Evening all,

 

running very late today because other folk herself seemed to want to us ethe 'puter when I might have been visiting eaerlier.  Hope things when well for Tonyy today and that recovery will go well.

 

I was duly sent off to an appointment at the chirpractor this afyernon - foortunatelu y in the Good Doctor's car because of the weather -only to find that I was 24 hours too early for my appointment.  It seems that contrary to what I was told when making the appointment that 29 October this year is not on a Wednesday.  Maybe I should have queried that at the time but I don't keep a calendar.

 

Interestinto read that somewhere actually has peiople cleaning the streets - ours is done about 3 or 4 times a year bya. sweeping machine which completely fails to deal with the verdant growth in the gutters.  Leaves are never swept but just let to rot and form skating rinks where you least expect.  Very different from what i remember as a lad when the council had a couple of blokes going round the town all the time; now its contractors attending occasionally instead of someone there every day with a broom and shovel although at least the numerous litter bins etc are emptied fairly regularly.  So definitely plenty of scope here to get the unemployed earning their dole money using a stiff broom and shovel without hurting anybody's employment.  And the lads in the parks dept would no doubt welcome some help as the Gardening Buddies (a group of gardening lady volunteers including Mrs Stationmaster) have not been at all active this year for various reasons so some of the towns bits of public flower bed etc areas are in need of attention.

 

As for the Govt acting on Covid I expect they're still arguing among themselves and with any one else who does Burnham and decides to argue with them  I have a very strong impression that things would be a lot better if ordinary people actually paid some attention to the very simple rules to limit the spread of infection instead of either totally ignoring them or regarding something as simple as social distancing as some sort of veiled attack on personal liberty (or maybe there are just lots of folk after Darwin Awards?).

 

The foc x seems to have made our porch a regular night time spot but some quadruped managed to poop there this afternoon so the doormat is now in the dustbin which might pout him off (even if he was the one who dumped).  Maybe we'll find out in the morning?

Evening All,

Not much else to say today other than I’ve sorted four insurance policies out over the last couple of weeks. Two of them said they would look at reducing the premiums before I even asked. Both quotes for next year were lower than the current ones and as I said were reduced further without any persuasion. But it does make you wonder how much lower they would go but one policy reduced from £400 to £300 for this year so still happy. Always shop around or at least don’t accept their first renewal quote.

Anyway, I hope everyone whose has been to or is in hospital have had a successful time of it.

To be frank things not looking good for Mils husband. I’ve not mentioned him much recently but he’s been in residential care for the last couple of months as Mil has not been able to cope with husbands dementia. He fell  about a week ago and was taken to one of the large Sheffield hospitals where they found he was suffering from pneumonia. We have been informed he’s now contracted Covid-19 so at 83years with long-standing respiratory and cardiac issues I think he’s got a fight on.

To reply to stationmaster the sweeper will probably have nylon brushes they will not pull weeds out unless they are dead. We used to spray weeds using roundup and a sticking agent using a sprayer mounted on quad bikes. Perhaps the legal actions in America a couple of years ago has altered what is used.

For the first time, I watched our 3 year old grandson play organised soccer (UK - football) this morning. Just 'training', but he seems to be getting the hang of it and - more importantly - enjoying himself. He does have some family background. Two of his great-great-grandfathers played at a reasonable level - one Scottish League, one English League, and a great-grandfather played Scottish Junior. One of his grandfathers (me) is still playing 'recreationally' - or was till Covid appeared, and is hoping to get back to it sometime soon. His other grandfather stopped a couple of years ago, about the time he started drawing his pension. And his dad is very good and still playing approaching his forties.  It's the sport played most by kids here in British Columbia - all year round, at least here in the Lower Mainland (unlike baseball), cheap (unlike hockey and Canadian football), with games at sensible times of the day (unlike hockey) and pretty controlled (unlike lacrosse - a great, fast game to watch, but vicious at the higher levels).

Had a bit of a carp day.

 

One of my regular exhibition team's Mum had a heart attack in the local town centre and could not be revived.

