With such a significant anniversary, we have decided to mark the event by releasing two Accurascale Exclusive models which bookend the class; 66001 and 66779.

66001

There were a few subtle differences between the first two and the rest of the production batch which have never been replicated before on a model. Firstly the lashing eyes to secure the locomotive to the ship were in a different position to later models. The horn grille was also mounted almost flush with the body. Visually 66001 looked more striking owing to its red grilles which were later changed to black. Our model will represent 66001 with the original red grilles.

Drawing the production line to a close after 18 years and many hundreds of locomotives was 66779. This locomotive was specially finished in British Railways lined green it was to be named “Evening Star”. The loco also carried commemorative bells above the cab windows and a plaque denoting its significance in the Class 66 story.

Interesting comment about the colour of the grills on 66001. They were very clearly black when displayed at Toton in the following 30/08/98; so a very short lived period of a few months of them being black https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/p486955976/e4c29221e   There must be hundreds of similar photos!

Nice to see that the green on the model 66779 appears to be very dark. Well done. I certainly didn't recognise what it was supposed to be the time I photographed it, https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/belmondgbrf66/e9db4f378

I'm old enough to remember BR steam loco green on subjects such as the Woodhead electrics and it was a much nicer bright colour with a rich depth to it - especially when on WR steam locos overhauled at Swindon (I'm not sure Eastleigh did it on the Bulleids so well and I saw them more often). Very elusive and I am aware size, light and lining alter the colour perception.

Has 66779 been on the WHL? I presume not as I don't think it's RETB equipped.

Even so it'll be hard to resist as a rule 1! It's a shame the late crest faded so quickly. I hope that it gets reapplied at some point with a more robust version to be closer to the as built rendition.

There's a small irony in grabbing a 66779 to upgrade from my Bachmann model, as it might be the first time I've upgraded without ever physically having the prior model-my other one is still in the UK with a mate!

And just when I was thinking the other week "I'm glad they didn't announce 779"...

grills were still red in 1999, I think from some angles the grill can appear to be black thanks to the darkness of the black radiator behind maybe coupled with the grills getting dirty?

Eg this from Newport in feb 99

Looking further the photos of 001 at the Old Oak open day in 2000 again show the red grills off particularly clearly next to the black ones on the loco next to it

The grills were still 'red' way beyond that too, even when it received the wing mirrors. Looking at numerous pictures the grill frames are still clearly red but the grills themselves often look black with dirt! Did it ever actually lose the red grills whilst in EWS livery?

As this is a later Muncie built Class 66 our model will feature accurate detailing such as recess in cab fronts, different vents, large sandboxes and of course, the distinctive bell on the cab front as featured on the real 66779.

From the newsletter version though . .

Is the countdown still showing for a further announcement in (almost) two days time, or was it for todays exclusive 66s.. 🤔

The photo behind is of a 37, but thought that was all of these for now so that’s intriguing.. 😊

I was under the impression this new upfront payment had been dropped ? I’ve ordered, and paid but it does put me off having to pay a sum in advance even if it is a small sum.

The Class 66's have all taken a small deposit (Just £25). We offered no money down on the new J69 and New run of Class 37s however and that will be the norm for 'new' runs.

I’ve paid the initial £25 for my order of 001, can I ask why though has the company gone down this route ?

Not taking a small deposit is the change, which as I said, applies to 'new' runs. As these two exclusives are part of the original run 1 of our Class 66, it would be unfair to those who ordered the other batch members and paid the same £25 deposit.

You can of course cancel at any time for a refund.

As others have said, the grills were definitely red but for the avoidance of any doubt... here's another view from the same event. (My photo.)

I lost £90 over three locos (37, and two 92) when my circumstances changed last year hence why I’m a little uneasy regards any initial payments I don’t understand why it is / was required ? Although I understand what you’ve said it’s been dropped now, which is a welcomed move.
