RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted August 30, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 30, 2017 I saw this recently; it needs rather more than a wipe with an oily rag. Coles crane on an AEC chassis. The plate on the crane says 1943 which I presume is year of manufacture. No details of the chassis, but probably the same year. It would have seen better days for sure; IMG_0596.JPG RAF AEC 6x6 Matador with 10t (IIRC) Coles crane. . Its not a Matador, its an 0854 though it is derived from the Matador. MinZaPint
Seen at the Dorset County show It's in the colours of Eldridge Pope whose brewery was in Dorchester, they produced a very quaffable IPA, Royal Oak & Thomas Hardy Ale @ 12.5% the strongest beer in the country, all now gone! The cab sign is in the name of the current owners of this lovely 1947 Austin Dray.

RMweb Premium 45156 Posted September 10, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 10, 2017 Well, you need 12.5% ale if you're going to read any Thomas Hardy . But eeeh lad, it weren't half tasty stuff. I do miss their ales. I had one of the first pints of Royal Oak in Portsmouth when working casual for a beer agency in London.

runs as required
Thanks for the video Phil (post #54) Weird seeing “Das Rollende Hotel”again @ 5.40 and also here obviously still going strong as a tour company The Benz trucks and their trailers used to cross the desert down to the west African coast from Germany every year. They would park up at the University swimming pool in Kumasi overnight, where the poor battery hens travellers could get a brief respite dip in the pool. Our kids used to enjoy trying out those claustrophobic sleeping drawers, but they looked like mosquito ridden hot sticky Hells to me The clientele seemed more elderly retirees than 'Gap Year' school leavers. dh Edited September 10, 2017 by runs as required

allan downes
It would have seen better days for sure; IMG_0596.JPG RAF AEC 6x6 Matador with 10t (IIRC) Coles crane. . Just found this thread and was intriqued by that old AEC Matador. I drove one of these for Wimpey when they were extending the M1 motorway from Crick to Leicester and what a powerful beast it was at that ! If I remember rightly, they were terrible to drive with a crash gear box, no power steering, no heater, ratchet hand brake, wooden cab, hopeless head lights and with a top speed of 29 mph loaded or empty but would climb a wall in crawler gear - or plow headlong right through it instead where, regardless of which it chose to do, there was just no stalling that engine ! But, of course, there has to be a story ! One day we were all driving in convoy into a sand quarry down a one way ramp with a steep sloping side to the offside when my brakes failed. So, to avoid piling into the back of the lorry in front I had no other choice than to swing over and hurl my truck down the bank where I plowed cab first into a large mound of sand at the bottom of the quarry unharmed but quite shook up to say the least. Anyway, the policy for truck drivers at the time was " Hit anything you shouldn't hit and you're fired" and when questioned by the Transport manager - Big Red who hated everyone including himself - as to what had happened he had a mechanic check out the brakes where he found a split diaphragm in the air brake system so I wasn't sacked but that only lasted a week when after missing my turn off and backing up, fully loaded, into a Triumph Herald and completely writing it off ! Then there was tipping clay spoil into the old flooded quarry at Stoney Stanton hooked up to a steel cable where you wasn't allowed to leave your cab and, when that clay sometimes stuck to the steel body, the weight would lift the front of the lorry right up off the ground putting an incredible strain on that anchor cable- and a privilege that was exclusive to night shift drivers only ! runs as required
That must be about one of the last Thornycroft lorries to be made - and with a well proportioned cab.. I seem to remember Thornycrofts were much used by the LNER in pre BR days for local goods deliveries but with ugly railway works constructed van bodies. dh Edited October 29, 2017 by runs as required

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted October 30, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 30, 2017 832J is an ex 1932 STL bus chassis which was rebodied by London Transport in 1950's when the original body was life expired. It now has a 7.7litre diesel engine in replacement for the original petrol one The early STL's together with the 'unfrozen' one's delivered in the early 40's were chosen for such conversions as they had crash gearboxes. The buses fitted with pre-select gearboxes were not suitable for towing.
