RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted March 11, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) Fair Meadow - Peterborough? Ummmm, not sure about that one......... Have to say I rather like the new shot from the 'dock'. Makes a change for G to be 'in the dock' (of the bay). I also rather like the vans sitting in the background and that S box really does 'fit' beyond that bridge; lovely. Stewart Thanks Stuart, and others who pointed out that pylons have been around for a long time. A spectacular senior moment even by my standards, particularly when that monstrosity of a power station was no more than a half mile down the line. Did the photographer with the permit help with the re-railing exercise? I said you were a sharp eyed lot, didn't I? There is a mystery here though. It is definitely off the road, and the angle of the pony truck suggests that it could not rerail itself without human intervention. However, as you can see I didn't notice when I took the photo, and thereafter I drove the train to the point where I took the next shot, by which time all is well again. I have no recollection at all of having put it back on track before driving the train onward though. I suppose yet another senior moment can't be ruled out though.

bigwordsmith
In the middle of a major sort out of old paperwork I've just come across a Daily Telegraph supplement celebrating 50 years of Mallard's run - among the interesting pics was this, which I thought you'd all find interesting if only because it's such an unusual shot Now Gilbert, I bet even Graeme King hasn't thought about reproducing that :-) Edited March 11, 2014 by bigwordsmith

RMweb Premium Richard E Posted March 11, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2014 Actually it is Pleasure Fair Meadow in Peterborough, so named because it was the traditional stopping place for the pleasure fair, being a meadow by the river and, of course, the railway in those days. The travelling fair has now moved to the Embankment in Peterborough but the car park remains for now - apparently there are plans to develop the area for housing ... Head west out of Peterborough East, under the road Bridge. Fair Meadow is the present car park site on the left, bordered on the east by the road bridge, on the west by the ECML, on the north by the line from Pb East. Acros the tracks on the north side is the present substation(?) area, lots of pylons still going in there. Stewart

Markeg
RE: the newspaper photo of 4468 Mallard in 1985. There is video footage of the 'naked' Mallard on 'Mallard' by John Hunter. jwealleans
the angle of the pony truck suggests that it could not rerail itself without human intervention. Can I hypothesise that in the finest tradition of flash operators, you drove it steadily towards a trailing point where the converging rails brought the wheels back into line and flicked them back onto the track? I can't visualise your track plan to know whether that's the case or not.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted March 18, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 18, 2014 I'm under orders from my Chiropractor to take it easy this week, so going down to the Driving Range and walloping poor helpless golf balls has to be curtailed, which means I have time to run some trains, and even to take some photos. I have left most of these exactly as they came out, as I didn't consider the background clutter to be too distracting, but in view of the continuing controversy about photoshopping of images I'd appreciate your views. We start with the 5.35pm KX- Newcastle, a Grantham duty. This is an attempt at another new vantage point, and brings the ****** bookcases back into play, though they are fairly well bleached out by the strong light. I didn't fancy trying to shop that lot, and my opinion is that attention will be on the loco, so the clutter doesn't intrude. Do you agree though? Same with this one, little non railway stuff to be seen. As usual though the use of zoom causes one or two strange effects. I like A3 close ups. The Newcastle was followed by the 5.00pm from KX, a job for a local A2, though I'm sure this five coach load was not what Mr Thompson had in mind when he designed the class. Why is the loco so clean? Just out of works after a general. Nearly the end of a far from taxing duty for the A2, as it passes an arrival from Kings Lynn behind the usual Ivatt 4. I felt a sky was needed here, as there were a number of distracting vertical lines, and the light had created halos around the roofs which looked peculiar. You don't see things like that when looking at the layout, so I take the view that there is nothing wrong in editing them out, as they are a creation of the camera. And the A2 now at rest also. This one proved impossible to photoshop! Finally, a decrepit local B1 which has staggered down Stoke Bank with a local from Grantham. It too will go no further. This one had to have a sky added, and I reckon it does account for the very strong light. And I carefully straightened that signal before I took the photo.
