Aside from SG, what gauge are we looking at, and why? It doesnt look as big as 7ft. Is it a crane gauge, or for bouy wagons, or something?

Maybe for a crane? Looks very modellable anyway, if one can do fancy trackwork.

It mentions a crane in the caption but how did a big crane fit in the tunnel

Just been looking at pictures of  Didcots dual gauge track and it looks very similar

Yes, crane tracks. "Plymouth's Hidden Railways" states that broad gauge steam cranes were used for loading/unloading ships, with new track being laid as late as 1961. I can't see any crane track on the left hand line, presumably the cranes would only go up to where the loco is to change lines.

Interestingly that tunnel was actually a dead end acting as a headshunt.

The area is very 'modelogenic' with sharp curves and complex tracks. The tracks to the right lead to the Cattewater branch.

Amazingly there was still bagged clay traffic in long wheelbase VGA vans as late as 1991.

Slightly worried by that second image- welding supplies by a gasometer!

Agreed the whole Cattewater branch had a lot of modelable locations, including the old quarry which became an oil terminal with a rock tunnel perfect for a scenic break.

I'm pretty certain those were tanks for some type of petroleum product, rather than gasholders..

Indeed, in fact there's some much better pictures of the dual gauge track in this post...

Judging by those empty vans those enthusiasts have got through a lot of chocolate!

Yeah, I hadn't noticed until you pointed it out, but there is something odd going on in that picture.

Possibly someone has tried to bring up the shadow/dark detail from the RH bogie, and not bothered the other end?
