hmrspaul
That job at Arpley must have been very recent when phot'd - I very rarely managed to get to anything derailed or over the blocks before a C&W Examiner had red-carded it. RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted May 7, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 7, 2015 Sugar beet was carried in any available open wagons during the harvest season. In later years before road haulage took over 16T minerals were the most common.
jwealleans
I thought it looked a bit pink for sugar beet, although it might have been rained on heavily after loading.
Porcy Mane
I'd have a punt at sugar beet? RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted May 13, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 13, 2015 I don’t recall seeing a 16T in the consist of a weed-killing train before 4657,7840 at Staines 9th May 80. by 54A South dock, on Flickr Etruria Stoke Staffordshire November 1973 by loose_grip_99, on Flickr 1055 at Norwood jcn on the 09.55 (as l remember) Acton-Norwood jcn.17th July 74. by 54A South dock, on Flickr
Fat Controller
I'd venture to say that the Staines photo wasn't a weed-killer train, but a mixed freight conveying vehicles from one. Also visible are two sheeted coil carriers and two Class A tanks, which appear still to be in use carrying fuel (the ones used in the weed-killer trains were usually prominently branded as water-carriers). I'd suggest it was a service between the WR and either Eastleigh or Hoo Jct. Edited May 13, 2015 by Fat Controller

RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted May 14, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2015 You can't always, it depends on whether the author has set it up for sharing on Flickr. If s/he hasn't then you can only copy the link. If they've set up something called BBC Code (no I don't know what it stands for either) then you copy the BBC code and insert that into the message on here. By the magic of computing the BBC code goes away and fetches the picture to display on here. (Am cooking the Head of Household's tea so will try and do a 'how to' later unless someone beats me to it.
