branchie
Why is it, things only look wonky after you take the picture ! Too much Brains when modelling Leon!?! Seriously, the layout is looking fantastic - keep up the good work. Branchie.
Leon
Thanks Branchie, I think I did have a Strongbow with me whilst working...lol Need some input from all you guys with the knowlage, Im pretty much at the stage now where I can run trains, I need to start buying the wagons needed to operate freight services that ran around Cardiff, Newport, docks area's from 1985 onward. Im having to go from memory and a few books, and it seems most of the steel wagons I need are not available just yet. ie BAA & BDA,s. The list of freight trains I think would be seen running to the yard for marshalling or through the yard to the steelworks or docks are listed below, if anyone has any others to speak about please let me know. Trainload Metals : Cargowaggons, covered vans, BBA/BDA coil wagons POA & HEA scrap wagons to and from steelworks or docks, to/from places such as Trostre, Llanwern, Port Talbot, Ebbw Vale, Rogerstone, Orb branch & places in England. Using Class 60, 37 & 56's Trainload Petroleum : BP TTA & TEA's to/from docks and also crude oil in black TEA's. Using Class 60 and 37's Trainload Coal : Household & Railfreight coal in HEA's, MGR to/from pits in MGR HAA's using class 37's and the odd 56. Railfreight Dist : Freightliner flats to/from docks, mixed speedlink services, vans for Ford Bridgend, timber and fertaliser to West Wales. MOD traffic for West Wales, Caerwent & Prescoed Using Rfd 37 & 47's Departmental wagons can also be stabled in the yard, and also wagons for the nearby wagon works. Also Fuel to the depot using 3-4 TTA's I think these are most of the more regular types of traffic that would have been seen. All input will be very welcome. Thanks all Leon
Guest Dave.C
Hi Dave, its made from rail, cut and bent then sprayed with white primer. Does the job and saves the pennies. Simple but effective, Thanks
Grimleygrid
Hi Leon, I think that you have pretty much got it covered although I am sure that there are plenty of members on here that can provide you with correct workings and wagon formations. For metals the Bachmann BDA and BAA/BBA is right up your street for slab, mainly BAA/BBA but occasionally you could see a few BDAs being used. Coil you can use the BAA with cradles Oh and don’t forget some iron ore tipplers, either triple-headed 37s, double-headed 56s or 37/7s and then of course class 60s! Just the job! I look forward to seeing lots of block trains running on your layout.

Leon
Hi all, so excited I had to take some pics before I have renumbered and weathered the loco's and HAA's. A pair of Trainload Coal 37's arrive at the yard with empties for the docks.
Leon
Hi Rob, great photos, you have some great rolling stock. Maybe you can bring some of those steel carrieres over mine for a run on sometime. Cheers Leon.

br2975
Leon, . You've got me thinking now, to get the two dozen or so HAA hoppers boxed away in my roof !!!!! . Could photo form part of your inspiration ? . Taken nearly 20yrs ago, at what was then Ryan's blending site on Fletcher's Wharf alongside the Roath Dock and set for Aberthaw. . Nostalgia, what a gift. . Brian
pitbull1845
Nice photos Leon, they look at home already... You have me tempted now! A construction 37 has arrived at Bocott, just waiting for the 56 to turn up! Cheers Scott
Guest Dave.C
I love the messy look of the track in the last picture, if you recreated it in model form I am sure people would scoff. Any idea what the blue star on the loco signifies?

Any idea what the blue star on the loco signifies? Its compatability, I think loco's with the same symbol can couple and run together I believe. Yes it is a great pic, not much ballast there. definate maybe
Leon, I believe the compatability is not for coupling but for multiple running. For some strange reason this country has run with 4 or 5 different multiple working systems. A full explanation can be seen here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_working It seems to be a bit of a nightmare for the planners!
big T
Yep the blue star indicates multiple working compatability between loco's. Not all locos were suitable for working in multi! That's not to say that locos with different MW equipment couldn't be coupled together - Just that they would have to be driven in tandem - i.e. a driver in each loco. yellowvanman
Hi Leon , great layout ..like the spaced out feel to it ..not to crammed up ..excellent...Heres a pair of `choppers` heading through Newport 1987..not sure how rare that was ..they were on bogie bolster steel wagons wagons , may have a going away shot somewhere..? they dumped train round corner ( alexandra dock?) then returned ( north ) ..
Leon
Good evening all, thanks for the pics always welcome and very usefull. Whilst having man flu tonight I renumbered the 37's. They just need to get dirty next and have there buffers changed to oval ones. 37803 & 37898 "Cwmbargoed DP" prepare to leave the yard at dusk with empties. Also a shot of all my mainline locos on shed for the weekend. Paint on the tracks is causing running problems at the mo, needs a good clean. Also 56032 has a play with the new HAA's for Grimley...
Leon
The new HAA's had a bit of action today and got a bit dirty, not sure if Im happy with the out come? Also 37803 got a bit to "dirty" for my like. 37898 is a little more sutile. Note to self..Less is more...
Arpleymodeller
I think the weathering on the 37 and HAAs is spot on,all the 37 needs now is a Howes refurbished sound decoder to complete the 80s feel
pitbull1845
Hi Leon, I have attached a photo (again, sorry) which I took at East Usk Yard just outside of Newport. I thought you may like it as it sort of resembles what you have achieved with your layout. Wagons awaiting their next tour of duty in an overgrown yard...
Leon
Pictures alway welcome Scott, thanks. Think mine are close to them... I think I over did the grime on 803, unsure weather to take some of the wifes nail varnish remover to it or leave it alone in case I make it worse.......What do you think guys? Leon.
P.C.M
Hi Leon, I think maybe 37803 is a bit overdone though I am abit worried about you useing nail polish remover it might remove more than just the paint. The other thing I noticed, and I don't want to ruin your day but 37/8s were refurbished loco's and had extra weight added and one window on each side was removed, plus the loco's should have modified grilles like your 37/4. This may not bother you but i thought you ought to know. Sorry. Weathering on 37898 and the HAAs is great. Cheers Peter.
Leon
Thanks Peter, I will never look at my new loco with the same fondness again now ! lol, I guessed there would be a few differences such as oval buffers, missing window...etc. Maybe in a few years when I got time I will get them correct. What do you suggest to remove some of the dirt from 803? Cheers Leon...
Leon
Evening all, Three more HAA's were shiped to the yard today, now got a rake of 9, only another 19 to go..., from the Midlands (Modelshop up North). Also went for it and cleaned 37803 with nail poilish remover, it seemed to work as I think I did over do the paint. Im yet to do the nuber area as the transfer will come off, will do there once I got the replacement numbers ready. Added some pics of the washed 37.. Leon..
