Kit building wagons can be addictive Al!

Airbrush finish is the way to go, I usually wait until there are about 4 or more and do them all at once. Some times they can sit for months until the lettering is tackled (need to be in the right frame of mind with steady hands).

If that's your first attempt, your doing very well BTW.

Hi Al,

Really excellent work and looking at the packs of Signals I nearly turned off, haha.

Good work on the Mineral Wagon kit as well, they make a nice Wagon, I used to take the O Gauge ones on Holiday as they were a nice evenings build.

When you come to do the Sole Bar, I tend to use Railmatch Acrylics from a Brush and then add Powder whilst wet as I did in this demonstration for Railway Modeller a couple of years ago. Although for a 16T Mineral yes it would be Blacker as Jason says, than on this picture, but I needed it that bright for the camera to pick it up and show the detail on the Limpet .

Also as Jason says, weather lasts, you will find it easier, if not quite prototypical.

I'd agree with Sasquatch, Al.  When salt/hairspray weathering an airbrush is the only way to go.  I use a cheap Humbrol spray gun and cans of compressed air from Halfords.  However I would use Andrew P and Jason's techniques over the top of this if I was building a steel wagon.

It's been a while since I posted, I know. Just too much else going on to do much modelling, I'm afraid.

But anyway, here's a few photos of what I managed to get done over the weekend.

I've been watching the video "Derbyshire Main Line", which is all footage of traffic on the line through Bakewell. It's amazing how varied the traffic was, from 3Fs to 9Fs, Jubilees, Royal Scots, and all sorts of tank engines, and then DMUs, Class 25s, Peaks and the Blue Pullman. There was a Derby Lightweight DMU on the Derby to Millers-Dale run in the late 50s, and by happy coincidence, there was one going cheap on Ebay, so I just had to get it.

Having bought it, I thought I'd better give it a driver, and some passengers. I've had some Dapol figures for some time, which you've seen a couple of earlier, but I also bought some unpainted Prieser H0 figures a while ago.

Here's the driver: originally a Dapol Guard, but I've cruelly amputated his arm and repositioned it:

post-17302-0-54924600-1436216054_thumb.jpg

Worse was to come, however, as I then chopped his legs off:

post-17302-0-25207400-1436216101_thumb.jpg

and tried him out in the cab:

post-17302-0-74069200-1436216160_thumb.jpg

These are the Prieser figures as they come:

post-17302-0-98305100-1436216200_thumb.jpg

and then here's how the painting progressed:

post-17302-0-55274200-1436216300_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-43712100-1436216323_thumb.jpg

and here they are done:

post-17302-0-13283700-1436216403_thumb.jpg

I painted the seats and interior of the DMU, so it looked a bit better than the Bachmann plastic, and added the passengers:

post-17302-0-82468100-1436216487_thumb.jpg

Then I put it all back together:

post-17302-0-68242200-1436216629_thumb.jpg

I also had a go at an Airfix bicycle which I found. I replaced the handlebars, and changed the pedals so they were diagonal:

post-17302-0-73163100-1436216725_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-33001600-1436216749_thumb.jpg

Very hard to photograph, right at the limits of what the camera will focus on.

Hopefully I'll have a play with the DMU on the layout, and get some photos. I might even try some video!

Thanks for looking,

Al.

Hello Al  Nice to see a post from you again, its amazing the difference a driver and a few passengers make ? one of Bodgits pet hates is to see a smashing layout perfect in every way, but ruined by having NO footplate crews in any of the locos, it really does make a big difference....

Hi George, thanks very much, it's nice to get a bit of modelling time. Yes. I've got quite a few loco crew to go at, must get them painted.

Hi Al, lovely bit of painting, Is that a new kind of anti theft device that you are using to stop cycle theft, it certainly works. All the best Adrian.

Hi mate, thank you. I've got a cunning plan - I've nicked all the spokes from the bike wheels! Let's see someone ride that away! :O

Nice work in the figures and bike Al ,it's nice to see plenty of passengers using the line :)

Thanks Brian.

Looks lovely.  It's a labour of love painting figures which will be hidden away inside the carriages - I just went for a remarkably cheap set of ready to plonk ones from the internet!

You remind me, now the Summer holiday is upon us and I am (supposedly) working shorter hours I need to get on with my DMU project!

The DMU is secondhand, and came without the detail packs. Photographs of real Derby Lightweights show that the front buffer beam is very full of vacuum pipes, air pipes and wires, whereas the model looks a bit bare at the moment.

