Things which annoy you with modelling

Recommended Posts

Hornby Track Mats,

The layout on them just doesn't seem to open itself up to ease or enjoyment of operating, more back a train out, run it round for a bit and put it back in.

yes, I have set a few up and quickly assembled something else.

Given the nature of the beasts - a small oval, its very hard to do much else. Perhaps its time they produced one for a BLT and fiddle yard?

I was refering to the twin oval set up which tends to give two running loops each with a siding, making it difficult to swapping trains over.

I'd sooner see the approach peco has in their track set of including a plan book

A recent one is when I go to modelling expos I usually get shady looks due to my age/clothing choice.

No, I won't stab you and steal your money (would be far too interested in taking the trains)

Right with you there. im in my early 30s usually have a rugby shirt & base ball cap on. What do you model. O gauge. What have you got. This that the other. Then the look like Im talking utter sh@t, Usually then having to prove it with pictures. Then the really suprised look and a good conversation.

Dont judge a book by its cover !!!

How can anything be annoying about modelling ??

Rants (I admit, I'm guilty),..re. rtr model discrepances,.. solid paint brushes,... blocked aerosol nozzles,...unfortunate paint finishes,...doubtful references / plans...differing opinions,...etc.

It's all part of the fun,...Is it not ?

As with anything you're involved with,... You've gotta play the cards you're dealt with.

I got another one - stupid blummin fly's buzzing around my room all the time! Where do they all come from!?

They come from Down Under as we send them north during our winter. Unfortunately they'll be back in Australia for our summer...

Cheers, Gary.

Ebayers who slide a P4 or EM guage wagon amongst the advertised OO guage stock I have just purchased...

Ebayers who claim their model is 'rare' or 'in demand', when infact they are as common as sh#t..

Varying delivery times from the UK from different stockists/retailers..

...and the missus yelling out "dinner is ready", just as you have - poured plaster, glued something, filled the air brush paint pot, filled the static applicator with grass after painting the scenery with glue...

A few annoying things as a diesel/electric modeller:

1) Etched plates that are smaller than the printed ones on RTR models. Assuming the etched ones are the right size, why can't RTR manufacturers print to the right size - they manage much smaller lettering elsewhere on models!

2) Orange cantrail painting - bow pen beats me everytime and transfers take ages to get straight without breaking.

3) Buffer beam pipes that don't quite fit the manufacturer pre-drilled holes and then fit loose when I drill them out with the next size up - never knew 0.05mm could make such a difference.

I put something down and expect it to be there next time I need it. No matter how hard I stare at the spot willing it to appear I dont see it if it is left or right of where I expect it to be. Then when I do see it, I explode with the irrational "Who moved it....?"

My grandad had a hook for every tool and I followed his tidyness so its not an old age thing. It's just sheer cussedness.

I am new to building but I have had to learn as I go along, I have had a few VERY frustrating moments I can tell you and my wife has told me off about the language :) but for all my trials all I have to do is ASK one of the professionals on here and I have a solution within minuets I'm only on my second model btw, a problem shared is a problem halved but what a learning curve, I love it.

Regards

Grasshopper John.

My Comet pannier tank chassis ground to a halt some time ago (read years!). I intended to build it compensated for EM gauge.......

Nicely presented at an agreeable height with effective lighting, curtains, and probably the most important point of all, something that works...!!

Agreeable height is a debateable subject. My layout is sometimes said to be low, most often by the older generation, I like it low as I can reach over the backscene to uncouple stuff and the younger generation (whom we are trying to encourage a furture interest in the hobby) can see whats going on without their parents rushing them on because their arms are aching carrying them all the time so that they can see the trains.

'Lorraine', 'Lose Women', 'Coronation Street', to name but a few...............All ITV women have nasal screaming tyre voices.....

Ah, thats better...

I am torn between saying - Only 5%? - and - Which 5%?

Personal mileage may vary on this one dependent on the company one keeps, the frequency of exposure to others and the nature of events attended. ;)

As to which 5% I couldn't possibly say. However if you're in a room with 19 other modellers and you can't see anyone who's a bit of a door-handle/pseudo-expert/poor personal hygiene the news might not be good. ;)

I get that at times due to me being a member of the cropped hair and boots and braces brigade(it started at a young age and some habits are hard to break lol)

Over-complicated kits. I mean ones where the final result could have been equalled with fewer fiddly bits of plastic. The Ratio Provender Store seems to have been designed by someone whose other passion was jigsaws - the more pieces the better. As it's not cheap this is silly. We buy such kits to save time in layout construction - not for the fun of assembly. I think Bachmann launched an RTP version for not very much more money, but this seems to be largely sold out. I wonder why?

Ian,

The same thing applies to the GWR Station Canopy kits - I took one look and pushed it to one side :)
