Moderators Popular Post AY Mod Posted September 10, 2021 Moderators Popular Post Share Posted September 10, 2021 Going underground! 1938 stock in N! Revolution Trains is delighted to introduce the first RTR underground trains available in N gauge with our forthcoming model of the iconic and distinctive 1938 stock. 483 on Ryde Pier Head in 2020 Over 1100 cars of 1938 stock were built with additional cars built/converted during the 1950s to supplement the original batch. The 1938 stock was primarily designed for “deep” tube lines on the Bakerloo, Northern, Piccadilly and Central lines though 1938 stock was also used on the East London sub-surface line during the 1970s. Despite being deep tube stock the 1938 stock regularly ran above ground particularly at the northern ends of the Northern and Bakerloo lines alongside sub-surface and mainline stock. The final 1938 stock was withdrawn from service by London Underground in 1988 following 50 years of service with a 4 car set preserved by London Underground. Despite the long service on LU lines in 1988, 10 pairs of 1938 stock were sold to BR for future use on the Isle of Wight. This saw the 1938 stock slightly modified for use on the IoW where they saw a remarkable further 30+ years of service with the final sets withdrawn in January 2021. Several sets have been preserved and we hope to support the preservation efforts with sales of our models. We plan to offer sets in original LT red, Network SouthEast and Island liveries. Our model is undergoing final CAD corrections and once those are complete we will open the order book (expected to be late Q4 2021). Our model will feature highly detailed bodyshells, separate flush-glazing, moulded interiors with working head, tail and saloon lighting. Revolution Trains would like to thank South Western Railway and TfL for their assistance and support. 27

Padishar Creel
Interesting choice, probably will indulge if a full Bakerloo line set is offered. In another life I commuted on them es grüßt pc
97403_Ixion
I remember seeing an underground train at Oxford Model Railway Exhibition back in the 1970's! I felt it was probably N-gauge as despite me being small, it looked small to me and I could see it from the side wall of the layout I always wanted to see an N-gauge one, so this is a real positive surprise! Well done Revolution Trains! I especially like the IOW interest in them... definitely one to order
RMweb Gold Adam1701D Posted September 11, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 11, 2021 Splendid news! I am always happy to hang up my vinyl equivalent when something RTR comes along :-) That low profile tube chassis has a lot of potential for other types....hint hint.
RMweb Premium RichardT Posted September 11, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 11, 2021 (edited) Revolution goes pre-war! Welcome to the dark side… ”These don’t fit with my chosen place and time…these don’t fit with my chosen place and time…must keep repeating this…must keep repeating this…” EDIT: Posted the above before I saw the Pullmans announcement. My cup runneth over!! RT Edited September 11, 2021 by RichardT Realising that they are also doing Pullmans!
RMweb Premium CF MRC Posted September 11, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 11, 2021 Could be useful on a layout I’m involved with, assuming they can be converted to fine scale. Tim
Brian-1c
That's a real surprise and very welcome. Another much needed EMU to go on the Southern end of the West Coast Main Line, as well as nearly of London and suburbs. They will go well with a 501 and a 310, won't they ? Ah, we still have to see if they ever materialise, don't we ? They will sit well with the 313 though. I will definitely be in the order queue for this one. 4 car sets ? 3 car supplementary sets ? Even full 7 car sets ? I look forward to more details.

wombatofludham
What an interesting announcement. Even though I don't model the junior scale, I'm fascinated just how they will achieve the motorisation. Well done Revolution for breaking new ground.
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted September 11, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 11, 2021 How many cars per set and, most importantly, how much? Separate motorised chassis would be good too if they could be made available. Currently modelling N scale Underground involves a faff in finding obscure TomyTec et-al motorised chassis from odd corners of the globe.
RMweb Premium Kris Posted September 11, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 11, 2021 Here is a livery to try. Also shows that you can find these units anywhere.
Brian-1c
I really hope the experimental driving car 10306 is produced as one of the variants. It spent most of its life on the Northern line, but Andy Armitage did say he saw it rostered for the Bakerloo line once. I want one, as I travelled in it regularly at the time , on the Northern. Pricing and set format to be finalised over the next couple of weeks but likely 2 car IoW sets, 4 car preserved set and 4+3 sets for original tube use. We’ve no plans to sell chassis separately. Roy L S
Brilliant choice, there is nothing like the London Underground network and this is bound to inspire some great choices of layout, even something like Epping-Ongar possibly? RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted September 12, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 12, 2021 Ooh I could add an underground level to my tram layout! Just add a underground sign and stairs to the street. 1 1
johnlambert
I'm not sure what layout I'd build with it, but this is something that definitely has the magic "want one" factor. I can't promise that will translate into an actual order, but you've definitely tempted me.
Karhedron
I have a crazy idea to do an alternative version of East Finchley in the late 70s but imagining the line to Finsbury Park never closed. Instead it remained part of BR and was electrified in 1977 along with the line to Moorgate. Then you could have 313s in BG livery running on the centre lines while the 38 stock runs on the outer lines. I imagine some of the 313s would turn back using the siding just north of the station while others might run on the Edgeware via Mill Hill (which also would not have closed ). I could even add a bit of frieght in the form of milk traffic. There was a rail-served Unigate dairy with its own siding on the Up line. The real thing closed in the early 60s when the line to Finsbury Park was severed but if the link had remained open it could have still been receiving milk in the late 70s as Unigate did not stop milk trains until 1980.

TomJ
If people are looking for another excuse to buy one then the IoW units were tested on the mainline before heading over the Solent. Apparently the first unit was tested between Basingstoke and Eastleigh. I’m sure I remember on a trip to the IoW seeing the ‘new’ trains in sidings near Portsmouth. This thread has pictures of them at Haslemere. It wouldn’t take much imagination to see them running in on other NSE lines!
RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted September 13, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2021 (edited) Hi all, Thanks for posting these images - fascinating. I’ve seen lots of shots of newer TfL trains being dragged from Derby to London, but there seems to be very little information about earlier LT stock. The 1938 stock trains were built in Birmingham, so must’ve been ferried to London somehow...presumably by the LMS. cheers Ben A. jamespetts
Sadly unembeddable, but there is also this photograph of 33008 hauling a 1938 stock train (with match wagon between locomotive and train and brake van at the end) from West Ruislip to Eastleigh ready for rebuilding into class 483s for the Isle of Wight.

I suppose they might have been moved at night as it was quieter, or it may be just of little interest to the few photographers out there. My comment above about adding a hidden layer to the tram layout was only partially in jest. I did think building it so it partially sat beneath and appears in an ‘urban canyon’ might be one idea or a friend has been 3D printing an urban N gauge modular mini layout and that would rather suit these too. Ultimate book case or shelf layout with a 2 inch deep floating shelf layout with the books on top?