I don't know whether there is a third-party detail pack available, or whether to have a go at scratchbuilding it all.

Hi Al,

Check this blog - it's a Cravens DMU but the buffer beam detail will be a similar task. I have to say I like the look of the magnteic hose connectors !

As mine is a 117 it was a fairly easy job to obtain the full Craftsman detailing kit.  Of course that then leads to the possibility of doing the DMBS to DMS conversion but at this point i'm not going there...

Yes, Al, I can just see my Gran catching the Derby slow to Manchester Central at Bakewell (she lived in Middleton by Youlgreave)on her way see her daughter and family in Chester in 1964. My Dad's Mini will be in the car park.

Does it have red tail lamps that come on in the lamp units? If it does you need to kill them off somehow, as they are a modern thing and railcars didn't have them until much, much later...

Looking nice mind.

Hi Andy, on the model, the centre light is red, and the two outside ones are white. However, they are all far too bright, so I will be doing something about that.

I've seen a couple of photos where the tail light is a normal loco lamp on the centre lamp-bracket, so I might do that, however that would mean having to turn the model round depending on whether it's on the Up or Down line.

Mind you, thinking about it - I need to do that anyway 'cos of the driver...

This weekend, I've managed to get a bit of modelling done.

Firstly, I painted up some more Dapol figures as loco crew for various locomotives which have not yet been manned.

post-17302-0-07014000-1436723516_thumb.jpg

Then, I turned my attention back to the Parkside kits.

I've finally got hold of some aerosol Humbrol 64 which is near enough the right colour for the mineral wagons.

The first thing I did was overspray the first wagon i built, which you've seen earlier in the thread. My attempts at weathering were not particularly successful, so I took it back to base colour.

post-17302-0-65566900-1436723734_thumb.jpg

Then I concentrated on building up the other four which I'd bought.

I built up the bodies and chassis separately, so that I could easily spray the bodies without having to mask up the running gear:

post-17302-0-30337000-1436723741_thumb.jpg

I followed Jason T's suggestion of using MEK to get the bearings to fit in the W irons, and it worked well:

post-17302-0-40286900-1436723743_thumb.jpg

Here's the production line:

post-17302-0-50109100-1436723745_thumb.jpg

and here's three of the five wagons basically complete:

post-17302-0-39164200-1436723747_thumb.jpg

And another one:

post-17302-0-29202600-1436723749_thumb.jpg

I originally thought about putting 3-link couplings on these, but eventually went for the tried and tested hook and loop:

post-17302-0-29428700-1436723751_thumb.jpg

Then I did all the transfers:

post-17302-0-61516700-1436723753_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-07572400-1436724179_thumb.jpg

Here's that first truck again, now with the transfers applied:

post-17302-0-62225000-1436724181_thumb.jpg

And here's some weathering applied. I dry brushed some Humbrol Matt Rust (No.113) and some Humbrol Dirty Black (No.RC401):

post-17302-0-75504200-1436724184_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-47037700-1436724187_thumb.jpg

For this one, I tried a different approach, I mixed up a dilute wash of Humbrol Brown (No.186) and the Dirty Black, and then applied it all over from the top, allowing it to run and settle where it wanted:

post-17302-0-97275800-1436724189_thumb.jpg

So here they all are on the layout, along with a repainted Hornby version:

post-17302-0-81057800-1436724198_thumb.jpg

That's all for now, thanks for looking.

Hi Al, like Jock and Adrian, I forward my congratulations on you superb 3000 post and with some wonderful instructional pics and descriptions along the way, I'm thinking of the Foot Bridge and Station Building interior in particular, well done mate.

All the best and looking forward to the next 3000 coming in shortly.

Those loco crews are truly Stakhanovite, straight off the kind of USSR propaganda posters I collected on a visit to Russia in the late '80s!

Also like the wagons.  I must remember to pop to Halfords on the way home to get some primer & various paints for my next projects.  I am also feeling very foolish.  I have been attaching couplings to my Parkside Dundas kits with complicated arrangements of plasticard and thought what I now see are the mounts were some kind of scrap used to hold the sprues & runners in the mould...

Congratulations Al on passing the 3000 posts mark - evidence, if needed, of the popularity of your thread. Thanks for more inspiration on the 16Ts,

Kind regards,

Jock.

Hi Jock, thanks very much.

Hi Al, congratulations on 3,000 posts,  great job on the wagons, and as usual you have gone the extra mile by weathering the keyboard a nice touch. All the best Adrian.

Cheers Adrian. I'm a bit embarrassed by the keyboard, now...
