6, 2016 by 45125
EddieB
Following on from Rivercider's excellent shot of TDB975023 , here's a couple more 'singles'. First, one from my Instamatic days. W55030 (class 121) after arrival at Ealing Broadway in March 1974. Secondly, another photo of TDB975023 (W55001), this time at Westbury in April 1986. I was thinking back to I think DaveF's thread where somewhere there is a photo of an unsecured vac pipe whipping around and a manky front end to boot! Re the two pics from the Cardiff Valleys, I have not yet discovered why those 117s went to Cardiff and were formed with 116 trailers but I'm sure there is a perfectly simple explanation. It is also noteworthy that set C315 is still "correctly" formed, ie as delivered back in 1958. Chris
EddieB
Several of the class 121 singles were converted as sandite units. That was the fate of W55030 (seen in my earlier photo at Ealing Broadway), which became 960013. Here it is, rejoicing in its faded Network South East livery, in the bay at Aylesbury, July 2010. Not the prettiest sight! Edited October 8, 2016 by EddieB

EddieB
Sorry to be pedantic, but isn't that a 121? You're right! I even have it as a class 121 for both the Ealing Broadway and Aylesbury photo entries in my database. I think I must have got muddled up with the Westbury unit during transcription of the first pair of pictures, then carried the error over when I added the Sandite unit photo. Now corrected. Thank you for pointing it out.

jetmorgan
After having a bit of a claer out & tidy up I've been able to get access to my older prints & slides of my train spotting days so I thought I'd get some images scanned and give my four penneth worth of 1st gen DMU images. Not great images I'm afraid as at the time I was cheap camera equipment, usually point & shoot 35mm until I finally had the money to get a basic 2nd hand 35mm SLR. Also several photos were taken at Birmingham New Street which never had much light to be able to photograph anything. 1st up cl104 set L265 53539 & 54491 West Ealing 21/10/92 2nd cl105 53367 Birmingahm New Street 16/9/88 3rd cl108 54197 Bristol Temple Meads 19/7/88
