Build a wall? :D

Like he says.......

How am i supposed to work up any kind of suspense, if you two are going to keep guessing the right answer all the time?? :nono:  :D

Yes, a wall, of course.

Here's the start of it:

post-17302-0-00707900-1437081722_thumb.jpg

I took a strip of 80thou styrene, and cruelly bent it:

post-17302-0-06032300-1437081724_thumb.jpg

the basic bits:

post-17302-0-43253200-1437081726_thumb.jpg

And now, here it is almost complete - 'cos I forgot to photograph the in between bits. :scratchhead:

post-17302-0-57755900-1437081728_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-62925200-1437081730_thumb.jpg

So, as usual, it got a coat of Matt Sand:

post-17302-0-40898100-1437081733_thumb.jpg

followed by a couple of washes of Black Green, and there you are:

post-17302-0-88783300-1437081735_thumb.jpg

Bob's your Aunty's Husband...

Here it is on the layout;

That's all for now, it's been a busy evening!

So, I said to the foreman, "are your lads okay with building this bridge then?"

He said "Oh arr, sor, it's nae problem at all, dinna ye worrit".

So I left them to it.

I wish I'd taken more notice...

post-17302-0-89280300-1437175811_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-03832300-1437175817_thumb.jpg

Right!

Enough silliness. I've removed the bridge so I can sort out the far bit of the down platform - which doesn't exist yet:

post-17302-0-49883900-1437175819_thumb.jpg

So here's a lump of 80thou plasticard cut to shape:

post-17302-0-76972500-1437175821_thumb.jpg

Hmmm, something missing?

post-17302-0-78924200-1437175823_thumb.jpg

Oh, no, here it is:

post-17302-0-12281600-1437175826_thumb.jpg

I took the piece of plasticard, and added various other bits I'd cut out:

post-17302-0-22279700-1437175828_thumb.jpg

and started sticking them together:

post-17302-0-70863500-1437175830_thumb.jpg

That's a good bit of lead there, it's very good for holding things still.

Here's the platform taking shape now:

post-17302-0-82271500-1437175834_thumb.jpg

And now sprayed Grey, and with the edging flags applied:

post-17302-0-60278900-1437176157_thumb.jpg

Which are then painted:

post-17302-0-71025600-1437176159_thumb.jpg

And here it is back on the layout:

post-17302-0-11570700-1437176162_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-72277300-1437176164_thumb.jpg

That's all for now, thanks for looking,

Al.

The bridge is now back in place, as is the footbridge.

You just have to ignore the luggage trolley fouling the down line, and the cable clip on the up platform, and this is a great photo...

post-17302-0-32107600-1437180725_thumb.jpg

The embankment and wall are back in place, and some more shrubbery has appeared:

post-17302-0-29211200-1437180730_thumb.jpg

Here's the view from the up platform:

post-17302-0-04006500-1437180733_thumb.jpg

and from the car park:

post-17302-0-07108700-1437180735_thumb.jpg

A view through the main entrance through the booking hall, and out to the down platform:

post-17302-0-99679300-1437180736_thumb.jpg

and a couple of shots of the main station building, from the car park:

post-17302-0-04342400-1437180741_thumb.jpg

I've told old Mr Lomas about leaving his truck in front of the entrance, he really should know better...

Thanks for looking,

Super stuff Al. You know it's against the law not to have a bus on that overbridge dontcha?!

C6T.

Cheers mate,

I'm sorry, but there isn't a bus route on that road, but a tractor and trailer might be seen. Do you think that will satisfy the law?

It would be an improvement on the last bus I rode on...

Working my way along, as it were, now I've got the bridge and embankment sorted, I've moved on to the new bit of platform beyond the bridge.

You saw the basic structure yesterday, like this:

post-17302-0-01437500-1437259635_thumb.jpg

So now, we start on detailing it.

First, I added the back retaining wall behind the platform:

post-17302-0-99499600-1437259708_thumb.jpg

And you will see that I also added some miscellaneous undergrowth along the bottom of the wall.

