60091
Hi Jeff Just been catching up on few pages of Kirby Luneside...lots more to read there! The layout went into hibernation in late November and would normally have been back in operation mid March. However, a lousy, freezing, non existant spring meant that it was too cold in the attic to take the covers off. Since then any start to playing trains has been overtaken by events......had to do something about 12 years of neglect to my house. The roof leaks, the guttering is almost non existant and you've probably seen the condition of the interior of the attic in some of the photos from the thread.....so...the builders started on Monday. A big job and big money. For now I've got a couple of other modelling jobs to do but hopefully S+C 79-83 should be back in operation mid May. I was amazed I got it out of the attic. It was never meant to be moved, but came down he narrow stairs and through a small door with about an inch to spare! Re the L+Y layout. Planning for this has sort of drifted. Would still like a 00 layout where the plan was always to "bury" the railway in an urban landscape.. Also came across some fantastic photos on Flicker showing the last years of the Pallion/Penshaw branch in Sunderland, which started me thinking about the possibilities of that location for a model. Where ever a new OO layout is located it will be urban grot c1980. When work in the attic is finished I'll be able to take a fresh look at the space available for a more permanent layout and also, hopefully, move a small TT/3mm layout up there from my spare bedroom. RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted April 21, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 21, 2013 The layout looks as good as ever and it sounds like you were lucky to get it moved without much damage. At least you got your priorities right with the infrastructure of the house taking precedence. Once sorted, you can get back into the attic.... have you thought of installing a Velux-type window? There are a number of keen followers of your layout, clearly pleased to see it re-emerge. Hope you get modelling soon. In the meantime, continue to slog through KL!! 60091
Hi folks...thanks for the comments following the re-emergence of the layout. Jeff .... Four Velux windows going in, hopefully this week, and I've almost reached 2013 with KL. Originally I looked again at the thread to sort and clear out files of the many photos I'd taken since trains started running. Found this one taken from a more unusual angle. Google Earth 1980! 60091
Settle-Carlisle 1979-1983 The Movie! 40 143 Tinsley-Carlisle with 47053 Mossend - Severn Tunnel Jct ABS So - the layout has been back in action for a couple of weeks after possibly the longest attic conversion ever and hopefully I'll have a few weeks to play trains before it goes into hibernation again for the winter. I've been experimenting with a digital camera and Youtube so here are a couple of short videos as a change from the usual photos. 40 024 Mossend-St Blazey with 40 060 on ballast. The layout survived well in storage with only a few trees falling off and very slight warping on the scenic sections. After the track was cleaned, the locos were each given a 5 minute run-in and the 1979-80 timetable was introduced with only a couple of the Class 40s having problems when running at slow speed. A couple of new arrivals for Dalesrail services. The Farish 108 and 101. Just out of their boxes and still un-weathered.

RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted October 22, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 22, 2013 Hi Alan, Good to see you back in action: nice video. Your layout hasn't got the attention it deserves over the last couple of years - a great bit of work. Hope to see more postings in the near future. 60091
To d winpenny, bri.s, Mc Russ, Ben A, Cornish trains jez and acg.mr Many thanks for the comments. For anyone who hasn't seen S+C 1979-83 before - it's been a very quiet year with the layout being dismantled since November 2012. With the newly converted and well insulated attic, hopefully, I should be able to run trains for a few more weeks. In past years it was so cold in the attic that services had to be suspended from early November until March. Hi Jeff I've occasionally had a look at the site over the last few months - trying to keep up with progress on Kirby Luneside.! It's been a busy year with a couple of other problems ( apart from attics) to deal with but hopefully I should be loging on more often from now on. No progress with any new layout L&Y / NE branch or whatever. The layout is now set up in the space where a permanent attic layout would have been built, and with more work needed on the house next year, for now, I'm happy to relax playing trains with S+C 79-83. A few more photos which hopefully I haven't posted before! 45 036 Carlisle-Nottingham passing 40 060 1982 Class 45 Healey Mills-Kingmoor 1982 40 047 with 7E84 Kingmoor-Tinsley 1979

60091
Hi Alan, I really enjoyed the video, and the latest pics look great. Looking forwards to seeing those DMUs weathered up. Cheers Peter. Hello Peter I will get around to weather the DMUs. With the more expensive items I usually wait until I've forgotten exactly how much I paid for them before starting to weathering. It also reminded me that none of the coaching stock has been weathered. Another job I keep forgetting to do. Maybe if I didn't mention it no one would notice! 60091
Settle-Carlisle 1969-73 A good friend (and another S&C man) has started work on his new layout so it was time to get the locos out of their boxes for a test run. Where better than on S&C 79-83 with a continuous run and reasonable length trains to pull. Everything ran very well after many months in store. A Class 40 and a Peak have been added to his "to buy" list and I was asked about weathering them all for the new layout. Normal (1979-83) will be resumed! 60091
A couple of videos and a few odds and ends. ..and a few photos of a couple of recent projects to tidy up 2 TTAs bought at a toy fair back in July and an attempt to make a Peco Butterley Steel 16t mineral look more like a typical 16t MCO/MCV. Work included making a simple end door while at the other end filling in the strange corrugated panels with milliput filler. An interesting experiment but probably too fiddly to be worth altering the other 50+ 16t wagons on the layout. With so many running on the layout the Peco model was a cheap alternative - however- If you want a nice 16t mineral buy the one on the right! And the TTs These two must have had one not very careful owner! A lot of cleaning up was needed - the usual overdone weathering. For a bit of variety one was to become a CO2 tank, the other a continental chemicals ferry tank. Using photos from David Larkins books, I can't claim anything like 100% accuracy but a first attempt at a wagon conversion in N. Out for a test run. The ferry tank would definitely benefit from a correct set of owner/leasing company transfers. Finally a few photos from recent operating sessions. With the attic converted and lot warmer the layout still hasn't gone into hibernation this year.
