I think there are three sheds in the garden. Aditi says there are two and a summerhouse. They are all under her control. To be fair she does apply the preservative stuff herself but has been happy to let me repair the roofs when necessary.

Bidding for 3 sheds

Three sheds, a summerhouse (still flatpacked) and  a greenhouse so far.

I do keep wondering about getting another shed, although the sensible option would be to cull thin down my collection of surplus equipment and stocks.

Not so long ago I did see an interesting comment by a gentleman who had a slight dig at a youtuber who had built a strorage system for his vast collection of nuts, bolts, washers and screws:

'I'm now xx years old, and when I have a project, I buy in enough to finish the project and have very little left over. It saves me having to store stuff I may never use again.'

He did have a very valid point.

So inspired, I can feel another cull coming long:  Of course another shed would be really useful as I could then have somewhere to store all this stuff out prior to it's disposal.

I have three sheds. One is a brick edifice attached to the house which I emptied in preparation for lining out. The contents were placed on racking in the utility room in preparation for the work to be done however it seems to have filled up with more stuff. The shed at the bottom of the garden is almost falling down, its as rotten as a pear. I'm gradually clearing it, anything useful will be stored in the garage. The third shed nearer to the house is only 3' by 6' and is used for garden tools is rapidly filling up. I do have the aforementioned garage and a spare bedroom which is used for modelling, if I can find room.

That sounds like an ideal set up and what a good idea to have a 'physical' boundary between you and Jill's half- bit like the Berlin Wall. I hope you have a Checkpoint Charlie with rigid demarcation rules. Wouldn't want her straying across the border and causing an international incident would we.

Dave:  "Where are my Vallorbe Needle Files gone?  And my new set of finest Jeweller's screwdrivers??

Jill:  "It's ok, they're over here.  I needed something to open my tins of paint last week (that'll be the screwdrivers....) and something a bit longer to stir it with (that'll be the files....).  I forgot to clean the paint off (that'll be oil-based) but I'm sure you be able to clean them - won't you?

Pah, not just Jill!  Mrs NHN does a fair line on that too.  Looked for my extra long screwdriver for years - turned up in the gurl shed, used for paint tins....turdypah!

My problem  whilst still living at my parents was my Humbrol white paint and finest paint brush being borrowed by dad and brother to mark a flywheel so that car engine timing could be adjusted.

Got through lots of brushes when I was younger and had slightly grey and lumpy white paint

I hope you haven't found chisels being used to open paint tins.  I did once try to suggest that piano wire shpuld not be cut with the jaws of my cutters and the hole near the pivot was better.  That suggestipn did not go down well.  Apparently her art teacher knew far mkre than me.

Shed 2 has no room to expand, squeezed in between fence and shrubbery ( she'd miss the shrubbery, it hides the shed)

Shed 1 could be made longer, but not wider, and wider is the deficient dimension

Hence the bid for number 3.

Needs to be a stealth shed though.

Can you get them in real tree?

The chisels are in a box hiiiigh up in my lair, but the snips are all wrecked.  Garden wire....bought her a set of her own, prefers mine.  I have an old Snap-On set, they are the only ones not to be damaged as Mrs NHN is aware of how much they cost!

A couple of days ago, Alison, house-minding while I play Leclerc on stage in Torquay, casually advised me that my garden was under water. As Sarthe is in drought conditions, but hoping for rain, I assumed the flood was welcome rainwater unable to be absorbed by the parched soil. Not so. I had had a burst watermain under my lawn! Evidently the drying out of the ground has wrought several such fractures.

The water people were ecstatic when she rang them - they had no idea why water pressure had dropped locally! A digger has destroyed part of my lawn, but hey, it will recover in time. I just hope I don't get a large bill! The leak was 'their' side of the water meter, so I have hopes....

Hm why stir with a file? I use coffee stirrers saved when I get a coffee out, such a brilliant resource. Have been known to help myself to a few extras for such a purpose.

Expecting the in laws on about an hour to meet up with house guests who leave today, but are currently in the city centre.

In view of this meet up, Mrs SM42 has bought cakes.

