I went into my local Newsagents today and spotted this deal, a Mk 1 coach and rubbish for the bin for just £3.99 so I thought that has to be worth buying. :O

In fact I thought it was such a good deal that I bought 5 :locomotive: :locomotive: :locomotive: :locomotive: :locomotive:

5 X Mk 1's for less than £20, now that's a bargain. :locomotive: :locomotive:

The coaches are un-numbered but that is no problem to do and other than that once weathered and in a rake on the new layout they will be fine, I already have Brake Ends and Full Brakes so I can make at least one 7 coach train.

Yes, Andy. There's a long thread in MMM about this - and some of the people on there have bought more than 5!

I gather the coaches are old Airfix-equivalent stock, but if you're going to weather them, and they look like coaches, so-what?

I've just made up another 80 DAS strips - only took an hour (I'm speeding up) - so more walling can be done when they dry.

Jason - great point....a WCML diversion. And I have seen photos of Duchesses hauling expresses on the S&C. "City of Carlisle" near Hellifield (ok, almost the S&C) in September 63 rings a bell!

Hellifield means that it either came via the S&Cor Little North Western (Ingleton) and would then take the Blackburn line to regain the WCML. If the engineering works were north of Tebay then it would have had to be the S&C so you can justify Duchesses, Princesses, etc., at least for earlier periods. For the very late 60's, Class 50's are also on the list.

Had a chat with Tim about those Mk 1's; his opinion is that they are irredeemably crap :)

He is a bit of a perfectionist though......

I have no need for mk1's myself as I imagine they were extremely rare at Bacup

Cheers for that Jason, as it will probably be the only passenger train other than the Local none corridor and the DMU I am not to worried, a Mk 1 is a Mk 1 and as I say numbered and weathered it will be fine, I expect Tim says they are crap because the seats are the wrong colour as well but again if I was that fussy I could always paint them one day when I fill them with about 200 seated passengers, (there another job for you to add to your list Jeff).

90% or more of my running will be freight and mucky at that, I just love dirty engines that have worked there heart and soul out for the Company.

Bodgit. :sungum:

P.S. or I could sell them on and get a fiver each next year.

Good point, if you take into account that the S&C is a diversionary route for the WCML then you can justify quite a few more classes of loco if you imagine that engineering works on the premier line are over-running.

Or would they have use the Ingleton line back then for diversions?

The Low Gill - Ingleton etc line was still there and fully connected at both ends in 1963 although I think its only regular use was by a freight trip from Skipton/Hellifield by that time.

Don't scare me, Andy!!

If we sat and thought about all the jobs we'd have to do in building a layout - thousands, I guess - we'd never start, would we? Maybe we'd still be running super-detail locos round an oval of track!!

I have a 1st Edition Hornby Dublo 2-rail track plan book with 16 layouts in it if you fancy it. Excellent plans with all the wiring diagrams and some of them will handle THREE locos!

I am surprised that Andy hasn't become addicted to Train Simulator software in this difficult period. It must be similar to a junky going cold turkey : D

I wouldn't disagree with you there. I bet he'll have something to say about that!

Maybe we should train him to build stone walls or scratchbuild a town full of terraces. Those will keep him busy and, most likely, send him into the realms of insanity that both you and I clearly inhabit!!

More than me.  HAHA.My two are to convert to WCRC ECS for GWRd, 2011.  Though not sure which of the locos will be running them in and out yet.  Got the WCRC transfers ready...

....then they'll be off to Carnforth for their next trip on the Fellsman and S&C?

Oh, what a great thing is the imagination twaddle....

Jeff et al

On subject of local trains DMUs were around in 1966/67 by look of reference material I have.  The local Bradford Carlisle stoppers seemed to have a wide range of steam haulage right up to 1966, in MIchael Welch book Settle and Carlisle Steam Finale (full colour highly recommended - Runpast Publishing ) there are pictures of Britannia 70035 on three stanier coaches in 1964, 70006 with three mark ones in 1966, Clan 72006 in 1965 and my favourite Royal Scot 46152 with three coaches, a bogie parcels van, four vans and a DMU being towed north in 1965.

Something there for everyone.

And I've found in same volume 3f number 43295 heading a freight south in 1957, and a superb picture of a very grubby WD 90243 heading some Covhops north at Dent in 1966.

Few locals from Bradford to Garsdale headed by 2-6-4 Stanier and Fairburn Tanks  and a Carlisle to Appleby with a Fowler 2-6-4.  Its well worth tracking down this book if you can.

I agree about that book, Simon. It was the book I referred to earlier today to find the Duchess "City of Carlisle" at Hellifield.

Lots of excellent colour photos and that rare pic, as you said, of the 3F.

Michael Welch is the author if anyone wishes to track down a copy.

Jeff

ps. my 3F should be here tomorrow...

Glad you're still waiting. Nothing dramatic happening - I've built another 2 feet or so of walling and will build another section tomorrow morning when my latest DAS strips have dried out.

I'll take a couple of pics and post them on here for you!

When the cross wall is done I need to plan out and TRY to build this run-down barn structure. Should be fun as I've never scribed DAS before.

I was down the club tonight so asked some locals what worked the locals on the S&C in the early 60's. Basically, Ivatt Mickey Mouse Moguls (2-6-0's), Stanier and Fairburn 2-6-4T's and possibly Ivatt 2-6-2T's, shedded at Skipton. I asked about Standard tanks and they didn't think so.

Evening Jason, the Fairburn and Stanier 2-6-4T's are lovely, I have one of each plus the BR Std 4MT, they run so well and look so good even with just a couple of Maroon coaches up behind or even running bunker first. Well recomended again Jeff and the Micky Mouse will be out later in the year, looks like you will need some deep pockets. :O

The Low Gill - Ingleton etc line was still there and fully connected at both ends in 1963 although I think its only regular use was by a freight trip from Skipton/Hellifield by that time.

The Ingleton line was maintained to main line standards for diversions up till it's closure. We very rarely saw diversions until after it closed. Then it was class 50's hauling them on a weekend certainly in 68 I was pased by several diversions with 50's on while waqiting for the 15 guinea special.I only saw duchesses twice and they were both on specials, City of Liverpool was one.

One thing you do need for that era is a pair of Claytons's they were all delivered via the S & C and always ran in pairs heading north. WD 2-8-0's were very very rare but were used in pairs on the rail trains when the line was relayed in 63/64 time Usually with 20 bogies full of track panels heading north followed by another pair with 20 empty bogies. Coming south in the evening the order was reveresed with all the old panels on the train of empties and the other train now empty. I lived opposite Settle and could see 2 miles of the line from our house.

You could also include the Crewe test train of 19 maroon coaches that used to be hauled north by a class 50 when the furst few were being tested. It caused quite a problem one morning when the 50 got commandeered to assist a failed peak and a small BR standard spent the day shuffling the train backwards and forwards through the crossover at Settle as it was too long for the sidings.

Re the £3.99 coaches, lovely, reminds me of the lovely Kitmaster versions.    Flush glazing, proportions all looked ok to me.

And Jeff the 3F is a lovely model, I have a weathered version, but also am likely to buy weathered Ivatt flying pig, which I suspect would look ok with two Staniers or a Mk1 and a van , another Black 5, and more importantly, another two Bulleids, but these of course would never deal with the harsh realites of S&C life... being all late BR.  On second thoughts, I ought to be more specialised. I'll forget the Ivatt for the meantime.
