The Scout Green shot does look like metal turnings or similar; the scrapyard next to Tyseley shed used to send out a lot of these. Both loads seem to be a bit high for my liking; I can imagine them losing a bit of the top before they arrive.

What are the chances of finding a shot with 2 class 17's working, and some different loads in a 16T?

 I think it was discussed quite a bit, earlier in the thread.

Around Tyneside, Sunderland and North Durham it in the late sixties it was quite high.

These locations still possessed a large number of large and small rail connected industries that relied on British Railways.

The baled scrap is probably from Sheperds on the riverside branch and is making it's way to Consett via Tyne Yard.

 

You could regularly see two Claytons "Double Banking" up to Consett around the time of the photo but it was only the drivers that knew the engine fire bell in the Clayton cabs had a piece of rag or wood wedged between the rapper and gong as they rang constantly. :)
