Unusual diesel workings

Recommended Posts

Wow. I don't think I have ever seen a Peak hauling Mk3s on a service train.

Or maybe I just am not in the right place at the right time?

Don't think it was ever common. But I did see a 45/1 on a full rake of Mk3s in Inter-City livery at Dawlish in 1988, two weeks before the last Peaks were switched off. I think it was substituting for a booked pair of 31/4s. Can't remember the exact working, except it was a Summer Saturday to Paignton.

Since they were officially banned west of Bristol by that point, it was almost certainly the last Peak on a service train in Devon.

I thought I would reserect this, as I have always been really interested in rare workings.

(I have never counted rail tours as a rare working)

I came across 20001 and 20016 at Reading during may 1985

I have also just found this

Running through a few in my head...

Someone posted up a pic of 40001 at Eastleigh on here recently.

Also those 45s that worked to Brighton briefly were very unusual

50020 worked out of Kings Cross in 1978

I saw a Scot rail 47 at Bristol once

A few pics were posted up of the odd 40 at Bristol

The 2 73s to Birmingham are on here

A 33/1 got to Newcastle in '83-ish with a couple of Gatwick Express sets, on the pre-service tour

Re: the ScotRail 47 at Bristol, I believe they ran in that livery, with original names, for some time after they moved south. I've seen some footage on YouTube where they looked decidedly manky, I think they were just put straight into service despite being pretty much knackered from their push-pull service.

Edit: Beaten to it with 33113!

Don't know where might be rare for a 25 - ubiquitous comes to mind!

Phil

25191 made it to Littlehampton with 33011 with a railtour back in July 1986.

Were they ever common anywhere on the Southern Region?

Class 24s were to be found in the early 60s. But that is about it.

I wonder if anyone ever saw a BR blue 25 on the southern?

Another has sprung to mind. Class 31 at Stewarts lane after Royal train duties.

Whats the furthest south a 26 or 27 got on a regular working?

Back in1967 or 1968, I saw D7667 at Clapham Junction- one of the few to be delivered in BR Blue.

Heading onto the SR at Acton Wells

As for 26 and 27, certainly Carlisle.

Class 31s were common on the SR in the 70s on Bristol - Portsmouth workings.

Thanks for the picture of the 25.

Out of interest when did the switch take place from 31s to 33s on that service... 79ish?

Another ...to answer my own question. Some one posted up a picture of a class 26 at Frodingham. I will try and find the picture now.

Here it is

There was a regular diagram for a Class 26 to bring the Cumbrian Coast mail to Preston in the late 80s/early 90s.

In the days of extras for Four Nations (as it was then) rugby specials. The Scotland-Wales fixture always turned up some unusual stuff. I remember a pair of 26's travelling via the S&C as the WCML was closed for maintenance, as far as Preston on a Sunday with the returning Welsh support. They returned north light engine.

Cheers,

Mick

The class 33s took over the Cardiff - Portsmouth workings from the May 1980 timetable change,

having handed over the Waterloo - Exeter workings to class 50 haulage at the same time,

cheers

Would have worked across from Willesden onto the SR to Norwood?

Don't know how often though.

Dave

There's plenty of photos of them passing through Kensington Olympia in the late 1960/ early 1970s. In fact I think Kenny O might be able to claim that every diesel class has passed through at some point. Not seen a photo of a 26s but one must have got across from the ER before they went north...

Here's a nice photo account of a class 40 trip to Hither Green from Stratford.

Others got there before me but I seem to remember seeing a 25 most  times I went to Clapham Junction on freight ....which would suggest a daily basis

Further south - perhaps the Coast east of Brighton - would probably qualify as rare

One that immediately springs to mind is from my first ever All-Line Railrover in 1986. I'd had a nice complicated overnight move on the Friday/Saturday to end up at Sheffield (26/07) to get the gronk shunting the stock from the 05:58 Bradford - Poole onto the rear of the 06:52 Leeds - Poole. I then did train behind 45111 to Birmingham New St.

I then did 31464 & 31432 on the 08:40 Liverpool - Paignton which failed in the tunnel before Five Ways. So we set back into New Street and Saltley very kindly provided 58025 which we took quite happily to Bristol. Of course the Bristol lads weren't happy as it got taken off there for 50041.

Halcyon days indeed :locomotive:

Class 33 regular at Birmingham New Street on the incoming FO Weymouth - Leeds during early/mid 80's 16:30 ish ex New Street IIRC.

Portsmouth Harbour to Leeds, 27th April 1984. Note the obligatory 'Windmiller' in the first coach. Engine worked as far as Birmingham New St, where it changed for anything Saltley wanted to lose for a few days.

How about this one

25s on the GWML on freight were not unusual (but not everyday occurances either), but on passenger were much rarer, even on specials such as this, and even then they would mainly be double headed so Type 4 timings could be maintained
