Popular Post Andrew P
A few weeks ago I made my mind up that I wanted to build two Layouts, but with two very different goals. I have a passion for Layouts full of Track, big Goods Yards, Depots and loads of movement, and so Kingsford North Yard and Depot was started. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/120051-kingsford-north-yard-and-depot/ My other love is that of the typical picture postcard bucolic Branch Line, and so this is the story of Trewithen, a typical Cornish GWR (Great Western Railway) BLT. Like Pencarne, Trewithen is set around the Bodmin area, with the main GWR Route going to Bodmin and beyond, whilst the other Route takes the line to Boscarne, Wenfordbridge, Wadebridge and the Withered arm of the LSWR, (London and South Western Railway). As a point of interest, if you Google Trewithen you will get, Trewithen Dairies, Tea Rooms and Guest House, all three are many miles apart from each other, and as far as I can find out have no connection other than in the name. I chose this name because it doesn't have a Village as far as I can see, but when I worked for Arla Foods, (think Cravendale Milk and Anchor Butter) we used to supply Trewithen Dairies, hence the connection for me. The Track. I'm going for the new Peco Code 75 Bull Head Track, laid on a rubber underlay unfortunately I cant wait for the Points and so I've gone for normal Code 75 Points. Control. Some may not approve but I'm using standard DC / Anolog for the Loco control. A couple of reasons for this; firstly it will be run as one Loco in Steam, Secondly I have found that the delicate nature of the smaller Locos makes Body removal and Chip fitting a damaging task. Thirdly, I have no desire to Sound fit the small Tank Locos that will frequent the Line. Point Control The Point Motors will be Gaugemaster / Seep PM1's with the Points modified for Frog polarity switching via the Point Motor, but driven by a Gaugemaster T1 16V AC Transformer and Peco Switches will be used in a Lever Frame. EDIT = I've had to change to Peco due to many PM1 Failures at the fitting stage see Post#172 on Page 7. The Signals. These will be Dapol GWR Lower Quadrant and powered by a 12V Transformer, and again using the Peco Switches in the Lever Frame. Here are a few pics to show the progress so far. Along the centre front of the Layout will be the River which drops along its length, the Line runs on an Embankment from the Terminus for a short while with the Road rising up along the back. The Track divide's with the LSWR Route going to the Tunnel and the GWR Route disappearing under a Road Bridge. Note, in some pics you will see some Code 100 Track, this is because I didn't have enough Bull Head at the time of the Photos. And a couple of my Artist impressions of how I expect it to look. More updates in a couple of Days. Edited July 23, 2021 by Andrew P
aberdare
I shall be keeping an eye on progress Andy from here on. I like the look of the scenic end especially as it has a river section, I do like to see one in a layout as you know. Take your time though or else I won't be able to keep up. RMweb Premium Bogie Posted March 1, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 1, 2017 I see you have included a 3 way point. I seem to recall you saying that you did not have success with them in the past and so you tended to avoid them. Has something changed your mind? I seem to recall you saying that you did not have success with them in the past and so you tended to avoid them. Has something changed your mind? Your right, two things, one is that it's Isometric, and not opposite as the troublesome code 100 was, and the other is that I had no other way of getting the Platform length, with the run around and the Bay in, without going another foot / 300mm down the board. RMweb Premium Ray H Posted March 1, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 1, 2017 Another stunner from the AP school of modelling no doubt. I bet you wish you could get the grass down on the layout as quik as you could in the picture . . . . . . Come to think of it, you probably can, unlike me who still can;t work out what colour grass is! Good luck with it mate.
brianusa
Good to see another Cornish layout, Andy, can't get enough of 'em! Also good old DC; too many go overboard with unnecessary complications when its not really required. Look forward to the finished layout in a few days time! Brian. sp1
Blimey Andy, you've built in two hours what I've been procrastinating about for two years! Looking forward to this one!

Twright
For once I can follow one of your builds without missing the start, good luck with this, looks good so far. One question will there be a run round in the station (I can't see one in the pictures) or is this yet to be added?

Surprised your not going DCC on this layout having just purchased the ACE controller. All the more recent (2000+) small tank locos are much easier to chip these days, some now are even pre wired to add a speaker for sound.Still, you'll save a bit of cash. Nice to see a bit of countryside around the track, just keep saying 'less is more, less is more' and you'll be ok.

RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted March 1, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 1, 2017 Wow!!! I,ve spent two days just fixing one of Dunsters signals (which seemed like a short life time) only to find you have concocted a new layout and knocked up the base boards! Nice to see that they're not of the "Flat Earth" kind BTW. Silly question... If Kingsford is situated on the right side of the shed and now Trewithen is on the left, where are the two fiddle yards going to be? Good luck with this, so far it's looking very promising mate. Regards Shaun.
Andrew P
Hi All, Thanks for all the comments and likes, Tom Yes there is a run around. Ray, It's wired for DCC so all Tracks will be live, so any time I fancy adding a few of my spare Chips I can. Shaun, your query about Fiddle Yards, Trewithen will be around the bend just like Pencarne. Edited March 1, 2017 by Andrew P
woodenhead
So you'll be on the look out for ex LSWR locos then. Glad I snapped up a Maunsell livery Push Pull M7 before you went looking. Is this going to be pre Nationalisation?
Andrew P
So you'll be on the look out for ex LSWR locos then. Glad I snapped up a Maunsell livery Push Pull M7 before you went looking. Is this going to be pre Nationalisation? Hi Woodenhead, I'm looking at Maunsell Green SR Locos, I have one M7 No 42, and a T9, plus the usual GWR Locos including the New 14XX from Hattons / DJM. Then I have a selection of BR early Crest, and then some late Crest including an Ivatt 2MT Tank and the the Class 22's, So just by adding a few Vehicles I can ALMOST get away with any period. The ONLY ones I wont go for are the Mallacite Green Southern Locos, YUCK IMHO, hahhah

I've skipped the 14xx in favour of waiting on a railmotor though what started out as a GW branch with a spot of Southern has now moved right into the latter with a bit of GW. I even succumbed to an SR green EMU which meant I had to move location from Cornwall to nearer the south coast. I've kept away from BR period, too tempting to duplicate and do what I did in N and collect though a 22 would have been nice. Oh and I also utilise single engine in steam principle, so much easier to wire almost like DCC but without the cost of the chips.
