EBay madness

This bloke is having a laugh.....

http://www.ebay.co.u...00#ht_500wt_949

There is a big gap between starting price (albeit with reserve) and BIN. Time of year is becoming a factor, too. On the one hand, people are looking to raise a bit of cash for Xmas, on the other, people are more likely to splash out silly money when there is a present to be found.

I wanted this - first one I've seen on ebay in three years - but the price was too high for me.

Apparently everyone wants it, which is the more surprising considering the Golden Rocket never actually ran.....

Something odd about the kit master one - location is listed as being lancs,uk but all of his listing state that the item is outside the uk and will be delivered by airmail. Non-uk seller pretending to be a uk seller? Seems to have a fair number of positive feedback though.

Now let's see. Which seems better value? This model with metal bits and a motor, RTR & DCC-ready

or this one, 50 years old, plastic to the core, and a kit to boot

No question as to value for money, but collector's items don't follow normal economics. Different colours or even transfers can make a huge difference in price. Some really ridiculous prices have been paid for what is really old junk. The Kitmaster Duchess isn't all that rare though. I would have though £45 was pushing one's luck. Collector's really want these still sealed in cellophane! The seller has loads of other high priced 'collectables. I seriously doubt he's going to get £99 + £5 for a Dublo SR horse box, even if it does have the horse. (These are 'worth' more than the wagon, but watch out for repros.)

London Transport seem to have gone green long before it was fashionable!

(Looks like he's used the pic from another sale in error as there is an identical item correctly listed).

Edit: Now has correct pic

Hardly "New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item." seeing as it's creased.

I was aware that these were quite sought after; indeed in the past I've bought a couple when I've noticed a particularly low asking price at a show and sold them on Ebay for a small profit. But nothing like this!!

I'm stunned - you can't fault the seller - started at 99p. I was thinking at first it was a newbie got carried away in a bidding frenzy (score of 13 as I write) but the second place bidder had a score of 140+

I guess some people will pay lot for the right transfers (decals)?

Same 2 bidders have pushed this Bachmann WD up to £175 with 2 hours to go! I got a slightly used factory weathered one for ~ £65 + p/p a couple of years back. Lovely model but no way I'd pay the larger part of £200 for it.

As I sold one of these a few months back for nothing like this I'm stunned - but a quick look at the bid history reveals normal bidding up to £51 and then two lunatics slugging it out. Rails stuff also sells well because there is the added reassurance of main dealer service and security!

I have to be honest there are some strange goings on.....

Prices seem to follow no particular trend and it would also seem Evo Stik has made a comeback. I mean £250.00 for a Bachmann 40 WTF???

I'm looking for certain models to add to my collection and also some to rework into other locos, I appreciate that some of it is the luck of the draw but I thin there is some tat also and possibly even people bidding who don't have a clue !

Seems like the guy bidding on the 40 got caught out. His bid of £250 went in when the price was £39 so perhaps he thought I'll make sure I get it because no-one else will bid that high, and he was not even expecting to pay 3 figures. Then someone else tried the same trick ...

Saw a similar thing a couple of years ago for a standard set of Astra 7 spoke alloy wheels which sold for £3995 when the next lowest bid was £3994 and the next was a more realistic £225 so it looks like 2 people did the same thing there, funny enough they were relisted the following week by the original seller, surprise surprise.

There was one of these Bachmann 40s that finished last night £56.00 plus £5.50 p+p, I wonder if it was the "unlucky" bidder that did not win the £250.00 one ?? now that really was madness for a run of the mill model.
