Theres not enough meat on her to live on! ;)

Think I would chose Mr Mears!

Off to the land of nod now, I just Hope the world (and RMweb) doesn't end overnight!!

Just as an aside, I think Warners have made an astute commercial move, after all, 12,000 plus RMwebbers cant be wrong, can they?

I would like to add my congratulations to the growing list.

You must have said something to impress Warners, and they obviously liked it. I hope that Yourself, the Mods. and all the members are able to enjoy the stability that this now gives RMweb.

Joining the party rather late as I haven't been near a PC until now except for a quick look first thing when I saw the initial announcement but didn't get chance to reply. Now read all 13 pages :O

Nothing I can add to what has already been said as I fully support the decision and understand the reasons - as I helped organise the first Members' Day at Derby way back in 2007 and more recently in 2010, I'm pleased that they will continue in the same format. That first time we all got together having never met but we were already like old friends and some had travelled a considerable distance to be part of that special event - Capt Kernow and Co from Devon and Pudley and Sunshine from the South Coast (plus many others) all the way to Derby because of RMweb and Andy :sungum:

I reread that looking for smilies but didn't find any. Are you serious? And are you volunteering to manage such a system, which is a) in respect of an area of discussion which would be way outside forum rules, and b ) of no relevance whatsoever to RMWeb? Read my lips - in general, politics and some other subjects are not permitted, but we let some go as long as it remains intelligent and constructive. We're not obliged to do that. When it goes too far, we lock it - simples. And you're suggesting *another* layer of non railway modelling rant that *we* would have to deal with?

Another forum of which I am a member has such an off topic section, and it's setup that you have to register and then actively select membership of this sub forum to view it. In effect it's completely unmoderated and all the political stuff, naff jokes etc go in there, however it has removed such things from the main boards and so makes the Mods lives easier. If something gets a bit too heated on the main boards then posts are either edited/deleted (not very often), or if the whole thread is OT it gets dumped into the 'basement' (after warnings of course). That lets everyone have their moan amongst like minded moaners.

What goes on in said 'basement' is not much different to what you'll hear in the pub, and subscribed members are prompted repeatedly on entry that they may well be offended by content.

I think on the whole I'm comfortable with the move. I was a little unsure when I first saw the headline, and I grumbled about it earlier to MrsD but now I've read through the whole thread here and Andy's reassurances I'm happy. Good luck with the direction you are taking this, I've been here pretty much from day one and will continue to be here for the foreseeable future.

Rather late into the fray; school governor meetings can drag on.....

I'm delighted for Andy. Without him there would be no RMweb. If Andy feels it's a good move, judging by the way he's created and developed this website, then who can disagree.

Do I have reservations? Of course. I just hope that Warners understand what a gem they have with this website and leave Andy to continue to nuture it in the way he sees fit.

As long as RMweb remains its clear, unbiased, thoughtful, humorous, challenging, provoking, irritating, inspirational, frustrating, informative and enthustiastic self, then I'll stick around.

Best wishes on your next step forward Andy.

Peter

Well done Andy. I am sure that this move will make RMweb far more secure than has been possible in the past.

To those who fear that Warners will change the running of the site and that Andy will be dumped in two weeks time, I think you should have no such worries! If Warners change the place so that we are all unhappy with them and RMweb then they will find they have a rather empty forum! As for them getting rid of Andy, if they do that he would have MRweb up and running in a day I would think, with or without the help of anyother magazine or corporation. That happens and I suspect we would all jump ship with him!

Warners and Andy must both want and need the status quo to remain for the long term good of RMweb and that means we can still enjoy this wonderful site that keeps me up at night when I should have gone to bed far too often!

Given the sheer amount of unpaid hard work that Andy has put into creating and maintaining RMWeb over a fair number of years I'm pleased that he's now going to be rewarded for his creation and this deal should also guarantee RMWeb's continuing existence. While fears about future commercial interference are understandable I've seen no sign of that being a problem in the Loco Revue Forum which, even though it was AFAIK set up by Editions L-R rather than bought by them, often includes very critical postings about products and a similar range of topics as here.

