Next batch of Class 70's

Recommended Posts

The intermodal side scaled back their use drastically at the start of the month due to northern Hampshire apparently causing them to spontaneously combust - the ones on coal traffic don't visit Hampshire so don't seem to have that problem. ;)

Must be the "Basingstoke Triangle". Not quite as glamorous as Bermuda.....

They're still about - my mate at Lawley Street has them regularly on some of his jobs. Having said that, everytime I work into Basford Hall Yard there are often five or six of them scattered around sitting idle.

I saw 20 at Bletchley going north with a long containe train at a rate of knots on Friday evening whilst on my way to The Thames Valley Expo at Knowl Hill with Green Ayre. I still need to see 13 and 19 and according to a list posted elsewhere this morning 19 is at Loughborough. Perhaps as it hs beentraversing the pyrotechnic hot spot of North hampshire on a regulat basis they are having some upgraded fire extinguishers fitted just in case.

PS If it wasn't so warm I would already have my coat on as I head for the door.

Hi Guys,

I received the following email earlier today, via a pal.

Bob

70s...

70019 (DFGI) has been despatched to Brush Traction at Loughborough for engine development testing work. The three Class 70s currently sidelined at Eastleigh; 70001 70008 and 70009, are there for inspection, in conjunction with GE, with regards fault finding and performance issues.

I think the technical term is 'teething troubles'!! They are still more reliable and light years quicker into service from ordering than anything that could have been built in the UK.

So much for the aforementioned change...... All I can say is that the novelty has worn off now.

Today was rather cloudy, so last night's shot will do as it's a good deal better than Wednesday's.

I wonder whether we'll see more of them on this run now?

Yesterday (or was it the day before?) double headed 70s went past my window at work on one of the Rugeley-bound (I believe) coal trains. I wasn't really paying enough attention (one of my work colleagues was discussing something with me at the time- very inconsiderate), but I think they were 70010 and 70003. I guess one had failed.

Heres some taken down the Felixstowe branch

Taken from a foot crossing, well next to it obviously, although it looks close, it's actually further away than a normal crossing, but it's more open.

I found it on Saturday and in the meantime Network Rail had cut back some of the foliage which made viewing a bit awkward, not sure if my presence had triggered the clearance or just lucky, but either way it's a good spot

Portbury - Crewe, 70010 and 70003 - not a failure though

I was relieved at Bedford this morning by Dave 'Gridboy' Smith, one our Bedford lads, and knowing that he'd just been passed out on 70s I asked him what he thought of them.... a very enthusiastic 'thumbs up' was his reply. Their foibles aside, he said the acceleration is much better than any 66 - last week he relieved the southbound Hope Cement tanks at Bedford and by Ampthill Tunnel was up to 55mph with over 2,000 tons on, with a 66 he'd be struggling to reach 40mph in the same place.

Was disappointed to hear last week that we're not going to learn them at Rugby now!

When the loco works it it works well and will pull a street down its just the daft niggling faults that let the class down there acceleration is something else when coming off the Tyne Valley at Norwood Jn and trotting down the slow's to Birtley once you get the road the road there by the time your passing through Chester le Street your shutting off power as you just about at line speed and with a 66 your doing 35-40 mph depending on how good the 66 is! They just need to sort the daft faults out with them!