I also added the final piece of the supporting wall for the platform end, the rest is already on the layout attached to the previous section.

post-17302-0-17008200-1437259711_thumb.jpg

The retaining wall needs capping stones adding, so I cut some square styrene tube into L shaped pieces, and stuck them to the back to provide a support for the coping stones, then I laid a strip of 10thou styrene sheet to stick them to:

post-17302-0-09485900-1437259713_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-48986400-1437259716_thumb.jpg

Then I cut loads of coping stones out of 20thou plasticard:

post-17302-0-76117700-1437259718_thumb.jpg

and stuck them along the length of the wall:

post-17302-0-93035500-1437259720_thumb.jpg

I put a proper end on the wall to give it an appearance of some thickness. This will be filed round on the corner once set properly:

post-17302-0-17203600-1437259723_thumb.jpg

Once that was all done, I gave all the new bits a coat of Matt Sand;

post-17302-0-62785100-1437259725_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-79326200-1437259727_thumb.jpg

and once that had dried, a couple of washes of Black Green, to end up with my normal finish:

post-17302-0-04739900-1437259730_thumb.jpg

More to come soon,

Al.

In the previous post, I'd added the retaining wall at the back of the end of the down platform.

If it's a retaining wall, we'd better give it something to retain, hadn't we?

I took some chunks of polystyrene packaging, and cut them roughly to shape:

post-17302-0-34530600-1437260653_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-82831500-1437260655_thumb.jpg

The reason I'm using polystyrene as the base of this bank, is that it will be mostly covered in trees and bushes, so I need something I can anchor the trees in.

Once happy with the fit of the polystyrene bits, I covered them in a good dose of PVA glue, and started laying newspaper strips over them. This will hopefully bind the bits together, and provides a cohesive surface for further work.

post-17302-0-81082000-1437260657_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-50416100-1437260660_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-57084400-1437260662_thumb.jpg

That's all looking good, so I covered it all in a good thick coat of Burnt Umber artists acrylic. You will have seen that I've used this a lot for scenery - especially as a base for static grass. This is because it dries to the colour of mud / soil, with a matt finish, and therefore looks right underneath the static grass, and is nice and sticky for the grass to attach to:

post-17302-0-94903900-1437260664_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-62528800-1437260667_thumb.jpg

So here's the static grass. I used two different lengths - 1mm and 2mm - and two subtly different colours mixed together to get this finish:

post-17302-0-98680500-1437260669_thumb.jpg

post-17302-0-84620800-1437260672_thumb.jpg

Having shaken off the excess, and let it dry a bit, I gave it all a blast of hairspray, and added my mixture of flock, to make it look less like a well cared for lawn, and more like the undergrowth under trees.

post-17302-0-94226800-1437261297_thumb.jpg

And, speaking of trees, here's the first of many started, allowing the trunk to dry before I do any more to it:

Excellent Al, l love the step by step pictures really good ..very interesting to see how you tackle things...

Fantastic work Al, that little break has done you the power of good, and you back to the Old Inventive Al again, brilliant Mate.

Thanks Gents,

You are both a big inspiration to me, George with the detail and scratchbuilding, and Andy with your scenery and sheer output! :)

I'm really enjoying doing some proper modelling again, which is something I've not felt for a while. I think we all have times when the mojo disappears, but you have encouraged me all the way.

Fantastic work again Al. I'm just hoping when I do my bridges on PDW I can that same realistic look on the stone work as you have with your's. The matt sand I take it is a Humbrol Acrylic?

Cheers

Hi mate, yes that's right, I always use the Humbrol Acrylics.

Just had a quick look through some photos, and it looks like the Matt Sand (No.63) with Black Green (No.91) washed over will be a good match for the bridges and the station building on PDW.

I'm going to have to spend some time tree-making now, which isn't very photogenic - well the process isn't, the end result should be.

So I thought I'd put the new section of Down platform, and it's banking, back on the layout to see if it all fits so far, and see what  it looks like.

So here it is in place:

post-17302-0-31371900-1437327394_thumb.jpg

And here's everything back together:

post-17302-0-81712600-1437327396_thumb.jpg

A photo looking through the bridge at the platform:

post-17302-0-04876400-1437327399_thumb.jpg

And one looking the other way. You can see I have more work to do on the back of the bridge, but the platform joins up nicely:

post-17302-0-60509700-1437327401_thumb.jpg

And this one 'cos I think it's a great view of the station building:

post-17302-0-80459900-1437327403_thumb.jpg

That's all for now, thanks for looking,

Hi Al

Have been catching up on your progress after a couple of busy weeks. Loved the painted figures, wagons and particularly the new retaining wall behind the platform. Those last photographs under the bridge are fantastic! Keep it coming.

Cheers John

Agreed! This (last) photo works because of the lighting. Be interested to know how you did that - it almost looks like natural daylight but you're in a cellar aren't you?
