Just wanted to add in here my thoughts about the retirement of Dean Ashton.

Obviously, as a Hammers fan, I'm gutted especially for the fella himself but also for West Ham and England. I really think that if he'd got a good run, he would have been England's first-choice centre-forward and would have been fantastic up front with Rooney.

Even as a spurs fan i must say this is sad, he was a promising player and may well have forced himself into England reckoning

I know there has always been the Jasper Carrott joke (Bluenose) about the only Birmingham would get into Europe is if there was another war. But I do have this feeling about this season.

Good luck, it would make a change, bit like Norwich some years ago

Can I just say, I don't think Ryan Giggs should have won sports personality of the year.

He should get the lifetime acheivement award - in a few years time when he retires.

He's not performed well enough in the last year that he should have been in the running for the BBC award. I have always thought, because its "Sports Personality of the Year" that it was done on a year on year basis (not on the basis of 20 years hard work). If its sports personality of the year, who in British football stands out? I'm not sure anyone does...

Quite agree but I think circumstances dictated last nights winner.Less people were watching due to Mr Cowells final on ITV and maybe all United/Wales fans voted for Giggs to give him the advantage.I think Button should have got it just for the Brawn fairytale.

Totally agree with you there Martin. As we said in the office today, you could have put a dog in Man Utd colours up for the award and he would have won it. Ryan Giggs hasn't played on the world stage, and never will, so a lifetime acheivement award would have been more appropriate. Jenson Button for example is a World Champion.

A personal tragedy for a player who, aside from coming over as one of football's genuine nice guys, could have gone on to be an England "great", a whole-hearted centre-forward in the British tradition. According to the article I read he's only known football, so although he'll obviously never go hungry, what he's going to do now, goodness knows.

It's also a bitter blow for West Ham who are already struggling with an underachieving and injury-ravaged squad plus having to use one or two players I could think of who simply don't deliver and really aren't fit to wear the shirt. Zola has said that he'll have to "bring someone in", presumably that means a loan deal for another player the wrong side of 30.

Hardly building for the future!

Completely agree, both on Giggs and on the lack of anyone else in football who would stand out.

.

Maybe he hasn't played on what I would describe as the 'wider world stage' ........... but then how many other Brit players have 'performed' on the world stage in the last 43 years ?

.

As for Jensen Button, he had a car under him, a bit like Princess Anne who had a four legged friend to help her around.

.

If Giggs had 150,000 so what ?

.

You could have watched the other side and helped ITV make their alleged ??100,000,000 from X-Factor.

.

And I still can't stand Man Utd.

.

Their manager my be outstanding, but his manner and attitude leave a lot to be desired ..... and he claims to be a 'socialist' !

.

He berates officials in a manner that other managers would be disciplined.

His team surround and berate the ref at any contentious decision.

.

And as for their fans, well the least said about Cockneys the better ......................

.

Exit stage left (quickly).

There are other teams in this country, that don't play in the Premiership !

Considering people were writing Giggs off as finished three years ago, I think to bounce back and show that he is still a crucial part of one of the best sides in the country is a very worthy achievement. His performances this and last season have been as good as they have been for many years. Top quality player, model pro - thoroughly deserved.

Which Premiership team do I support?

Spurs.

By my statement I mean't at international level. Biggest mistake in my opinion that he chose to play for Wales over England. There are other players that could have merited the award in the past ie Teddy Sheringham. What get's on my goat is the fact that there were World Champions in the running for the award, and were more deserving, but at the end of the day it's the publics decision.

On another matter, is there is any strength in the rumour that the Portsmouth Players have not been paid yet?

I think that the point I was trying to make was that none of that qualifies him to be Sports Personality of the Year . Obviously, as someone said, it's democracy at work, so the most votes get the prize. Undoubtedly, Giggs deserves recognition, but an award for achievements (and personality) in 2009 isn't the appropriate gong.

Still, if an award is going to go to the wrong person, Ryan Giggs is the right wrong person!

Biggest mistake in my opinion that he chose to play for Wales over England.

He'd have found it quite difficult to play for England, as he was born in Wales to Welsh parents and didn't have an English grandparent, (3 Welsh, 1 Sierra Leone) as such he could only really ever play for Wales, It's a common myth that he could play for England, he couldn't, he played for England schoolboys because that's where he went to school.

Oh, no doubt of that chap - a worthy winner, insomuch votes. I can't help but feel he would have been prouder of the BBC Lifetime Experience award in a few years time. For the record, I voted for Jenson Button.

And as was summed up perfectly above - winning all of those awards doesn't make him a candidate for sports personality of the year.

And also agreed - wrong candidate, but the right wrong candidate to win it! At least Giggs has always conducted himself in a manner befitting a footballer, unlike a certain Mr Rooney on saturday.

It's not a myth he could have played for England. Anyone born in the United Kingdom or has up to their Grandparents from the United Kingdom can play for any of the home countries. It depends on you persuasion as to how you go. Look at Manuel Almunia, he does qualify for England.

I am more than happy with Giggs getting the award. Rooney cannot do what he does without Giggs, and to often one player is held up as more that the other 10 players on a football pitch. I think being consistently outstanding for 15 years does earn him this award, rather than waiting for a life time achievement award.

By the way I am not a Utd fan, and I think from a sportingpoint of view then David Haye is the man as he litterally did beat Goliath and he has by far the biggest personality.

There is some sort of "gentleman's agreement" between all the home nations. If the FIFA rules strictly applied, any "British" player could play for any of the home nations. This would mean (normally) that Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland could pick any of the English players who cannot get a game for England, even if they have no link with that 2nd country. The agreement negates this, and places an emphasis on birthplace(s).

The point of the agreement is that if you have a direct blood link to one of the home nations, you can't play for another home nation - unless you also have a direct link with that second country. Giggs has that direct blood link to one of the home nations (Wales, through himself) but doesn't have that link with England.

Almunia qualifies under residence rules, having never been capped for any other country. The goalposts keep moving for international players, to the point where there's now a player for Scotland, who isn't Scottish, has no Scottish parents or grandparents but has lived there since he was five.

The question is Del - does he consider himself scottish, have a scottish accent, a british passport and a home in Scotland?

If he considers himself scottish, who is to say that he is not and therefore ineligible?

I was not born in England, but I was born to two English parents and have lived here since I was five. Does that make me any less english? I do also hold a british passport and have a home here.

My point is, home is what the individual defines, surely?

If on the grounds that he feels more Scottish due to his upbringing than anything else, is that not his right to declare his intention to play for Scotland?
