We only bought one recently as it had photos of two of the grandchildren in their school Nativity play. There wasn't as much in it about Whitby and the surrounding villages as their used to be. A lot about Scarborough though. Covering a much wider area/ adjacent towns seems to be the way 'local' papers have gone.

And not so much advertising. Presumably that's all internet based now and has reduced that revenue stream . . . .

Used to get a copy every week.

Run out of Whitby Gazette so moved on the the old East Cleveland free paper that stopped printing 18 months ago.

It's this sort of attention to detail that gives a layout a strong sense of place.

Not sure what paper they would get in Bilsdale, Evening Gazette from the Boro every night but either Darlington & Stockton Times or Malton Gazette & Herald...

That last edition of the East Cleveland paper, in pristine condition, will be a collectors item before you know it.

You did what with it . . . . . . ????

Possibly The Northern Echo. Lack of free newspapers mean I have to beg or rummage in people's blue bins to get enough to light the fire, can't afford to use them for modelling nowadays.

Quite. For truly authentic historical modelling, one should be making the archivists weep by using newspaper not only of the place but also of the period modelled.

A vote for Bothams from here too. Always a stop when up home and either visiting Whitby or other shops that sell their stuff.

Bothams are Mrs FP and my favourite. Currently forced to go in there and sit on the sofas on a Friday morning due to a series of appointments in town. It's tough, but someone's got to do it. . . .

The front of the layout is now fully covered.

Can't be the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette, then, if there's anything like adequate coverage of anything....

As a resident of the village - we locals call it Chop Gate - this project holds a lot of interest. I did begin my own version in OO a few years ago but life overtook and only the baseboard frames are built. My version was to be a terminus, based on the presumption the company ran out of money due to the expensive construction of the southern tunnel under Newgate Bank or they simply lost interest when no iron ore was found in either Bilsdale or Raisdale (or mainly due to lack of space for a through station).

It seems the landowners (Church or Lord of the Manor) refused to allow the line along the River Rye past the remains of Rievaulx Abbey. Anyway readers may be interested in the proposed route plan (below) which I've extracted from an article on the Bilsdale website.

On 17th November, 1874 a notice was placed in the London Gazette indicating a Company's intention to make an application to Parliament for premission to build a new railway from Ingleby Greenhow to Helmsley.  This would pass through Bilsdale before entering a tunnel near Newgate bank.  Extracts from the plans are set out below.

The proposed route branched off the Battersby to Picton line somewhere between Ingleby station and Stokesley. It would have tunnelled under Clay Bank emerging into Bilsdale before crossing the B1257 and the lane up to Urra with the station just south of Seave Green.

It would then follow the hillside down the east side of the River Seph and B1257 until reaching Lavrock Hall farm then curve left and tunnel under the moor just before Newgate Bank into Carlton parish and south into Helmsley.
