What a superb mix of coaches in these trains. Mark 1s, early and late Mark 2s and Mark 3s. The 3rd picture is a 'roarer', not an '86'.
cravensdmufan
What a superb mix of coaches in these trains. Mark 1s, early and late Mark 2s and Mark 3s. That's what I liked about the LMR before fixed rake push pull DVT operations. You often got Mk1,2 and 3 carriages in the same train, even on top link express workings! And in the late 80's blue/grey and executive colours mixed in there as well for good measure! Roll on the new 4mm models of Classes 86 and 87 (from as yet unknown manufacturers) as reported on post #364 here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/112642-new-crowdfunded-class-86-or-class-87/page-15 We've waited long enough.... SGJ
87004 Britannia at Euston, I didn`t get to Euston often as being a Leeds lad the Cross was at the London end, although I have been in Padington and Waterloo stations more ( from when I used to work on the railways in the early 90`s with by priv card, I work for the NHS now ). My regular weekends were spent at Crewe, but when bashing I used to normally go to the WCML then something to the south west, then the sleeper from Penzance / Plymouth to Padington then bash the 50`s out of Waterloo ( then later the 47`s and 33`s ) to Clapham jcn, if it was the other way ( Exeter) i normally did the full line to Waterloo back to the 87

jonny777
You're right, the EM1, EM2, ex-NER and Southern Railway electrics in the BR five digit series didn't have an E prefix originally, until sometime around the late 'sixties when it was added to the EM1 fleet (these being by then the only survivors from that group). [Edit] Just to add that I'm guessing that the E prefix was probably added to the EM1s around 1968, at about the time that TOPS classifications were introduced, but before wholesale renumbering into the TOPS scheme was adopted. With the move towards TOPS numbering coming in view, the Woodhead electrics were given an E prefix to their numbers so as to avoid any confusion when the BRC&W Type 2 s would eventually receive new numbers in the 26001 series. The EM2s were given the E prefix as well, and Wikipedia says it was as early as 1957 but I can't vouch for that. Here is E27002 at Sheffield Victoria in the mid-60s, after being repainted in blue livery. Edited to add that the above is a screen shot from Diesel & Electric Archive Files Vol 1. jonny777
Actually, I am beginning to think the Wikipedia entry is incorrect (what a surprise!) because a quick browse through Flickr results in a number of photos showing the loco in lined green but without the E prefix, as seen in this David Christie picture - https://www.flickr.com/photos/david_christie/8366443761/in/gallery-68220805@N07-72157629859146027/
EddieB
Obviously more research needed. According to the RCTS "green book" (10B), the E prefix began to be added to the EM1 and EM2 fleet in 1966. All but two of the EM1s had received the prefix by 1970. As for the EM2s,, all received the prefix with the possible exception of 27001, for which no record existed when that book was compiled. Mike at C&M
I had the pleasure of 87.019 on the Euston - Carlisle Motorail one damp day. The squeal from the wheelslip as "Sir Winston Churchill" tried to find his feet on leaving Oxenholme with 13 on was deafening.
jonny777
Maybe all these AC electric threads should be combined? But until then, and although I have just posted this on the class 85 thread; here it is again. 85025 86221 and possibly 81015 at Euston on 27th February 1983. Not on the 85 thread is this uid 83, after a slight "coming together", at Crewe Works in 1977. Edited October 9, 2016 by jonny777

Rivercider
Here are a couple of my instamatic efforts from the 1970s, one from each end of the West Coast Main Line A saturday evening at Euston sees 86217, 25311, 86243 and 25068 stabled, 17/4/76 On a weekender spotting trip around Scotland this was one place we tipped out bleary eyed to take numbers. South of Glasgow Central are some stabled EMUs. When I posted this on Flickr I was told this is Smithy Lye sidings, 25/3/78 cheers

jetmorgan
After finding my old 35mm while having a bit of a clear out & tidy up I've also got some of my older prints & slides taken in my train spotting days of AC electrics. Not great images I'm afraid as at the time I was cheap camera equipment, usually point & shoot 35mm until I finally had the money to get a basic 2nd hand 35mm SLR. Also several photos were taken at Birmingham New Street which never had much light to be able to photograph anything. Early AC's to begin with...well all 85's as I was too late for anything else 85005 Birmingham New Street 16/9/88 85009 passing Kensal Green 5/11/88, when you could get a good view of the WCML before loads of Buddliea's started growing there 85019 Birmingham New Street 25/10/89 85032 Birmingham New Street 28/12/88
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted October 10, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2016 Parcels and ECS mainly - though when I visited on Saturday daytimes they were usually stabled. They were a regular feature at Euston up until about 1983/4.
