EBay madness

I agree....

The locomotive body is a plastic kit, made over the years by a few companies, Kitmaster, Airfix, and presently by Dapol. (A pity the modeller didn't use the kit tender top as well...)

Given the transfers, it is possible that this was a Dapol kit, as they have produced various names/numbers, etc. Kitmaster and Airfix only supplied Biggin Hill...

The locomotive chassis, complete with motor, driving wheels, rods, cylinders, front bogie and rear trailing truck is from a Tri-ang Railways R.50 "Princess Victoria", and dates from 1961 or 1962 (The distinctive driving wheels were only used on these models.)

So, the wheels are all wrong, even given that the driving wheels are the solid sintered iron type, but with spokes! (Bulleid-Stanier Type? ;) )

The simplified rods, without the valve gear, are also typical, R.50. A bit like a Bulleid...but the slide bars and cross head are wrong...

The tender is also from a Tri-ang Railways "Princess", most probably from the same locomotive.

Pure Stanier, but painted green!

At least someone has tried a bit of modelling!

The photos have a legal background as well... ;)

A few years ago I picked up cheap, an old princess chassis and tender frame fitted with an Airfix Evening Star loco body and tender top. :)

I would think that the piston rods (and the valve rods) were polished by repeatedly rubbing in and out of the packing glands?

The slide bars would tend to be polished by the crosshead running back and forth?

Mainly though, these areas would be kept clean as any charr or other particles would act as grinding paste, increasing wear, exactly where it was not desirable...(The same goes with the hydraulic rams on modern earth moving, etc. machinery. These are also usually gleamingly clean...)

The coupling, connecting, and other, rods were usually wiped over with an oily rag (At least that was how I was taught while an apprentice loco cleaner at Bridgnorth!). The standard cleaning potion being a secret mixture of Steam Oil and Paraffin, applied with cotton waste (or more recently by an amazing selection of "rags"! :O  ).

It was intended as a joke - obviously it failed! - The point being that this obvious fact is almost always missed by the weathering 'experts'.

The rods were sometimes clean, but as often as not, black like everything else - it probably depended on the individual depot. I've never been able to replicate the oily sheen of cleaned rods though.

Here's an interesting diorama.....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Scrapyard-00-GAUGE-inter-city-125-diesel-and-coach-heavily-rusted-and-weathered-/301340585422?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item46294c6dce

So, bearing in mind this livery was being phased out in the 1980s, when the HSTs were barely 10 years old, I guess this scene depicts a typical HST in the early to mid 1980s? Personally, I can't recall seeing withdrawn HST cars hanging round Donny works with the Deltics....

P.S. The listing power car looks like it has flat tyres on the front bogie (well, I guess it could be possible?)

43001 got cut up around 1990 but I don't think that even got into the standard blue/grey livery. The next to go was 43173 after Southall in 1997.

'In good weathered condition'  'Possibly London Midlands Scottish Region'

That'll be 0 for 2 as they say in baseball parlance

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-OO-Gauge-Model-Railways-Weathered-Suburban-Passenger-Coach-/221569966976?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item3396996380

And it's not 'Suburban' either.  0 for 3 then!

Whats next from GBL? :jester:

Actually, after the current HST power car (The coach used scraped is probably a Hornby short one?), there is a GWR 2-6-2 T Prairie Tank Loco, Slope top tanks version, the basis of which appears to hail from Italia! :O

So, look out for scraped Tank Locos next week! ;)  :jester:

That'll be the "its red/ maroon, therefore its LMS" school of thought then!

Possibly is stated though! It is "Possibly" as used in an outer suburban train on the Eastern Region, as old, cascaded main line stock? ;)

Nor "good" nor "weathered" (more like tarred! badly!) either.

That's 0 for 5.

It might (just) have been worth the £2.99 if it had been left alone.

It's either a short one or a long one with a bit chopped out of the middle and the ends joined together with what looks like duct tape. Memo - removing the window strip does not look like a scrapped real coach, it just proves it's a damaged model. Plus the seagulls have been busy again.

Can't wait for the 4575s (Not really just joking! :O :jester: )

EDIT. It might just be worth the fiver for the underframe and bogies of the Hornby power car - maybe......

Hi,

Is the person referred to as "Gosturde" the same as the ebay seller gostude ?

If so can somebody enlighten me to the reason for the insulting name ?

I bought half a dozen Bachmann wagons from him on Ebay, arriving tomorrow hopefully, before i came across the end of this thread.

Thanks,

Jim

The over-the-odds prices. The wilful misdescription of RTR items as "kitbuilt". Sometimes both in the same model, such as this unholy mess here - just look at the optimistic price!

Greg Diffen is his real name, and he has a sizeable collection of Studebaker cars, quite probably part-funded/maintained by sales of said overpriced models.

Do keep us posted. Sounds to me like he's using you as a convenient storage place!

That one is really only fit for the bin (you might be able to salvage a few parts, but........) Shift the decimal point one place to the right and it would still be too much! (IMHO)

EDIT That's left of course! (oops!)

Ah, I see your point now after looking at that auction.

I will let you know what state my New MIB Bachmann wagons from him are in when they arrive.

The prices seemed reasonable, £10.50 to £11.50 for discontinued part numbers, free postage.

Jim

Hmm, reply quoting original post doesn't seem to work for me.
