I ended up picking up a couple of job lots of MTK kits at auction a couple of weeks back, plus 3 Q kits. The shape of the Q kits Warship body looks suspiciously like the original prototype catalogue images used as for the Lima Warship in 1980...note that the resin body had already been cleaned up and primed as acquired, this one I may be compelled to have a go at finishing.

And I got the impression that the Western catalogue images were the MTK kit, although it was a loooooooong time ago now 😁!

I did one once on a Lima Class 87 chassis (only had the body, no sideframes so modified the 87 frames to......sort of.....reassemble a 74.........anyway, darn thing was so top-heavy it would only go round curves at low speed without toppling over!

I put it up for sale at an exhibition and it was purchased by one of the larger retailers on a pre-opening bargain trawl for £45. Some time later at another show I happened to find myself talking to a chap who turned out to have bought it from the retailer........for £105! He thought it was a bargain - I kept quiet and nodded in agreement.....🤐!!

Actually now I wish I'd kept it as I've since collected two Heljan 33s and two Hornby 73s and wish I had a 74 to go with them. D'oh!

Lucky ebay find this week, lucky in that it was bought in a thirty quid job lot of Dublo coaches in which its photograph did not even appear: an unbuilt MTK Cravens parcels railcar complete with motor bogie! Everything is present and correct and I plan to have a go at it, but the motor bogie is stone dead. Is it worth trying to get it repaired, and if so by whom, and if not can anybody suggest a suitable alternative?

Photos to follow.

PapagolfJuliet - Hornby Cl.110 bogie frames and chassis frames, they were my go-to recommendation for any DMU repowering exercise as they took the standard Hornby 2-axle ringfield power bogie. All 3 of my MTK DMUs had those under it, although I bought them already built so it wasnt my doing

Somewhere Ive got a Triang Met-Cam with a 110 power bogie as well - very easy conversion as both cars in the Triang R157 have a removable flor to fit a power bogie, so you just put a Hornby bogie  and subframe into the Triang floor of each vehicle and run the wire between them. Pretty sure I have a box of unused bogie frames somewhere too...

I'm currently trying to finish my MTK Cravens parcel car using a Black Beetle motor bogie with MTK sideframes. I'm still trying to work out the best way of fixing the floor in the body, sliding one end in after the body has been painted and interior done, then gluing the end on. I've only been 40 years building this!!

Nice find otherwise, it seems to be nicely finished.

What type of motor bogie is it? Is it an MTK one?

I have at last been able to obtain an MTK catalogue, dated January 1977 (inside - the original owner penned April 77 on the cover). As well as listing the 'usual favourites' there are some interesting kits listed - has anyone ever seen the Class 86 or the Class 87? Also listed 'to be introduced' were HST power cars and Mk3 coaches. 1977 was also the year that the very first Hornby HST was introduced which frankly even back then was a far easier route to a 'scale' version so I wonder if they ever appeared in MTK form.

Waiting for bogies to arrive to complete the chassis’s - alas the MTK ones are not really usable.

Cheers

I belive so. Juice is definitely going across it and it is intact, so my suspicion is that in forty-odd years of storage all the electricity elves have escaped from the magnet.

Well they have turned out very well! Bravo!

I didn't know MTK did a 306, but should have guessed Colin would have had a go.

What a great looking model, have you sourced a pantograph? …. Just shows how well MTK kits will scrub up with patience.

I’ve fitted a suitable looking HO pantograph from the spares box.  I will modify the mounting frame to look more like the prototype with new insulators.

So what other goodies are in that catalogue?

I recently picked up a kit for 1500 (the prototype refurbished 4-CEP with sliding windows) that I had no idea MTK had produced.

Here's the 4mm D&E range as of early 1977 (starred items were for future introduction so may not all have appeared)
