Good morning everyone 

 

The sun is shining and we have a slight frost and the current temperature is -1C. Instead of spending the day in the cellar I might just take advantage of the dry day and get a few tasks done outside. I want to relocate the bird feeder and there’s a little bit of tidying up to do. I’ll then fit the new handle I got last week to the spade and then cut a hole in the plywood I also got last week. This will make a pleasant change from working in the cellar. 

 

Stay safe, stay sane, enjoy whatever you have planned for the day, back later.

There's a butcher in Kirkby Lonsdale who sells haggis scotch pies and pork pies, which are "award winning", but which I personally don't like - many do.  On the other hand, their plain scotch pie is almost as good as those which I get in Ayr, though s tad more expensive.

Morning all,

A chilly one here today. 

Yesterday's drama was a set of workmen turning up next door to erect scaffolding for roof repairs. 

They quickly established their normal working environment by placing a ghetto blaster on the lawn.  

I then found themheading down my sideway into my back garden to shore up their scaffolding.

"Erm, where are you going and what are you doing in my garden?"

Next I spotted that they'd used my roof tiles to brace their scaffolding against! 

"Wtf are you doing now? If you break that you're paying for it and fixing it".

Explained to the neighbour later that any damage would be his responsibility and next time ASK!

Good morning all,

Sunny here and quite fresh but it should be a nice day.  Went for walk earlier and it blew a few cobwebs away although as usual The Hip is now protesting.

Haven't posted here for a few days for various reasons that I won't bore you with. Have only skimmed through so hope I haven't missed too much.

However I have seen that Warren and Mrs BoD are not well and Mick's brother has problems so wish all of you all the best and hope things improve rapidly.

Chris, having done the preparation for colonoscopies umpteen times over the past 24 years I feel your pain and sympathise.  I just looked forward to the first good meal after it was all over.  Hope your CT scan goes well.

I'm currently awaiting the result from a test 10 days ago so who knows, I may be joining you although I sincerely hope not!

Baz, you are correct sir and I am another year older so thank you.  Obviously there won't be the usual celebrations here at GDB Towers but parcels have been delivered which I'm not allowed to look at until tonight when we'll be having a family Zoom party.  Alcoholic beverages may  will be deployed.  

There is a nice aroma of cake coming from the kitchen. The Boss asked me what sort I wanted for my birthday so I've chosen a good old Victoria Sponge.

A bit nippy out doors but whadya expect - it's December innit.  I'll wear a fleece for my stroll round Tesco's car park as it might be a bit too cold for wandering round in shirtsleeves (and trousers of course).

Just had birthday greetings from grandson Joe at Uni.  He will be joining us on Zoom later but wanted to let us know that he had his first Covid test yesterday which was negative.  Has to take another on Friday and as long as that's OK he'll be coming home for Christmas on Saturday.  His Dad is picking him up so he won't have to risk public transport.  He has to be very careful as he has Type 1 Diabetes. He'll be home for at least a month but doesn't yet know what's happening after that.

Cake was made earlier so I was invited to choose the jam and spread it.  I went for Raspberry and lots of it.  I'm now quite peeved as I've been advised that I have to wait for the Zoom party tonight to sample it.

"That's not fair" I said.  I was told not to be childish!  

 

I'm now going to sit in the corner and sulk.

Herself got told off today. The vaccine people said she shouldn't have had the antibody test (which we will get  the result of) but then..they gave her an antibodies tests! (And she doesn't get the results...) Academe at its worst..

Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Bright sunshine earlier but now  a tad dull and overcast. Will have to make a trip to Tess Coes shortly for a few things I forgot yesterday and fingers crossed that the bakery is up and running, it was closed yesterday and I used the last of the bread this morning.

I congratulate you on your restraint.  My response would be more along the lines of "shift it - now".  And if they didn't then they'd find their scaffolding reduced to a kit of parts next morning.....

We have very nice neighbours. The narrow gap between properties makes side scaffolding difficult unless next door is used. However everyone has always asked in advance. One neighbour tried to get it all on his side so as not to be a nuisance but I suggested using access from our side was safer. Our recent chimney pot fitting was eased very much by gaining ladder access from a neighbours garage roof. I think unannounced access and using ones roof tiles for bracing as in AndyB’s situation is a bit naughty.

Many years ago I visited a Travellers Fare (as I think they were by then) sandwich making facility - tucked away in part of Euston station.  Quite interesting to watch a number of ladies siting round a table buttering slices of bread which wtre then passed to another team of ladies for the filling to be added; apparently all the ladies working there could multi-tac sk d so they didn't just do butterng or filling.

 

I think the 'stale railway sandwich' joke dates n back to WWII when they might well have sometimes spent a little too long on the shelf so to speak.  But even in BTC days all sandwich stock was only supposed to be displayed for one day and if it hadn't sold in that day it was got rid of.  Subsequently of course various food hygiene laws required that to happen in any event for some sorts of filling.  Sounds like it was quite a wasteful process but in fact it wasn't and in the early 1970s they had got demand forecasting down to a very fine art so there was very little waste through unsold sarnies.  Some of the things you get to learn about in a long railwaty career can be quite unexpected

We got out for the morning walk as planned.  The 5 and a half mile walk should have taken about 2 hours, but was over 2 hrs 30 after meeting some friends while out.  Net result was that we had a very rushed lunch before my monthly Cancer Group Zoom meeting.  The meeting was rather dominated by a poor woman who couldn’t get her microphone to work, so we couldn’t hear her, but she could hear everyone else.  She obviously has issues with technology as last month, she couldn’t get onto the meeting at all, so at least it is going in the right direction!

 

Now sat relaxing with a cup (or two) of tea.