These have cut up ready and inevitably there were some odd bits left over that didn't make it through visual QC.

Mrs SM42 has therefore called in a local specialist to dispose of this waste product.

And I don't even charge

Yesterday I ran my Swiss n gauge layout and have at last solved a mystery problem which started some years ago while I was looking after Mum and didn't have time to investigate.

One point in the hidden sidings was sticking, it would usually throw in one direction but only sometimes in the other.  The odd time I got a chance to play trains I just changed it my hand.  I had assumed that there was a problem with the point motor (Peco) or the point (Peco).  As it is in the hidden sidings I had made a hole in the baseboard and attached the solenoid directly to the point.  I thought it was going to be a tracklifting and replacement job.

Then I thought I should look at the switch - a standard momentary contact type with two poles, the connections to it are soldered.  When I managed to get into a position where I could see the wires I found a spark when I tried to change the point.  Then I got a torch and looked closely, the return wire was not actually soldered any more, it was just resting on the terminal.  Ten minutes later I had resoldered it, all now works well.

Why hadn't I checked it before?

Probably a good thing that Alison rang them, rather than you phoning in character as Leclerc, or getting Officer Crabtree to ring for you.

You know that, we know that....

But Swmbo's?  Tricky.

As for extras, well a certain Bear's House Of Fun used to supply such things - along with Tea Bags, Paper Cups etc. etc.

I'll say no more 😉

The Q, ,

7, sheds and a double garage.. Depending on how you count them.

1,  two tin garages currently in an L shape to house the boat and workshop.. In the process of being converted into a square, to house N gauge railway and SWMBO's Big full size loom.

2, gardening shed currently it's got a large part of the N gauge railway in it as well

3, wood shed / bike shed lean to onto the garage,

4, garden hand tool shed you can stand up in it but mostly you stand out side and reach in side, will be repurposed when more room becomes available in the garden shed.

5, the EM gauge model railway shed / Art room, with "dirty shed" bolted on the back, spray painting , glass grinding etc in there. Art area is in the middle of the loop round at one end, with art book storage above and below..

6, the home brew / pub shed.

7 a storage shed we inherited from SWMBO's brother..

The double garage, half of which is in the process of being converted into a wood/ boat / metal workshop to replace the area lost in making the N gauge and loom shed..

SWMBO does not venture into the garage workshop, too many nasty bits of machinery like the lathe and pillar drill.. So you can guess where the good chisels screwdrivers etc are held...

It doesn’t pay to make the garage where I have a couple of workbenches and my trains and slot cars too tidy . If I do so, Aditi will soon follow up after commenting how tidy it is, with suggestions for putting some of the special offer household supplies she has bulk bought out there rather than clutter up the utility room.

Over the years I have bought lots of Swann Morton brass modelling knife handles but could only ever find one, or on rare occasions two, of them. When I used to operate layouts at exhibitions I assumed that either I had been careless and lost them or that some light fingered person had appropriated them. Since covid, though, the situation hasn’t changed and I’ve just assumed that old age and forgetfulness must be to blame.

HOWEVER...

In the last few weeks I have been sorting out Dad’s stuff and lo and behold have found no fewer than four of my missing knife handles. Then two days ago when Jill and I were sorting out our shed I happened to mention this and she said, “Oh, I’ve just found some of those that I must have borrowed.”

I now have eight Swann Morton brass modelling knife handles.

Or, even worse, converting the garage into another room - such as a gym or home cinema.  FFS.  Jeez, what a waste.

That'd be grounds for divorce in Bearland - though I'd have to be married first....

The worst thing about my shed is that Jill regards it as the ideal place to dry washing in when the weather is bad. As far as the washing is concerned this is correct but as far as my steel railed track is concerned it isn’t (unless I change to battery operated R/C locos when rusty rails wouldn’t be a problem). Hence I have bought a large dehumidifier to use whenever the place is festooned with wet laundry. Does that work? Yes, but only when it doesn’t get switched off because it ‘gets too noisy’.

In Yorkshire, the inability of the new wife to make decent Yorkshire Puddings was allegedly recognised as reasonable grounds for divorce.