Best of Luck Andy with this new direction.

As a member for just over 2 years I can't see any problem with this change, and if it gives Andy and his family fiscal peace of mind so much the better. Is it just me or do most of the "anti's" seem to be members with very low post counts?

My only complaint is with the Claret and Blue, when everyone knows the best "team" colours are Black and White :locomotive:

Wow, bolt out of the blue stuff.

Firstly congratulations on managing to turn the site into a paying job, and securing the future of it into the bargain. I can understand why some are apprehensive, but it seems to be the way of things now that a lot of well established "community" sites are becoming part of print media operations, for two obvious reasons: firstly, print media companies are beginning to feel the pinch as people buy fewer magazines and turn to electronic media, and secondly, the increasing cost to website organisers of hosting electronic media, the increasing time needed to run and monitor websites as useage increases (and the law begins to catch up with regulating electronic media) together with the traditional attitude of a lot of 'net users that they prefer not to pay for anything or help out with the running of sites. As it happens another website I regularly post in (to do with the Eurovision Song Contest but don't ask...) which began life as a community run site has been acquired by an international publishing house, and frankly nothing has changed in nearly twelve months, it's still as pithy and bitchy as ever, so perhaps I'm a bit more relaxed about RMweb coming under the wing of Warners. I think Warners will be well aware of the fact if they did start to interfere with the ethos and style of the forums, they could loose members pretty sharpish - and that's no good if you are trying to claw back some revenue with advertising.

I actually thought the new look colour scheme was a tribute to long lost Stafford coach operator Greatrex Travel, but that's probably as much to do with my hatred of all things footy-shaped as anything else.

Strggling to put this in words as precise as I want but my fear after MI 1 and 2 came out was that someone would offer Andy a job in publishing but demand in return that he gave up RMweb, this has been avoided and I am just going to trust his judgement for the future of RMweb.

Blimey, what a (now) long and fascinating thread!

I've been dipping in and out all day and each time I came back, it got longer!

I can do no more than add my own heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Andy Y and Warners for ensuring that we can all continue to enjoy this fantastic resource - well done guys! (not forgetting the Mods & all behind the scenes!).

As an occasional visitor to Warners shows and buyer of their mags, I can't really understand what the fuss about 'commercialisation' is/has been about? To me, Warners are pretty dedicated to supporting the hobby of railway modelling - it's in their own long term interest to do so, after all.

Andy Y's dedication both to this site and railways in beyond the shadow of a doubt and I trust that he will continue to grow this site - which will be in his interest to do so!

Therefore, both parties have a vested interest in this site continuing in the manner and with the reputation that it has until now.

Long may it reign!

Cheers and all the best for the future, Andy.

John E.

Have a quick look at this site, http://forums.mg-rover.org/ Just the screen colours I'm talking about, Tab between the 2 sites - see what I mean. Or perhaps a grey background instead of white. just a small point really, what do others think ?

Since you asked I think you need to re-define your idea of 'good' tbh. The site you linked to (colour-wise) is just dire.

Cheers

Same as with any change really.

If you like it - great. If not - try to live with it. If you can, great. If you can't - plenty more forums in the sea. I do though, struggle with people who think that anything run by a (gasp) profit-making company is somehow 'evil' and must be stopped/criticised at all costs (but then again, newspaper snobs annoy me too...)

Andy - well done fella, glad you've made something that started as a hobby within a hobby for you into a career :) - enjoy the plaudits and the tea.

As a relative newcomer on here, I can only say that the tie-up with Warners is just reward for all of Andy's hard work and development of this site into what it is today. I know that when the site was down in December, just how much many of us missed it. If the deal with Warners secures its long-term future then that is something we should welcome.
