Marcus 37
Hi James I have to say that 66 looks truly awful but, take that as a compliment as I saw the real one in that state and that was my first impression. You've captured it wonderfully. Just a shame that they end up Looking like that due to some low life scroates. Cheers Marcus
RMweb Premium James Makin Posted December 24, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 24, 2016 (edited) Hands up, who'd forgotten about this old thread? With so much work on Worthing MRC's Loftus Road layout this year, knocking up building after building, it seems like an eternity since my last rolling stock project! Now with the Warley show over, attention could finally go back to some pure self-indulgence, adding more hoppers to my loaded MGR coal train... HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Joining the fleet today are 6 new HAA's, in the form of 350194, 352453, 351280, 351023, 351612 and 350933. As with the previous ones, each wagon is based on a portrait captured from Flickr and recreated as closely as I can manage! The base for this project is the retooled Hornby HAA, my remaining collection of wagons are nearly all the 'Barry' versions, and here we can see them all lined up awaiting some action! HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr As with the previous batches, the main work was to replace the buffers with S Kits white metal versions, and Smiths instanter couplings replacing the old Hornby tension-locks. The bodies were all repainted back to silver, with new TOPS transfers added, before sealing with matt varnish, ready for weathering. HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr For this batch, I started with a mid-brown base colour of Humbrol 113, painted on and wiped-off using cotton buds. This was later topped with a coating of Humbrol 32 dark grey, and key colour variations picked out at this stage, carefully following photographs to model each difference in the set of wagons. Radio 1's Scott Mills podcasts from 2011 provide the recommended background to this task. HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Varnished and loaded with real crushed coal dust, the wagons are ready to roll! HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr First up, no. 352453 in patchy EWS stencil colours (on brown frames) and patch-painting, potentially covering either an old Trainload Coal or Transrail branding... ...followed by 350933 in faded 'beige'! I'm not quite sure whether this was faded red or filthy yellow, but I just model what I see! HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Above, no.350194 was up next in old school Railfreight brown, and below is 351023 in weathered EWS red. HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Below, 351612 looked interesting with its small graffiti tag and patchy weathering on the wagon panels. HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Last and not least is 351280 in Railfreight red livery, with heavy staining and the red paint on the frames losing the battle to the rust and dirt! HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr The key to a realistic MGR set is to reproduce fairly mundane wagons with no major stand-out features, so although these aren't the most glamorous things to work on, it's been good to tackle something quite ordinary! With this batch of 6 wagons, it brings the overall trainload to 22 - reasonable, but there are still 14 more to add to this rake before it can be seen on Loftus Road! HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr In the spirit of the season, I couldn't help but show off my other 'modelling' conquest of late..! Christmas Cake by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Inspired by Pendon, I've gone for a snowy rolling countryside village approach to the Christmas cake this year!! Hi guys, Thanks - Wayne's on the money here! Melly
Where is the spare 67 Cab now? I have to admit I am gob smacked at the apparent lack of accountability for spares / assets on the railways. RMweb Premium Popular Post James Makin Posted February 5, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 5, 2017 Hi guys, I bet you've been longing for the next batch of coal hoppers..! The fleet is now at 28 completed wagons out of 36, so we're nearly there I promise! Here's what we've got today... HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Joining the fleet today is a mixed set of HAA & HDA-coded wagons, with the attractive Barry stencils adorning some of the sides. HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr The numbers modelled today are 368349, 368357, 357572, 368363, 355828 and 368169. The natural starting point was the more recent Hornby release with the correct-style Barry stencils, these 'HFA' wagons below had their canopies removed and silver bodies patch-painted to reflect the chosen prototype wagons. HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Creating a mixed batch, I wanted to include a couple more of my favourite yellow-framed hoppers too alongside the 'Barry' versions. Here we can see HAA 355828 taking shape with some Humbrol 113 being painted over the varnished-silver hopper body. The varnish gives a good key for the paint to cling to the side, prior to being partly rubbed off with cotton buds. Humbrol 32 dark grey is then applied over the top later. Classic tracks from Sophie Ellis-Bextor's debut solo album are the natural choice for hopper weathering. Before long, they were taking shape - HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr First up is HDA 368349 in faded red-framed livery and stencil numbering. I chose the later Hornby 'HFA' donor models as the 'Barry' printing is in more realistic stencil style too, rather than the earlier versions produced in numerous volumes from earlier in the 2000s! HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Following this was similarly-numbered HDA 368357, only a few digits away, and in very similar condition! Below, HDA 368169 proudly displays its 'Barry' logo while exhibiting a very faded framework and generally grotty appearance - HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr HAA 355828 above displays classic former faded yellow Trainload Coal livery, with logos and Barry wording painted out black, and an interesting chalk scrawling on the side. Below, HDA 368363 is in a faded red livery, losing the battle to a grey/white undercoat by the looks of it! HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Last but not least we have HAA 357572 in 'Barry' Trainload Coal yellow - HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr This batch of six makes up the current 28-wagon set, with another 8 ready to follow in due course to make the full 36 of the loaded rake I'm building. Having tackled the mainstays of the fleet in early Railfreight, Railfreight Red, Trainload Coal yellow, Mainline and EWS, I sense a few more early-privatisation ones to slot in-between, perhaps with some cheeky Transrail 'T's making an appearance possibly! HAA Wagons by James Makin by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Not long to go until these are all done, and then on to tackle some more individual and exciting projects I promise! One factor delaying much railway modelling recently was my new baby being delivered a few weeks back - I've had my new Focus RS on order for 9 months now, the moment of picking it up seemed to good to be true! I couldn't resist getting a silly plate for it..! I'm almost at the end of the gentle 1,000 mile running-in period and loving it so far, can't wait to see what it can really do! It's a daily driver so replaces my ageing but much-loved ten year old orange 'ASBO' Focus ST for the long motorway commutes. It's a really smooth & practical ride compared to its noisy & aggressive older green brother in it's Mountune MR375 guise, the two RS complement each other quite nicely! Cheers, James

I think weathering without an airbrush is the way forward, as I definitely don't have time to and can't be bothered to get it out. And as for the car... Thanks, Jack. Thanks Jack! I'm terrible with the airbrush so anything where you don't need one is good...the only thing I ever use it for is roof grime/track spray on locos, and even then I save up 2 or 3 locos in one go to save the hassle of repeatedly cleaning it all out!! HAAs look great, not so sure about Sophie Ellis bextor - I'm sure I used to fancy her mum when she did blue peter , and that pretty much dates me Aw, Sophie's great! She's nearly 40 now too, she gets better with age haha! RMweb Premium Popular Post James Makin Posted February 26, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted February 26, 2017 After what seems like an absolute age spent building these filthy HAA hoppers, I thought I'd finally run a train on Worthing MRC's Loftus Road! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr 66010 is given the dubious honour of guiding the current rake of 28 hoppers around the layout, with me anxiously looking on and hoping that they don't fall off! It is traditional that the projects you've spent the most amount of time working on are the trickiest to get running well, but someone must be smiling on me, no issues other than a wonky layout board alignment! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr I'm building this train for my next layout and although not at all prototypical for Loftus, who can resist a good MGR rake? The replacement EWS HTA hoppers don't quite have the same character I don't think! Just got 8 more of the loaded HAA hoppers to build, then a nice break before I tackle the 36 empty HAAs for the balancing MGR working! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Of course as we know from the above posts, recommended listening while modelling power station coal trains is Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who we saw and then got to meet last night, instant win!
