Moley48
Hi, Roads under stations? Does anything like that exist in the UK? We are to keep three large platforms (I'm under strict orders!) which means one of the roads that use to pass under a girder bridge will now go slap bang underneath platform 5/6. I'm looking to keep our scenery as believable as possible but I think this might be a stretch too far. Cheers David
Derekl
Not exactly unknown - near me, Leylands Road passes under Wivelsfield station platforms, although the building is at the roadside. 1
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted March 26 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 26 Not sure if you're wanting a rural or an urban location particularly, but try Leeds in West Yorkshire. Google maps reference below. Leeds Station and Neville Street 1
RMweb Premium njee20 Posted March 26 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 26 (edited) Rugby: https://maps.app.goo.gl/AoX5LcvbVFih2MTo7 The new building is off to the left, but the old station building is the red brick one atop the platforms that can just be seen. Sure there are plenty of other examples. Edited March 26 by njee20 fixing link 1
Moley48
These are excellent suggestions. Will definitely help! There are some new ideas to be taken from rugby and Leeds that is for sure. Thanks alot!
RMweb Premium Rich_F Posted March 26 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 26 (edited) Coulsdon Town? Albeit modern the A23 goes under the station directly. Dug out & built in 2006/7. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.3225078,-0.1363521,17z?entry=ttu Redhill? A25 road comes down the hill & under 3 platforms + sidings & through tracks. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.2400376,-0.1662937,3a,75y,103.24h,92.94t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1swq1MWf9arYrML9ah2QSTjA!2e0!5s20230401T000000!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1?entry=ttu Edited March 26 by Rich_F 1

keysan
Does Wigan NW or Warrington BQ count? I have revisited my post to answer one part of my question. Forget wigan. However, i am sure there is a road bridge under BQ. Edited March 26 by keysan update and add

auldreekie
Portobello, near Edinburgh on the NBR/ECML. Island platform between Down and Up tracks of ECML Goods marshalling yard directly across Up track. As I recollect (1950s) traffic lights on the road bridge (almost a short tunnel) beneath. I don't think it was a girder bridge - arch more likely, given the narrowness of the road beneath auldreekie

RMweb Premium keefer Posted March 26 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 26 As mentioned, Glasgow Central has Clyde Street going under the station throat area (not really any platforms there though). However there is also Midland Street which goes under the end-of-the-platforms area. Looking west, from Jamaica St. to Oswald St. And famously, 'The Hielandman's Umbrella, where Argyle St. goes under many of the platforms. Each side of the street has small shops. 4

RMweb Gold Bucoops Posted March 26 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 26 Chelmsford already mentioned has a road going underneath, another one nearby is Shenfield which is a bit more involved.
PaulG
13 hours ago, Bucoops said: Chelmsford already mentioned has a road going underneath, another one nearby is Shenfield which is a bit more involved. Chelmsford Station was originally built with a single island platform. The access to the platform was within the bridge brick arch and for many years you could see the access outline. The timber station building was sold and transported to become a private house when the station was rebuilt with two platforms.