 

A couple of weeks ago, both him and his Dad had a "playing trains" night with my layout instead of a club night (of which we are all members) before the Tier3 kicked in.

Sandra was a regular and enthusiastic always smiling helper at our annual club show.

Good evening everyone 

 

When jobs were being discussed this morning, I forgot to mention that before I started working in the butchers I used to do a couple of paper rounds, one before school and one after school. The morning one started at 7 o’clock so I’ve always been able to get up early when I needed to, I still can when I have to, but since I retired I tend to get up a little bit later now. 

 

My visit to ‘The Christie’ this morning went swiftly and without a hitch. I forgot it was half term this week and I ended up in the car park just before 9:30, almost an hour before my appointment. So I decided to take the long way round to the entrance to kill a bit of time. When I got there there was a small queue, but it was moving quickly, my appointment was at 19:20 and I booked in about 20 minutes early. I was seen 10 minutes before my appointed time  and was walking back to the car just after 10:30, getting home at just after 11 o’clock. Today I’ve experienced the NHS at its very best!

 

The rest of the day has been spent resting (which was highly recommended by the nurse) and reading the literature, regarding the drug and it’s side effects etc, that I was given this morning. Im on a different drug to the one I had previously and far I’ve had no ill effects, but it’s only been a few hours. However, according to what I was told this morning and what I read when I got back home, they could start within a few hours of the injection.

There is only one weedkiller still allowed, glyphosate as the UK managed to convince the rest of Europe that when used correctly it has a minimal safety impact on the user. Please note the words - when used correctlyt. Also the UK has the tightest regulations concerning the use of Weedkiller's. A number of authorities have tried alternatives, such as vinegar but none so far have the same long term effectiveness.

We went for out flu shots today. They have set up a separate entrance to a dedicated room. The nurse asked i we wanted the regular or super shot -- we didn't know the super was available but we said yes.

Total inside time about 5 minutes.

We may be moving the motor home again. There's a place nearer us that has paved/gravelled spaces and is accessible in winter (not that we need it this year!) Also has a much easier drive in; not so much like a single lane road through Arden forest.

I am quite sure the combination of the big moat and the international travel moratorium have helped reduce numbers in Australia but closing state borders and strict lockdowns have no doubt helped as well.

 

Pandemic-related "excess deaths" (including deaths not directly caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but related to people not seeking care or not having "normal" access to care during the pandemic) are approaching 1 in 1,000 in the US.

Greetings one and all, with warm thoughts to Tony.

 

After some anxiety, which I know is not good for me, it looks as though I have got my C*****mas dinner sorted.  The Swan Hotel in Bedford is probably not as posh as the Hotel Metropole in Interlaken but it is at the top end of what Bedford can offer in terms of both price and standard.  I have paid my deposit and hope to sit down to a sumptuous repast at 1 pm on C*****mas Day, provided of course that the virus does not louse everything up.  Yesterday the refunded deposit for the Swiss trip reached my bank account and should help to pay for the dinner.

 

Today it’s back down to earth, for there is ironing to be done.  Somewhere I have a recording of Miriam Erasmus singing “Dashing away with the smoothing iron” but it doesn’t help me enjoy the task.  Then I shall sit down and watch last night’s “Ambulance”, a compelling series if ever there was one.  My round robin is proving particularly taxing to write this year but if it is to be shared it must be finished.  Inspiration, where are you?

Wow, the UK is *almost* as successful as Trumpie and his handling of the Big V.  If only that were a good thing.....

Our Chile con carne was very nice last night but I overdosed on chile powder...oops!

 

Herself is off to moreasons then I chuck youngest Herbert's order off (he is stillisolating until Friday). She will be volunteering at a Sue Rydee shop today and tomorrow. 

 

Yesterday it was.. "take your flight refuelling aircraft to the North Sea opposite Filey" day. Two USAF tankers and two RAF ones were out there for most of the day.

 

Now to get Thursday sorted. Not sure if I have any tasks today..it looks like a good day to stay in out of the rain.
