Is that an XR4x4?

I'll have a look next time I'm down that way, it's halfway between the foundry I visit & the local café, so it's worth the walk....

Cheers,

Phil.

The 4x4 along with most hatchbacks  had a window where the stripe is going to the roof on  that one, looking at photo's I

can't find any 4 door hatchback with a solid C post .

As seen here .

Isn't it the booted version known as a Sapphire? Neighbour of ours banger raced one many years ago when they were still pretty much current cars, although the engine sounded awful so probably why it was a scrapper. It was at Long Eaton which closed around 1997 I believe so gives an idea how long ago.

Edit: incidentally some of the best action on oval racing is the 2 litre saloon stock cars. They have a Sierra shaped (more or less) bodyshell on a space frame chassis.

Thats a Mk1 above but you’re right thinking about it, both mine 2.8 and 2.9’s had the rear quarter light windows. Are the red cars windows painted over with the starsky and hutch stripe?

I reckon the stripe is over the window,  never seen a Sierra 5dr without them

You are kidding?

Barely enough "boot" for a thin rubber spoiler in that photo, the Sapphire had a good couple of feet of boot similar to its Cortina predecessor like the white one below.

Plus all the Sapphires had a proper grille between the headlamps and a shorter bonnet, not the full-length bonnet almost down to the bumper like that red one.

I hadn't really given this thread much thought but thumbing through one of my (by now very grubby!) Maserati books and perusing Autotrader recently it struck me that the firms fifth iteration  of the Quattroporte falls into the right category, in fact one overseas magazine called it an instant classic from Pinifarina when it was launched in 2003. It's certainly much prettier than the revamped QPVI of 2014 onwards. I'm still hankering after one, preferably a 2007 'pre-facelift' model with the much improved ZF auto'box and (vital) fully documented service history. There are some subtle variations in the front grille and other bits of trim and being quite large they can be colour sensitive cars (unusually for an Italian machine they don't look that great in bright red), but I just love the lines, the unfussy detailing and that Ferrari derived V8 engine... I'm even quite partial to the Gandini designed earlier MkIV version...

I do like the qp4. Especially the early non evo ones. The contrast between sober exterior, bonkers engine and tarts boudoir interior appeals!

As the years roll slowly by the otherwise forgotten '80s and '90s Masers are gaining in popularity, perhaps not as much as other marques but they do have their followers.

Always liked the Biturbo, and we have a 222E in the garage, although it has the later SE bumpers.

222 is effectively a developed Biturbo. A few cosmetic changes, different dashboard, redesigned steering, 5 stud wheels, slightly enlarged engine for the E, fuel injected with inter coolers (although some Biturbo were injected and inter cooled, mostly using a different system)

All the best

Not sure if an E46 is counted as a 'Modern Classic' in the same way that E36's or E39's are, but I picked this 325i M sport Touring up a few months ago.

It's auto, but its a nice daily so i'm not too worried. It was also owned by a BMW dealership employee, so came with a massive folder of preventative maintenance done, the plastic cooling system being the main bugbear in the straight 6 E46's. New Zealand was hardly spoilt for choice when it came to the Touring versions of the E46, the UK had the option for the 330i AWD manual, which would be nice! I love the thing as it is, fun to drive, great on long trips and modern and comfortable enough for me (being relatively young), not to mention insurance is much better on this than my previous car..

Hiya

We had an E46, but a 4 cylinder one.

The plastic bits of the cooling system are a pain. You know it is a common issue for the header tanks to split when the local general motor factors not only keep them in stock, but have a choice of economy or premium versions if them! That the connectors to the radiator are all push fit is a pain. Probably very easy in the production line, but a pain getting the connectors apart and together when nit brand new (I used some silicone spray on the o rings so they went together a bit easier).

On the 4s the coil packs fail. Electric window switches fail. Earths to the tail lights burn out. All cheap enough to replace.

All the best

Just getting my other modern classic, the Nissan Murano MOTd (well I’ll see if I still call it a classic in about an hour after it’s MOT), the place I use has had these in his yard for years wasting away, although the maestro has migrated to the back of a transporter ready to be taken away for restoration, apparently it was originally white but it’s going to be restored into the same colour blue

One of my nephews had one. . . his first car after passing his test at 17 and 3 mths.

I took him up to the sales to spend his money and steered him away from  XR3, XR2,  Gti and the likes, only for him to bid on it when I went to the gents..

It was 5 years old and cost him £995 . . . . Insurance was  . . . . . £1785.. but his real trouble was, he was 5'6", had a shave once a month, whether he needed it or not, and looked about  12.

He was getting stopped 2/3 times per week until the local Traffic bobbies got used to him.

very strong engine....VW back axle, honda(?) gearbox....

Which one? 1.3, 1.6R, 1.6S or 2.0L (petrol or diesel!)! ;)

I don't think any of them had VW axles, you may be getting confused with the gearbox. Some had VW 'boxes, some Honda and some AR dependant on the model. I had a B reg 1.3HL with a VW 5 speed box and it was a really good car, I shouldn't have got rid of it really!

It was the MG 2 litre....I believe the rear axles were borrowed off VW Golfs? Certainly the specialists I got it off used to use VW Golf axle parts...[they used them as rally machines & stuff]
